Top Female Tennis Players of 2023 Right Now

2023 definitely turned out to be one of the most interesting and competitive WTA Tour tennis seasons in recent times. The main reason for this is the fact that in the first three Grand Slams this year, we had three different champions – Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open, Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros and Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon. At the time of writing, both semi-finals of the US Open have been played, and it is safe to say that the final on September 9 will be between the American Coco Gauff and the Belarusian Sabalenka, who could have a chance to win a second Slam title this campaign. But anyway, as we’re near to the end of the season, let’s make a ranking of the Top 10 Female Tennis Players 2023 List.

Honorable Mention

Daria Kasatkina

Starting with an honorable mention, the Russian Daria Kasatkina had a good season. She failed to win a title in 2023, but played finals in Adelaide in January and in Eastbourne in July.

However, she is currently in her best form of the year, having reached at least the 3rd round in 6 of her last 7 tournaments, including the Round of 16 in New York and a Quarterfinal at the Montreal Masters 1000.

Top 10 Female Tennis Players

10. Belinda Bencic

In 10 we have Belinda Bencic, who beat Kasatkina in the Adelaide Open. The Swiss also won the WTA 500 tournament in Abu Dhabi.

When it comes to her recent results, Bencic reached the Round of 16 in Wimbledon and US Open, as well as the quarters in Montreal.

The last tournament before the US Open was a disaster for her – she lost in 1st round of the Cincinnati Masters to the Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa.

9. Elina Svitolina

Elina Svitolina didn’t compete at all in 2022 due to a back ailment, but she bounced back quickly, reaching the quarters in Paris and the semis in London earlier this season.

The US Open hasn’t been great for her (lost in the 3rd round to Jessica Pegula), but overall, she had a surprisingly successful 2023 season. She also won a title – in Strasbourg in May, right before the start of the Roland Garros.

8. Elena Rybakina

In terms of overall performance, 2023 was the best year in Rybakina’s career so far. But after winning the Wimbledon title last season, she has failed to equal or better her achievement at Grand Slams.

Rybakina played a final in Melbourne in January, but that remained her best performance at Slams this season. Speaking of titles and finals in 2023, she took the trophies at the Indian Wells and Rome Masters 1000, as well as participated in a final in Miami.

Recently, she reached the semifinals in Montreal, the R16 stage in Cincinnati, and, disappointingly for her – the 3rd round in New York.

7. Ons Jabeur

We could say one similar and sure thing about Rybakina and Jabeur – they’d definitely be higher up on our rankings if their recent results were more positive considering their potential.

But still, both of them remain arguably in the top 5 best women tennis players in the world right now, despite the results.

The Tunisian won one title in 2023 – in Charleston, and had a dream run at Wimbledon, reaching the final, but failing to win it against the underdog Vondrousova. In New York she decreased the bar after the final last year, losing in the Round of 16.

6. Marketa Vondrousova

The 24-year-old is definitely one of the top surprises of 2023. She missed more than half of the 2022 season and few were those, who thought she could equal, let alone beat her best Grand Slam finish – a final at Roland Garros 2019.

However, Vondrousova shocked everyone by winning the Tour’s most valuable title – Wimbledon, defeating Ons Jabeur in 2 sets. She also had a decent performance after her greatest triumph, reaching the quarterfinals in Cincinnati and most recently – in New York.

5. Karolina Muchova

In 5th place in our ranking, we have another Czech lady – Karolina Muchova, who is playing her best tennis ever this season. The 27-year-old had very inconsistent performances on Grand Slams this year.

Her results this year in majors are as follows: Australian Open – 2nd round, Roland Garros – Final, Wimbledon – 1st round, US Open – Semifinal.

A real rollercoaster, isn’t it? She didn’t win any title this year, but played one more big final in 2023 – in Cincinnati a few weeks ago, losing to Coco Gauff.

4. Jessica Pegula

A very close one, but due to the bigger experience and more consistent performance, we ranked Pegula one place higher in the ranking. The American won the Montreal Masters 1000 a month ago and also participated in the final of the WTA 500 Doha Open earlier this season.

But what are her stats on Grand Slam titles? A far more consistent performance than Muchova or Vondrousova for example: quarters in Melbourne, 3rd round in Paris, quarters in London and Round of 16 in New York.

3. Coco Gauff

In 3rd we have probably the biggest sensation of the year and for sure the most surprising one. Coco Gauff just qualified for her 2nd Grand Slam final (after RG 2022) and will play Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open final on Saturday.

This season she bagged one title in each category – WTA 250 in Auckland, WTA 500 in Washington DC and WTA Masters 1000 in Cincinnati. You are thinking the same, right? She could have the chance to finish her 2023 in the best way possible if she manages to beat her opponent.

2. Iga Swiatek

A decent season for the world №1 (before the official ranking update on Monday), but the tennis critics expected a lot more from the Pole superstar than only one Grand Slam title.

But still, she took 4 trophies until now in 2023, including the Roland Garros, Doha Open, Stuttgart Open and the one on home soil – Warsaw Open. On the other majors, she totally disappointed her fans, failing to even qualify for the semi-finals – R16 in Melbourne, quarterfinals in London and R16 in New York.

She also reached the semis in the two Masters 1000 tournaments between Wimbledon and the US Open – in Montreal and Cincinnati.

1. Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka – the girl who went through so much in 2022, qualifying for 3 finals and losing each one despite her great tennis. In 2023, she is definitely the player who, thanks to the combination of incredible consistency and astonishing tennis, undoubtedly takes the first place in our rankings.

She played at least a semifinal in every major this year – something that hadn’t happened since 2016 (Serena Williams achieved it back then).

Sabalenka won the first Grand Slam of the year – the Australian Open and will be the big favorite on Saturday against Gauff for the US Open “grand” battle. The Belarusian also won the title in Madrid, as well as the one in Adelaide.
