The game of football continues to evolve in the National Football League as players continue to enter the league bigger, stronger, and faster. This evolution of the NFL player has created a new style of football built around high scoring offenses with more passing than ever before.
One position that continues to see change is the tight end position, which was once a position, used for blocking with some involvement in the passing game to now being a key weapon. When you look at the Top 10 NFL Tight Ends 2023 Rankings list each has the ability to make a big play on any throw.
One of those top tier tight ends is the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce, who is one of the faces of the team, has ranked among the leaders in catches, receiving yards, and touchdown receptions among all tight ends in the NFL.
Kelce is not the only highly productive tight end around the league as he is joined by the likes of Mark Andrews of the Baltimore Ravens, George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers, Darren Waller of the New York Giants, and T.J. Hockenson of the Minnesota Vikings. Here is a look at the Top 10 Best NFL Tight Ends 2023 Rankings list.
Honorable Mention
Dalton Schultz
Team: Houston Texans
2022 Stats: 57 REC, 577 YDS, 5 TD, 10.1 AVG
Landing just outside of the Top 10 NFL Tight End Rankings list is the newly acquired Houston Texans tight end Dalton Schultz.
Schultz, who signed with the Texans after the 2022 NFL season ranked among the tight end leaders in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.
The former Dallas Cowboys tight end was a key member of the team’s success while finishing the season with the 4th most points per game (27.5) in the NFL.
The former Stanford Cardinal star finished the season averaging 10.1 yards per catch on 57 catches for 577 total yards with five touchdowns. Big question moving into 2023 is whether or not the Texans offense can take a step forward with Schultz lined up at tight end.
Gerald Everett
Team: Los Angeles Chargers
2022 Stats: 58 REC, 555 YDS, 4 TD, 9.6 AVG
Entering the 2022 NFL season, Gerald Everett may have been left off the list of the top tight ends in the NFL. That all changed during the season as Everett put together his best season of his NFL career setting career highs with 58 catches and 555 receiving yards while also tying his career high with four touchdown receptions.
Setting in as another weapon for Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers high passing attack, Everett took advantage of his opportunities in the passing game while also averaging 6.3 yards after the catch.
Top 10 NFL Tight Ends
10. Tyler Higbee
Team: Los Angeles Rams
2022 Stats: 72 REC, 620 YDS, 3 TD, 8.6 AVG
Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 NFL Tight Ends 2023 Rankings list is the Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee.
The veteran tight end continued to be a reliable source of the team’s offense despite a rotating door at the quarterback position due to Matthew Stafford dealing with an injury.
Nonetheless, Higbee stand managed to pull in 72 catches on the year to go along with 620 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions. The 620 receiving yards ranked 9th among all NFL tight ends.
9. Pat Freiermuth
Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
2022 Stats: 72 REC, 620 YDS, 3 TD, 8.6 AVG
The former Penn State Nittany Lions tight end has been an active contributor within the Pittsburgh Steelers offense since being drafted during the 2021 NFL Draft.
After a rookie season produced 497 yards on 60 receptions and seven touchdowns, Freiermuth put up a career high 732 yards on 63 catches last season while seeing his touchdown numbers drop to two.
However, much of that is due to the Steelers moving on from Ben Roethlisberger and eventually inserting Kenny Pickett into the starting quarterback spot later on during the season. Expect Pickett and Freiermuth to be in sync early on during the 2023 NFL season.
8. David Njoku
Team: Cleveland Browns
2022 Stats: 58 REC, 628 YDS, 4 TD, 10.6 AVG
David Njoku has all the physical tools to rank among the best tight ends in the NFL however, the quarterback position has been a revolving door for the Cleveland Browns over the years.
Now with Deshaun Watson under center at quarterback, Njoku has the potential to put together the best season of his career in 2023.
The Browns tight end finished the season with 628 yards on 58 catches with four touchdown receptions and 10 catches of at least 20 yards. In addition to receiving, Njoku ranked strong in both pass blocking and run blocking.
7. Evan Engram
Team: Jacksonville Jaguars
2022 Stats: 73 REC, 766 YDS, 4 TD, 10.5 AVG
The future looks bright for the Jacksonville Jaguars as Trevor Lawrence slowly develops into the face of the organization as well as one of the fresh young quarterbacks of the NFL.
With Lawrence taking a big step forward in his career, Evan Engram made the best of it during his first year with the Jaguars.
The former New York Giants tight end racked up a career high 766 yards receiving on a career high 73 receptions. His production ranked 4th among tight ends in receiving yards and tied for 3rd in receptions.
6. Dallas Goedert
Team: Philadelphia Eagles
2022 Stats: 55 REC, 702 YDS, 3 TD, 12.8 AVG
It is hard to look past the Philadelphia Eagles tight end as one of the best in the NFL as he continues to rank among the top tight ends in the NFL each season.
Goedert is coming off his second straight season pulling in at least 55 passes and third time overall during his NFL career.
In addition to the 55 catches, the Eagles tight end pulled in 702 yards receiving, three touchdown receptions while averaging 12.8 yards per reception. When targeted by Jalen Hurts, Hurts passer rating was 121.7 the third highest among tight ends targeted by their quarterback.
5. T.J. Hockenson
Team: Minnesota Vikings
2022 Stats: 86 REC, 914 YDS, 6 TD, 10.6 AVG
Rounding out the top five on the Top 10 NFL Tight Ends 2023 Rankings list is the Minnesota Vikings T.J. Hockenson. After starting off the 2022 NFL Season strong, Hockenson found his way and was traded to the Minnesota Vikings to end the regular season.
Hockenson provided the Vikings a strong pass catching tight end that has great size and speed at the position. Between the Lions and Vikings, Hockenson pulled in 86 catches for 914 total yards to go along with three touchdown receptions and 27 total first downs.
Despite averaging just 8.6 yards per catch, Hockenson was dominant in coverage ranking first with 20 contested catches to go along with a career high 129 targets.
A full season with a very explosive Vikings offense featuring Justin Jefferson and Hockenson could join the 1,000-yard receiving mark in 2023.
4. Darren Waller
Team: New York Giants
2022 Stats: 28 REC, 388 YDS, 3 TD, 13.9 AVG
New team and new start for the former Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller who has speed, athleticism and playmaking abilities that ranks as high as any tight end in the NFL.
Coming off two 1,000 yard receiving seasons in 2019 and 2020, Waller has dealt with a string of injuries over the past few seasons including missing seven games during the 2023 NFL season.
Nonetheless when on the field Waller averaged 13.9 yards per reception while catching 18 of his 28 catches for a first down. On those 28 catches Waller racked up 388 yards to go along with three touchdown receptions.
3. George Kittle
Team: San Francisco 49ers
2022 Stats: 60 REC, 765 YDS, 11 TD, 12.8 AVG
When it comes to the top three tight ends on the Top 10 Best TE in NFL Rankings list each are well deserving of the top overall spot.
This includes the San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle finished the 2023 NFL season pulling in 765 yards receiving on 60 catches while averaging 12.8 yards per reception.
In addition to the 12.8 yards per catch the 49ers tight end racked up 20 catches of at least 20 yards to go along with his 11 touchdown receptions.
Kittle finished the year ranked 5th in receiving yards, 2nd in catches of at least 20 yards, and 2nd in touchdown receptions. Look for the 49ers offense to continue rolling during the upcoming season with Kittle pacing the offense.
2. Mark Andrews
Team: Baltimore Ravens
2022 Stats: 73 REC, 847 YDS, 5 TD, 11.6 AVG
The 2022 NFL season was an interesting one for the Baltimore Ravens while dealing with another list of injuries including Lamar Jackson.
Despite not having the franchise quarterback under center Andrews continued to be the security blanket on offense and a prime target for Tyler Huntley.
Andrews finished the season with 73 catches for 847 yards to go along with five touchdown receptions. In addition, Andrews ranked high among all tight ends in run blocking with a 70.1 grade handed out by PFF.
A healthy Andrews along with a new offensive coordinator built around passing, a healthy Jackson, and additions of Odell Beckham Jr and Zay Flowers could allow Andrews more single coverage matchups in 2023.
1. Travis Kelce
Team: Kansas City Chiefs
2022 Stats: 110 REC, 1,338 YDS, 12 TD, 12.2 AVG
In at number one is a no brainer as Travis Kelce lands atop the Top 10 NFL Tight Ends 2023 Rankings list after another All-Pro caliber NFL season.
As the Chiefs transitioned from the departure of Tyreek Hill, Kelce remained a common target for Patrick Mahomes all season while finishing the season with a season high 152 targets at the tight end position.
Among those targets Kelce pulled in 110 catches for 1,338 yards to go along with 12 touchdown catches. Kelce also added 29 catches for at least 20 yards and 78 total first downs.
