The attack is arguably the most productive and important position in football and this explains why most of the individuals who have won individual honours in the game have played in that position.

Around the world, there are so many top-class forwards who continue to score the goals to help their teams win numerous trophies and keep them relevant.

Every year a new striker comes up, some of them end of becoming one-season wonders while others stay for long at the top of the game.

In this article, we discuss the top forwards of the new year, some of them have been doing this for years while others only started making a name for themselves recently, regardless, they have been the standout attackers of the new year.

  1. 10. Timo Werner, RB Leipzig, Bundesliga

Timo Werner is on the verge of joining forces with Liverpool if the reports flying around are to be believed and that is just a testament to how impressive he has been this season.

The German has scored 28 goals in 40 competitive matches this season and this includes 21 in 25 Bundesliga games and four in the Champions League as he helped unfancied RB Leipzig knock Tottenham out of the competition. His average rating on Whoscored is 7.47.

  1. 9. Sadio Mane, Liverpool, Premier League

Mane has developed into one of the most important attackers in world football and he came very close to winning the Ballon d’Or the last time.

He has continued to score key goals for Liverpool this season and his goals were one reason that Liverpool went on a solid winning run.

He has 14 Premier League goals from 24 games this season and has scored 16 games in all competitions. His average rating on Whoscored is 7.45.

  1. 8. Mohamed Salah, Liverpool, Premier League

The other member of Liverpool’s devastating front three is Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has become a victim of his success after he plundered 32 league goals in his first season back in England.

He has won the last two Golden Boot in the Premier League and he is within touching distance of another one as I write this.

The Egyptian has scored 16 league goals from 26 league starts this season and has 20 goals in all competitions for the Reds this season. His average rating on Whoscored is 7.40.

  1. 7. Braut Erling Haaland, Borussia Dortmund, Bundesliga

Haaland is the biggest youngster that we have watched this season, and the Norwegian is a goal machine that simply cannot stop scoring.

When the Bundesliga resumed at the weekend, he marked it with yet another goal for Borussia Dortmund.

He has scored 50 goals in all competitions for two teams in just 37 matches this season. He has scored at least a goal in every single competition he has played in this season and he is firmly the future of the game. His average rating on Whoscored is 7.65.

  1. 6. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City, Premier League

Sergio Aguero is not as celebrated as he ought to be for his contribution to English football.

The Argentinean became the highest-scoring foreigner in the league this season and despite the quality in the Manchester City team he still remains the go-to man for the goals when they need one.

He has 16 league goals from 17 starts this season and he has scored 24 goals in 32 games in all competitions for the Cityzens. His average rating on Whoscored is 7.19.

  1. 5. Ciro Immobile, SS Lazio, Serie A

Immobile is the most in-form Italian striker in the world at the moment and despite the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, he is the top scorer in the Italian Serie A.

He has scored 27 goals in 25 starts in the Serie A and has 30 goals from 32 games in all competitions.

He is responsible for Lazio’s fine form as they compete to win the Italian league as well as to return to the Champions League. Having also won 8 Man of the Match awards this season, his average rating on Whoscored is 7.55.

  1. 4. Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus, Serie A

Cristiano Ronaldo remains one of the best strikers in the world despite having already clocked 35 years of age.

The former Manchester United man has been in fine form for Juventus as he looks to lead them to another league title.

He has played just 22 league games this season, yet he has scored 21 goals in that competition and he has 25 goals from 33 games in all competitions. His average rating on Whoscored is 7.72.

  1. 3. Kylian Mbappe, PSG, Ligue 1

Arsene Wenger recently said that Kylian Mbappe is the future of football and considering his age, I couldn’t agree more with the former Arsenal boss.

Mbappe is like a force that has stormed through football and the young Frenchman doesn’t look like he would stop soon.

This season has been yet another outstanding one for him as he helped PSG to keep their French Ligue 1 crown by scoring 18 goals in 17 league starts.

Overall, he has scored 30 goals in 34 games in all competitions this season, including 5 in 4 Champions League starts. His average rating on Whoscored is 8.00.

  1. 2. Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich, Bundesliga

Lewandoski is arguably the best striker the Bundesliga has produced in ages and the one reason that he hasn’t exactly been considered to win the Ballon d’Or is because of the dominance of Ronaldo and Messi as well as his failure to lead Bayern Munich to another Champions League crown.

The Pole has continued his fine form this season as he has scored 41 goals from 34 games in all competitions, 26 goals have come from 24 league games and 11 from 6 Champions League games.

His average rating on Whoscored is 8.33

  1. 1. Lionel Messi, Barcelona, La Liga

Lionel Messi still won the last Ballon d’Or despite the Argentine’s career looking like it is declining due to his age.

He remains arguable the most natural talent to ever grace this game, and Barcelona would suffer for it when he eventually leaves the Nou Camp.

He has continued to score the goals for Barcelona this season and has 19 goals, 12 assists and 13 Man of the Match awards from 21 league starts this season.

He has scored 28 goals in 35 games in all competitions for the Catalans and his average rating on Whoscored is 8.59.

There are so many attackers who have made a huge impact in the game this year, however, because I have I am limited to the top ten, these are the top ten forwards that I think have been impressive this season.
