Ranking the best NCAA College Basketball Point Guards of 2024 with names such as Tyler Kolek, Isaiah Stevens, Xavier Johnson and more

The 2023-2024 NCAA Men’s college basketball season is bouncing along as the final few weeks of the regular season has arrived. With teams all over the country looking to build their NCAA resumes for a chance to be selected during the March Madness Selection Show and a chance to compete in the Men’s National Basketball Championship. Many of these great teams are led by stellar play at the point guard position by some of the best players in all of college basketball. One of those talented point guards is the Marquette Golden Eagles senior point guard Tyler Kolek.
Kolek who is in his third season with the Golden Eagles is posting his best season of his career while playing the prototypical point guard position. Over 23 games this season, the Golden Eagles point guard is averaging a career high 15.6 points per game while also averaging 7.5 assists per game while ranking second in college basketball in assists.
A second standout point guard among men’s college basketball is the Colorado State Rams Isaiah Stevens. Stevens currently sits tied with Kolek for the second most assists per game over his first 24 games of the 2023-2024 Men’s Basketball schedule. Joining Kolek and Stevens among the best point guards in college basketball include Tristen Newton of the UConn Huskies, Xavier Johnson of the Southern Illinois Salukis, and Boo Buie of the Northwestern Wildcats.

Zakai Zeigler
School: Tennessee Volunteers
Just missing the Top 10 College Basketball Point Guards 2024 Rankings list is the Tennessee Volunteers point guard Zakai Zeigler.
The junior point guard is as explosive as any point guard in the country while ranking among the best ball handlers in college basketball.
Overall, the Long Island, New York native is averaging a career high 11 points per game to go along with 5.6 assists per game in addition to 2.6 rebounds, and two steals per game. On the season, Zeigler has posted two double doubles while posting 11 different games with at least six assists.
Dajuan Harris Jr.
School: Kansas Jayhawks
When it comes to top tier players at the point guard position, too much emphasis is laid on scoring; however, the true position of point guard relies on a player who can run the offense, shoot when required, and facilitate the basketball while setting up his teammate.
Dajuan Harris Jr of the Kansas Jayhawks fits the complete resume while being one of the most unselfish players in the country. The Jayhawks point guard currently ranks 9th in the country while averaging 6.5 assists per game while also averaging 7.9 points and two rebounds a game.
Meanwhile on the defensive end of the floor Harris Jr ranks among the leaders in steals averaging 1.6 per contest this season.
Top 10 College Basketball Point Guards
10. RayJ Dennis
School: Baylor Bears
Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 College Basketball Point Guards 2024 Rankings list is RayJ Dennis. Dennis, who had previously spent two seasons with the Boise State Broncos and Toledo Rockets over his first full season, has taken center stage for the Baylor Bears this season in his senior year.
The Bears point guard currently ranks 10th in the country while averaging 6.4 assists. Meanwhile Dennis is averaging 13.3 points per game while also adding four rebounds per game and shooting 39.4 percent from behind the point line.
Over his first 23 games of the season, Dennis has posted two double doubles and 13 games with at least seven assists.
9. Sahvir Wheeler
School: Washington Huskies
The former SEC conference point guard Sahvir Wheeler has slowly settled into the role of the Washington Huskies main option at the point guard position. Through the first 23 games of the season Wheeler is currently averaging a career high 15.4 points per game while also adding six assists per game.
Meanwhile on the defensive end of the floor Wheeler has posted 1.2 steals per game and added 3.3 rebounds per game.
The former Kentucky Wildcats and Georgia Bulldogs star has posted three double doubles on the season to go along with 13 different games averaging at least 16 points in a contest.
8. Daniss Jenkins
School: St. John’s Red Storm
In his first season with the St. John’s Red Storm, Daniss Jenkins has been brilliant while ranking among the leaders in scoring (14.2) and assists (5.5) per game among the point guard positions.
Jenkins who transferred in for his senior season after playing for the Iona Gaels last season currently leads the Red Storm in assists while also ranking second on the team in scoring.
In addition, Jenkins has been strong on the defensive end of the floor all season averaging 1.5 steals while limiting the play of opposing guards all season.
7. Jamal Shead
School: Houston Cougars
Entering the final few weeks of the regular season the Houston Cougars are looking to make a run within the Big 12 conference while taking home the title.
One player helping to lead the charge is the Cougars senior point guard Jamal Shead who is averaging 12.7 points per game to go along with 5.8 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game.
Overall, the Cougars are 21-3 on the season with all three losses coming in games Shead has failed to reach 15 points while the team has posted seven wins when he tops the mark.
6. Elijah Hawkins
School: Minnesota Golden Gophers
Another point guard who may get overlooked due to his lack of scoring totals is the Minnesota Golden Gophers point guard Elijah Hawkins. However, when it comes to the position Hawkins is as strong of a floor general and leader with the ball in his hands as any point guard in the country.
The Golden Gophers point guard currently leads all of men’s college basketball while averaging 7.6 assists per game while also adding nearly two steals per game (1.9) on the defensive end of the floor and 8.3 points per game.
Over 28 games on the season, Hawkins has turned in three double doubles while also posting 11 games with at least eight assists.
5. Boo Buie
School: Northwestern Wildcats
Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 College Basketball Point Guards 2024 Rankings list is the Northwestern Wildcats point guard Boo Buie. Buie who is expected to be a potential NBA lottery pick during the 2024 NBA Draft is posting his best season of his collegiate career to start the 2023-2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Season.
Buie who has played in 24 games this season is averaging a career high 18.8 points per game while also adding 5.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game.
Over those 24 games, the Wildcats point guard has posted 13 games with at least 20 point including a season high 31 points back in early December in the team’s upset win over the top ranked Purdue Boilermakers.
4. Tristen Newton
School: UConn Huskies
Coming off an iconic 2023 NCAA men’s basketball season that saw the UConn Huskies crowned as National Champions, Tristen Newton is looking to lead the Huskies on another deep run this season.
As the Huskies currently sit atop the AP Top 25 Men’s Basketball Rankings while posting a 22-2 overall record. Much of that success starts with the play of Newton who continues to rank among the best point guards in the country.
The fifth year senior is posting a strong season while averaging 15.2 points per game to go along with 6.6 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. Newton’s success also has included five double doubles on the season while helping the Huskies to a 4-1 record against AP Top 25 ranked opponents.
3. Xavier Johnson
School: Southern Illinois Salukis
One name that might go under the radar among the best point guards in the country is the Southern Illinois Salukis point guard Xavier Johnson.
Johnson who is in his final year of college basketball is pointing together a tremendous campaign while ranking 2nd in the country in scoring averaging 23.7 points per game.
Over 25 games to start the season, Johnson has posted 15 games with at least 20 points while also topping the 30 point mark in six of those contests. Meanwhile Johnson also ranks among the Top 15 in assists per game while posting 6.1 assists per game.
2. Isaiah Stevens
School: Colorado State Rams
A second top tier point guard ranking among the best in college basketball is the Colorado State Rams Isaiah Stevens. Stevens, like a few of the other top point guards on the list are currently nominated for the Bob Cousey award for the best point guard in the country.
Overall, on the year Stevens has six games with at least 10 assists and 10 other games with at least seven assists. The Rams point guard is currently sitting tied with Kolek with 7.5 assists per game to start the season.
In addition to being one of the top facilitators on the floor, Stevens is a tremendous shooter averaging 16.3 points per game while shooting 45.8 percent from behind the three point line and 48.8 percent from the field.
1. Tyler Kolek
School: Marquette Golden Eagles
In at number one among the best point guards landing on the Top 10 College Basketball Point Guards 2024 Rankings is the Marquette Golden Eagles point guard Tyler Kolek.
Kolek, who was recently selected to the Bob Cousey award list as one of the 10 best point guards in the country is as unselfish as any point guard in the game and one that looks to set up his teammates first.
The Golden Eagles senior point guard who is from Cumberland, Rhode Island is currently ranked tied for 2nd in the country with 7.5 assists per game while also adding 15.6 points per game. Kolek enters mid-February shooting 40.6 percent from behind the three point line, while also adding nearly five rebounds (1.9), and two steals (1.7) per game.
