The 2023 WNBA Season is in the books as eyes begin to look towards the WNBA off-season including both free agency as well as the upcoming 2024 WNBA Draft. As teams look to rebuild to contend during the 2024 WNBA Season, the top five teams landing on the Top 10 Best WNBA Teams 2023-2024 Rankings list all are loaded with talent while having an opportunity to compete next season. As the season has come to a close the Las Vegas Aces lands as the top WNBA team after a strong 2023 WNBA regular season as well as an even more impressive WNBA Playoffs while taking home the WNBA Championship.
Headlining the top stars on the Aces team included A’ja Wilson who was in the running for the WNBA MVP Award as well as teammates Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum who all averaged at least 17 points per game this season.
As the Aces are the best teams in the WNBA, the team is joined in the top five by the New York Liberty who finished with the 2nd best record in the WNBA and the team the Aces knocked off in the WNBA Championship. In addition to those two teams the other top five teams in the league include the Connecticut Sun, Dallas Wings, and Washington Mystics.

Another team that struggled during the 2023 WNBA Season is the Phoenix Mercury who struggled to gain any consistency while the veteran roster led by Diana Taurasi and Britney Griner failed to keep up with the younger faster teams in the league.
Overall, the Mercury who will have the number two overall pick during the 2024 WNBA Draft finished with just nine wins over 40 games en route to last place within the WNBA.
The team’s struggles showed up on both ends of the floor as the team averaged just 76.6 points per game while allowing the 4th most points per game mark in the league at 84.9 points per game. With a strong WNBA free agency crop and a high draft pick the Mercury have the potential to bounce back during the 2024 WNBA season.
Seattle Storm
Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention
Just missing the Top 10 WNBA Teams 2023-2024 Rankings list is the Seattle Storm who finished with just an 11-29 overall record during the 2023 WNBA season. After losing multiple stars during the offseason through trades and free agency, the Storm was left without proven scorers which showed up during the course of the season while finishing 11th out of 12 teams in scoring while averaging just 78.8 points per game.
Despite their struggles the Storm continue to have one of the top scorers in the league Jewell Lloyd on the roster who finished the season averaging 24.7 points per game. In addition to their struggles scoring the Storm also struggled on the defensive end of the floor allowing 84.5 points per game. Now the Storm must wait for the 2024 WNBA free agency to tip off as well as the 2024 WNBA Draft to retool for next season.
Top 10 Best WNBA Teams
10. Indiana Fever

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 WNBA Teams 2023-2024 Rankings is the Indiana Fever who have the potential to be one of the up and coming teams in the near future. However, that said the team struggled outside of Kelsey Mitchell, Nalyssa Smith, and Aliyah Boston on the offensive side of the ball.
Each of those three stars averaged at least 14.5 points per game while Boston stepped in big as a rookie averaging 14.5 points per game to go along with 8.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.9 blocked shots per game.
Like a few of the other teams near the bottom of the WNBA, the future looks promising including the potential to add either Angel Reese or Caitlin Clark with the number one overall pick during the 2024 WNBA Draft.
9. Los Angeles Sparks

One of the top overall defensive teams in the WNBA, the Los Angeles Sparks put together a tremendous season on the defensive end of the floor while finishing allowing the 3rd fewest number of points per game at 80.5 per contest.
However, despite the impressive performance from Nneka Ogwumike who averaged 19.1 points per game and 8.8 rebounds, the Sparks offense struggled to score all season long while finishing with the 3rd lowest scoring total in the WNBA at just 78.9 points per game.
After a solid 5-5 finish the Sparks found themselves looking from the outside into the WNBA Playoffs after missing the field by one game. Now the Sparks will look to retool through free agency and the 2024 WNBA Draft to bounce back during the 2024 WNBA Season.
8. Chicago Sky

After an up and down roller coaster of a season for the Chicago Sky the team finished off the regular season strong winning six of their last 10 games including three straight games to secure the final WNBA playoff spot.
Despite having six players who appeared in at least 38 games during the regular season the Sky finished in the middle of the pack on both ends of the hardwood. On the offensive side of the floor Kahleah Copper carried the load leading the team while averaging 18.7 points per game to go along with two assists and 4.4 rebounds. Despite the strong effort the Sky finished the season ranked 6th in scoring while averaging 81.7 points per game.
Meanwhile on the defensive end of the floor the Sky allowed the 6th fewest number of points per game at 83.4 per contests. In the end the Sky struggled on the defensive end of the floor at times costing them a better record and finish during the regular season.
7. Atlanta Dream

In the middle of the pack of the WNBA team’s sit the Atlanta Dream who finished the season ranked 5th in scoring averaging 82.5 points per game while the team’s defense allowed the 6th most points per game. Nonetheless the Dream showcased potential all season while finishing tied with the 5th best record in the WNBA at 19-21 on the season.
In addition to the solid regular season the Dream earned their first trip to the WNBA Playoffs since the 2018 WNBA season while still having a strong returning team for the upcoming season.
As the future looks bright for the Dream, their strong season came to an end with an opening round sweep by the Dallas Wings during the 2023 WNBA Playoffs.
6. Minnesota Lynx

Another WNBA team who put together a strong finish to the regular season while securing a playoff berth was the Minnesota Lynx who finished the season with a 19-21 overall record after winning five of their last 10 games of the season. The Lynx were led by three stars who put together strong seasons including rookie Diamond Miller who averaged 12.1 points per game to go along with 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and nearly one steal per game.
In addition to Miller the Lynx roster included top scorer Napheesa Collier who averaged over 21 points per game as well as Kayla McBride who averaged over 14 points per game.
The team showed their potential all season long after losing six straight games to start the season as well as seven of their first 10 overall contests. Despite the strong finish the Lynx failed to get past the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the WNBA Playoffs.
5. Washington Mystics

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 WNBA Teams 2023-2024 Rankings is the Washington Mystics who put together a solid season winning 19 of 40 games while making the WNBA Playoffs.
Much of that success took place as the team dealt with a lengthy list of injuries including Elena Delle Donne who appeared in just 23 of the teams regular season games while leading the team in scoring over that stretch while averaging 16.7 points per game. In addition, other double digit scorers Shakira Austin and Ariel Atkin each missed at least 13 games as well.
Nonetheless the Mystics finished strong winning five of their remaining 10 games to secure a playoff spot before losing to the New York Liberty to close out their playoff run. The offseason will be key for the Mystics who have stars Natasha Cloud and Delle Donne both as free agents.
4. Dallas Wings

One of four WNBA teams to pick up at least 20 wins during the 2023 WNBA Season is the Dallas Wings who finished in 4th place in the WNBA standings after winning 22 of 40 games during the regular season.
The Wings led by 5th year star Arike Ogunbowale who was unstoppable on the offensive side of the floor while racking up a team high 21.2 points per game while also adding 4.5 assists. With Ogunbowale leading the offensive charge the Wings finished 3rd in the WNBA in scoring while averaging 87.9 points per game.
However, despite being strong on the offensive side of the floor the Wings defense let them down all season long while allowing 84.9 points per game while finishing allowing the 3rd most points in the WNBA. After an opening round sweep of the Atlanta Dream, the Wings defense struggled to slow down Las Vegas losing three straight games in the WNBA Semifinals.
3. Connecticut Sun

The Connecticut Sun were as balanced as any team in the WNBA during the 2023 WNBA Season in route to a 27-13 overall record including winning six of their last 10 games. On the offensive side of the hardwood the Sun were led by three players who averaged at least 12 points per game while appearing in all four regular season contest including Dewanna Bonner who led the team averaging 17.4 points per game to go along with 5.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
In addition to Bonner, the Sun had a deep roster of talented players including Alyssa Thomas, Brionna Jones, and Tiffany Hayes. The talented roster helped the team allow the fewest number of points in the league at just 79 points over the team’s 40 games.
The success continued over into he playoffs as the Sun picked up an opening round series win over the Minnesota Lynx before falling to the New York Liberty. Like a few of the other top teams around the league the off-season could be busy as Bonner, Hayes and Jones are potential WNBA Free Agents.
2. New York Liberty

After an off-season explosion last season, the New York Liberty jumped to the top of the best teams in the WNBA while making a run at the WNBA Finals before falling to the Las Vegas Aces.
Headlined by the key offseason acquisition of Breanna Stewart who helped pace the Liberty’s offense, the Liberty posted a 32-8 overall record. Stewart, who the team signed alongside Courtney Vandersloot during free agency along with Jonquel Jones formed a big three that was difficult for opposing teams to shut down.
Overall, the Liberty finished the season 2nd in scoring averaging 89.2 points per game while allowing the 4th fewest number of points per game at 80.6 per contest. The offseason has the potential to go in a bad direction based on the team’s ability to re-sign top stars Stewart and Jonquel Jones who the team acquired in a trade before last season.
1. Las Vegas Aces

In at number one on the Top 10 WNBA Teams 2023-2024 Rankings list is the Las Vegas Aces who capped off a strong regular season with a 34-6 record. The success did not stop there as the Aces steam rolled through the WNBA Playoffs and the WNBA Finals.
After sweeping the Chicago Sky in two games in the first round and the Dallas Wings in three games in the WNBA Semifinals, the Aces knocked off the 2nd best team in the WNBA, the New York Liberty in four games to repeat as WNBA Champions.
The Aces are loaded with talent all over the floor including WNBA MVP candidate A’ja Wilson as well as Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young. Despite potentially losing a few pieces this offseason the tools are there for the Aces to make an attempt at a three peat next season.
