The 2023 MLB Schedule continues to move along as the season approaches June while the hot summer months slowly arrive. As the heat begins to rise around the country the action on the baseball field continues to be a red hot start to the season.
This includes the game’s best shortstops who have gotten off to a hot start while putting together a solid start to the season. This type of production has landed many of the games top shortstops on the Top 10 Best MLB Shortstops 2023 Rankings list.
One MLB shortstop worth mentioning landing on the top shortstops list is the Toronto Blue Jays Bo Bichette. Bichette, who entered play on May 30th, leading all shortstops in hits with 78 also leads all of Major League Baseball after performing that task in each of the previous two seasons.
As Bichette lands on the list of the best shortstops in baseball other top shortstops joining him include Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets, Wander Franco of the Tampa Bay Rays, Bobby Witt Jr of the Kansas City Royals, and Dansby Swanson of the Chicago Cubs. Here is a look at the Top 10 MLB Best Shortstops 2023 Rankings.

Xander Bogaerts
Team: San Diego Padres
Landing just outside of the Top 10 on the Top 10 MLB Shortstops 2023 Rankings list is the San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts. Bogaerts, who signed an 11-year $280 million dollar contract with the Padres during the offseason, is off to another solid start in 2023.
The Padres shortstop is currently batting .253 on the season with 49 hits including seven doubles and seven home runs while driving in 19 runs and scoring 29 runs.
Through the first two months of the season Bogaerts currently ranks 6th in hits, 7th in batting average, 6th in runs scored, and 6th in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) with a 1.6 mark among all Major League Baseball shortstops.
Jorge Mateo
Team: Baltimore Orioles
Another MLB shortstop just missing the list of the best shortstops in baseball is Jorge Mateo of the Baltimore Orioles. Mateo is one key piece to an Orioles team performing among the best teams in all of baseball to start the 2023 MLB season.
The slick fielding shortstop ranks among the best defensive shortstops in also ranking strong at the plate in 2023. The Orioles shortstop is currently batting .227 on the season with 34 hits to start the season including six doubles and six home runs while driving in 22 runs and scoring 28 runs.
In addition, the speedy shortstop ranks 3rd among all shortstops with 15 stolen bases to start the season while also ranking tied for 2nd with a .9 Defensive Wins Above Replacement (DWAR) mark.
Top 10 MLB Shortstops
10. Chris Taylor
Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 MLB Shortstops 2023 Rankings list is the Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Chris Taylor.
Taylor enters the final few days of May ranked 3rd among shortstops with nine home runs while also driving in 21 runs and scoring 26 runs to start the season.
The Dodgers shortstop has also added six doubles, one triple, and four stolen bases over 125 at bats while not seeing the field full time for the Dodgers this season.
9. Willy Adames
Team: Milwaukee Brewers
One of the top power hitting shortstops in baseball is the Milwaukee Brewers 27-year-old shortstop Willy Adames. Adames, who is currently on the disabled list due to a head injury entered the 2023 MLB season coming off a 31 home run season to go along with 98 runs batted in.
The Brewers shortstop has continued to attempt to pace himself with those numbers in 2023 while picking up 38 hits over his first 185 at bats including six doubles and nine home runs. Currently Adames ranks tied for 3rd with Chris Taylor and Francisco Lindor among all shortstops in home runs this season.
8. CJ Abrams
Team: Washington Nationals
As you start to look for the best hitters and players among each position, one key category to consider is the player’s ability to drive in runs.
This is one thing that CJ Abrams has done all season for the Washington Nationals while ranking 4th among shortstops with 28 runs batted in over his first 50 games of the season.
As Abrams continues to rank among the best run producers in baseball, the third-year veteran is batting .241 on the season with eight doubles, two triples and five home runs over his first 170 at bats of the season.
7. Tommy Edman
Team: St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals shortstop who has split time on the season at the position continues to take advantage of his opportunities while picking up 45 hits over his first 172 at bats this season.
Entering the 2023 MLB season, Tommy Edman was coming off back-to-back seasons with at least 30 doubles and 11 home runs while scoring 91 and 95 runs in each of those seasons.
That same type of production has been presented to start the 2023 MLB season as Edman is currently batting .262 on the year with 10 doubles, two triples, six home runs, and 21 runs batted in for the Cardinals.
6. Jeremy Pena
Team: Houston Astros
Fresh off his 2022 World Series MVP award and the 2022 Gold Glove Award as a rookie, Jeremy Pena entered the 2023 MLB Season looking to build on his impressive rookie season.
Through his first 52 games of the season, Pena is doing everything in his power to keep the Houston Astros near the tops of the AL West division.
Over those 52 games, Pena is hitting .243 on the season with 12 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, and 26 runs batted in. Currently Pena ranks tied for 4th in doubles and 6th in run batted in among all MLB shortstops to start the season.
5. Bobby Witt Jr.
Team: Kansas City Royals
Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 MLB Shortstops 2023 Rankings is the Kansas City Royals second year shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Witt Jr who was a finalist for AL Rookie of the Year award last season continues to perform at a high level for the Royals to start the 2023 MLB season.
The 22-year-old shortstop currently ranks 2nd among all shortstops with 10 home runs to start the season over his first 224 at bats to start the season.
In addition to the home runs, Witt Jr has added 52 hits over his first 224 total at bats including eight doubles and four triples while driving in 26 runs.
4. Dansby Swanson
Team: Chicago Cubs
A second top tier shortstop landing a new home during the MLB offseason was Dansby Swanson who signed a long-term deal with the Chicago Cubs.
The former Atlanta Braves shortstop continues to produce at a high level that everyone has seen over the past seasons. Swanson is currently batting .270 on the season with 12 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 23 runs batted in, and 55 total hits to start the season.
In addition, the newly acquired Cubs shortstop ranks 3rd among all shortstops while posting a 2.3 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) mark.
3. Wander Franco
Team: Tampa Bay Rays
When it comes to the top three shortstops in baseball each are well deserving of the top spot including Wander Franco of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Franco, who had battled injuries at various times last season, is showcasing his abilities as one of the best hitting shortstops in baseball as well as the best fielding shortstop.
Currently Franco leads all shortstops with a 1.3 Defensive Wins Above Replacement (DWAR) and a 3.5 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) mark over his first 54 games of the season. Over those 54 games Franco is batting .298 on the season with 15 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, and 29 runs batted in.
2. Francisco Lindor
Team: New York Mets
After an up and down start to his New York Mets career, Francisco Lindor is playing at the level that made him one of the best shortstops in baseball while with the Cleveland Indians.
Currently Lindor ranks tied for 3rd among MLB shortstops with nine home runs to start the season while also sitting tied with Wander Franco with 15 doubles to start the season. In addition to those numbers Lindor has driven in 39 runs and scored 32 runs to start the season.
1. Bo Bichette
Team: Toronto Blue Jays
In at number one among the Top 10 MLB Shortstops 2023 Rankings list is the Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette. Bichette enters the 2023 MLB season coming off leading all of Major League Baseball in hits in back-to-back seasons.
That production has continued to start the season as Bichette leads all MLB players in hits with 78 to start the season while also adding a .338 batting average mark.
To go along with those numbers Bichette has picked up 11 home runs, 11 doubles, and 37 runs batted in over his first 54 games of the 2023 MLB season.
