Ranking the best NCAA College Basketball Shooting Guards of 2024 with names such as RJ Davis, Antonio Reeves, Kevin McCullar Jr. and more

The landscape of Men’s College Basketball is loaded with an extensive list of talented players including at the shooting guard position. As teams around college basketball continue to build their resumes for a shot at the Men’s National Basketball Tournament and a chance to play during March Madness, many of the top shooting guards in the country are helping to carry their respective teams. One of those players is the North Carolina Tar Heels shooting guard RJ Davis who has the team fighting for an ACC Championship while claiming the top spot among the Top 10 College Basketball Shooting Guards 2024 Rankings.

Davis, who is in his final season with the Tar Heels, is putting together the best season of his four year career with the team. The White Plains, New York native is averaging career high in scoring (21.4), steals (1.3), and three point percentage (41.1%). Honorable Mention

Boogie Ellis

School: USC Trojans

Just missing the Top 10 Best College Basketball Shooting Guards 2024 Rankings list is the USC Trojans shooting guard Boogie Ellis. Ellis is one of the most versatile guards in the country as well as top all around shooters.

The 5th year senior has been solid both on the offensive side of the floor as well as defensive side for the Trojans all season. Entering mid-February Ellis is currently averaging 16.4 points per game to go along with 3.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals.

Meanwhile the Trojans star is shooting 42.9 percent from the field as well as 42.3 percent from behind the three point line this season.

Dalton Knecht

School: Tennessee Volunteers

Another talented shooting guard who may go under the radar is the Tennessee Volunteers senior Dalton Knecht.

Knecht who transferred into the Volunteers program this season has not disappointed in his only season in Knoxville while averaging a career high 20.4 points per game.

In 24 games this season, Knecht has posted 12 games with at least 20 points including five games going over the 30 point mark. This includes a recent stretch of three 22 plus scoring performances while leading the Volunteers to a 2-1 record.

In addition to averaging over 20 points a game, the Volunteers shooting guard has posted 4.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while also averaging nearly one blocked shot per game (.9). 

Top 10 College Basketball Shooting Guards

10. Jahmir Young

School: Maryland Terps

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 College Basketball Shooting Guards 2024 Rankings list is the Maryland Terps shooting guard Jahmir Young.

The 2023-2024 NCAA Basketball season has been a roller coaster of a ride for the Terps however the senior shooting guard has been a bright spot while averaging a career high 20.9 points per game over the first 24 games of the season.

Over those 24 games, Young has posted at least 20 points in 14 games including at least 21 points in three of his last four games entering Valentines Day.

9. Tyler Thomas

School: Hofstra Pride

While all the larger schools get most of the attention one smaller school star that should be seeing a ton of attention as March Madness approaches is the Hofstra Pride senior shooting guard Tyler Thomas.

Thomas, who is in his second season with the Pride, is currently setting career highs in scoring (21.8), rebounding (5.4) and assists (3.4). In addition to averaging a career high 21.8 points per game over 25 games this season, Thomas is shooting 42.1 percent from the field as well as 36.8 percent from behind the three point line.

Meanwhile Thomas is also a tremendous defender on the defensive side of the floor while averaging over a steal per game (1.1).

8. Trey Alexander

School: Creighton Blue Jays

The third year Creighton Bluejays shooting guard continues to develop into one of the games top shooting guards while improving his all around game.

After increasing nearly every statistic from his freshman to sophomore season, Trey Alexander has continued that success this season increasing his scoring average from 13.6 points per game to 17.3 points per game while helping the Bluejays to an AP Top 25 ranking (17th) and an overall record of 18-7 on the season.

In addition to increasing his scoring, Alexander has also increased his career highs in rebounding to six rebounds per game, assists to nearly five assists per game (4.7) and overall field goal percentage to 45.1 on the season.

7. Johnell Davis

School: Florida Atlantic Owls

When it comes to the shooting guard position every team in college basketball is looking for a dynamic scorer who can shoot from all over the floor. One of those shooting guards this season has been the Florida Atlantic Owls junior Johnell Davis.

Through the Owls first 24 games, Davis is averaging a career high 18.6 points per game while shooting 48.9 percent from the field and 47 percent from behind the three point line.

Over those 24 games Davis has posted nine games with at least 20 points including a season high 35 in the teams upset 96-95 win over the Arizona Wildcats back in December. 

6. Caleb Love

School: Arizona Wildcats

Once a promising star for the North Carolina Tar Heels is now a key piece of the Arizona Wildcats team looking to make a deep run within the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament.

With Love playing at a prominent level the Wildcats enter mid-February sitting at 19-5 on the season atop the Pac-12 Conference while also sitting ranked 5th among the AP Men’s Top 25 Basketball rankings.

The senior shooting guard is averaging a career high 18.9 points per game over his first 24 games with the Wildcats while shooting 43.1 percent from the field. In addition to scoring, Love has added 5.1 rebounds per game to go along with 3.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

5. Issac McBride

School: Oral Roberts Golden Eagles

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 College Basketball Shooting Guards 2024 Rankings list is Oral Roberts Golden Eagles shooting guard Issac McBride.

After starting his career with the Vanderbilt Commodores, McBride has settled into a key role within the Golden Eagles roster while averaging at least 11 points per game in each of his three seasons with the team.

This includes during the 2023-2024 NCAA Basketball season where the 6 foot 1 inch shooting guard is averaging a career high 20.5 points per game to go along with 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

Overall McBride is also shooting 44.1 percent from the field to go along with 38 percent from behind the three point line while posting 14 games scoring at least 20 points.

4. Tyson Walker

School: Michigan State Spartans

Over the years the Michigan State Spartans continue to find talented guard play with Tyson Walker being the most recent talented guard to play for the school.

The senior guard has stepped up all season for the Spartans while averaging 18.4 points per game over his first 24 games of the season. With Walker playing at an elevated level the Spartans have started the season posting 16 wins over their first 25 games of the season.

Over that stretch Walker has averaged 18.4 points per game to go along with 2.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. In addition, the Spartans senior guard has been stellar on the defensive end of the floor while averaging just below two steals per game (1.9).

3. Kevin McCullar Jr.

School: Kansas Jayhawks

One name that had the potential to land within the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft was Kevin McCullar Jr of the Kansas Jayhawks. McCullar Jr who is in his second season with the Jayhawks has slowly transitioned into one of the best shooting guards in college basketball while also setting a career high in scoring while posting 19.5 points per game.

The San Antonio Texas native is shooting 47.2 percent from the field this season while also shooting 36.1 percent from behind the three point line. In addition, the Jayhawks shooting guard has also added 6.4 rebounds per game to go along with nearly five assists (4.6) and 1.5 steals per game.

On the season the Jayhawks are 8-2 in games McCullar Jr has topped the 20 point mark including picking up key wins over ranked opponents the Oklahoma Sooners (#9) and UConn Huskies (#4). 

2. Antonio Reeves

School: Kentucky Wildcats

Year in a year out the Kentucky Wildcats have some of the most talented rosters in all of college basketball. The 2023-2024 Wildcats team is no different as Antonio Reeves rounds out a star studded roster that is loaded with top tier freshmen.

The senior guard brings veteran leadership to the program while also adding a key scorer who is averaging 19.4 points per game.

After averaging 14.4 points per game last season, Reeves continues to improve this season while setting a career high in shooting while connecting on 49.8 percent of his shots as well as 43.7 percent of three point attempts. The Wildcats star is also averaging a career high 4.3 rebounds per game to go along with 1.6 assists.

1. RJ Davis

School: North Carolina Tar Heels

In at number one on the Top 10 College Basketball Shooting Guards 2024 Rankings is the North Carolina Tar Heels shooting guard RJ Davis.

Davis, who has been a key weapon within the Tar Heels roster for each of his four seasons with the team has taken his game to the next level this season while setting a career high while averaging 21.4 points per game.

In addition to averaging 21.4 points per game, Davis is shooting 41.1 percent from behind the three point line and 43.1 percent from the field while elevating his overall draft stock up. With the Tar Heels looking to make a deep March Madness run, the team will rely on Davis to continue his strong play down the stretch.
