Team USA Women’s Basketball ready for Olympic Paris 2024

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are slowly approaching as the opening ceremonies are set to get underway on Friday July 26th, 2024. As the countdown continues the excitement level continues to build around a wide range of the individual Olympic events as well as team Olympic events including Women’s Basketball. Headlining the top Olympic Women’s Basketball team entering the upcoming Olympics is the United States or shall we say Team USA as they land atop the Top 10 Olympic Women’s Basketball rankings.

The USA women’s basketball team has been the most dominant women’s team when it comes to the summer Olympics since the sport made its debut back in 1976 in Summer Olympics in Montreal. Since that time, the United States have won 10 total Gold Medals within the sport including winning a gold medal at each of the past seven summer Olympics.

As Team USA looks to extend that streak to eight straight Gold Medals as well as their 11th overall Gold Medal, they are joined by a solid group of women’s national basketball teams. A list that includes Canada, France, Australia, and Belgium.

Here is a look at the Top 10 Olympic Women’s Basketball rankings:

Honorable Mention

Puerto Rico

Notable Players: Arella Guirantes, Mya Hollingshed

Just missing out of the final spot on the Top 10 Olympic Women’s Basketball rankings list is honorable mention Puerto Rico who just like Serbia posted a 1-2 record to qualify for the Olympic games this summer.

Overall Puerto Rico is one of the thinner teams arriving in France with lack of talented depth including on the offensive end of the floor having only one player post double figure average in their three games earlier this year to get to the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Nonetheless the trio of Arella Guirantes, Mya Hollingshed, and Brianna Jones will look to use their size and athleticism to make some news in July.

Nigeria

Notable Players: Amy Okonkwo, Elizabeth Balogun, Promise Amukamara

The final 2024 Summer Olympics Women’s Basketball team is Nigeria who is newer to the equation but has strong depth after displaying that depth back during the Olympic Qualifying tournament earlier this year.

However, despite having a deep rotation, Nigeria lacks an extensive list of weapons offensively after posting just 179 points per game in pool play in a group that included Belgium and Team USA. Leading the way for Nigeria women’s basketball team is Amy Okonkwo who led all scorers averaging 15.3 points per game to go along with six rebounds.

Meanwhile Nigeria features talent at the guard position that features both Elizabeth Balogun and Promise Amukamara who combined to average over six assists per game.

Top 10 Olympic Women’s Basketball Rankings

10. Serbia

Notable Players: Yvonne Anderson, Dragan Stankovic, Angela Dugalic

Sliding in a number 10 on the Top 10 Olympic Women’s Basketball rankings list is the Serbia women’s basketball team. Serbia arrives at the 2024 Summer Olympics after surviving a difficult round of group A play during the qualifying tournament within a group that featured Australia and Germany.

Despite struggling defensively at times, Serbia is a strong offensive team led by Yvonne Anderson who averaged 19.3 points per game while Dragana Stankovic averaged 14.0 points per game.

Only concern with the Serbia team entering the Summer Olympics is the team’s lack of three-point shooting depth.

9. Germany

Notable Players: Satou Sabally, Leonie Fiebich

As the 2024 Summer Olympics is approximately just one month away, the Germany women’s basketball team is one team looking to slow down time while hoping star forward Satou Sabally is healthy to join the team.

Sabally who has yet to play during the 2024 WNBA season, is one of the team’s star weapons and a dynamic all around player who averaged 18.6 points per game to go along with 8.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists last season. Another star player for German looking to help her nation take home a medal during the Olympics is Leonnie Fiebich who averaged 18 points per game to help Germany qualify back in February.

Despite being outscored during 2024 Olympic Qualifying tournament in Brazil, Germany found a way to go 2-1 picking up wins over both Serbia as well as Brazil to advance in large part due to their strong rebounding performance.

8. Canada

Notable Players: Kayla Alexander, Nirra Fields, Bridgett Carleton

Team Canada enters the 2024 Summer Olympics as a team that has the talent to compete for the Gold Medal in women’s basketball, but the big question is whether or not they have the offensive fire power to compliment their ability to play strong defense.

Only time will tell if they do but for now, they are one team that has ambitious goals of standing on the podium with a gold medal to return to their respective nation. Despite picking up just one win back in February, Canada found a way to make it France while allowing just 201 points over the three-game stretch.

Leading the way is a strong trio of Kayla Alexander, Nirra Fields, and Bridgett Carleton who combined to average 40.7 points per game to go along with 26.1 rebounds and four assists per game. Alexander headlines the group after displaying her ability to score and attack the glass.

7. Spain

Notable Players: Megan Gustafson, Raquel Carrera, Maite Cazorla

As you start to look around at gritty defensive minded teams it is hard to look past Team Spain as the 2024 Summer Olympics in France approaches.

Spain is a crafty speed team that plays aggressive and uses their speed to their advantage including helping to lead their club to two key wins over both Canada and Hungary to advance to the Olympics.

Over the three-game stretch Megan Gustafson was dynamic as any offensive player within the tournament in Hungary while averaging 14.3 points per game.

However, the team’s defense stood out as seven different players averaged at least one steal including Queralt Casas who averaged 4.3 steals per game.

6. Japan

Notable Players: Mai Yamamoto, Saori Miyazaki, Evelyn Mawuli

One of the most athletic and well-rounded team entering the 2024 Summer Olympics is the Japan’s women’s basketball team that is athletic and fast as any team that will be play basketball in France this summer.

After winning two of three back during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in February, Japan enters the upcoming Summer Olympics as a favorite to land on the podium while landing a metal.

Back during the qualifying tournament, Japan showed their unselfish style of play that featured four players averaging at least 11 points per game, and two other players averaging at least eight points per game.

Japan plays a well-rounded game that also features great ball rotation and a strong cast of shooters that features three players who shot above 46.2 percent from behind the three-point line. Japan is led by dynamic shooter Mai Yamamoto who averaged 17 points over the three-game qualifying tournament.

5. Australia

Notable Players: Rebecca Allen, Eziyoda Magbegor, Isobel Borlase

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 Olympic Women’s Basketball rankings list is Australia who is coming put together an all-around great roster that dominated their respective qualifying tournament in Brazil back in February.

Led by trio of talented scorers that each combined to average at least double-digit points during the qualifying tournament and strong defense, Australia rolled to a 3-0 record during play including picking up wins over both Serbia and Germany who also qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

In three games, Australia outscored their opponents 220 to 180 while Eziyoda Magbegor lead the team in scoring averaging 12.7 points per game.

4. China

Notable Players: Yueru Li, Meng Li, Xu Han

The 2024 FIBA Basketball Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in China might have featured two of the top contenders to compete for the gold medal during the 2024 Summer Olympics with those teams being China as well as France.

China looks as dominate as any team within qualifying stage of the Olympics scoring 249 total points over a three-game stretch while picking up wins over both Puerto Rico and New Zealand.

While the team’s offense is strong, the teams defense is even better while holding their opponents to 198 total points that includes a contest against France who averaged 88 points per game. China is led by a trio of talented weapons including Yeuru Li, Meng Li, and Xu Han who each averaged over 16.3 points per game back in February.

However, Yueru Li is the one star that has the fire power both offensively as well as on the glass after averaging 23.7 points per game and 14.3 rebounds to help China qualify.

3. Belgium

Notable Players: Emma Meesseman, Julie Vanloo, Antonia Delaere

Another team that has showed their ability to play with the top women’s basketball teams in the world is Belgium.

Belgium who nearly pulled a stunning upset of Team USA back during the 2024 FIBA World Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament back in February has a strong trio of stars who averaged double figured during that tournament including Emma Meesseman who averaged 17.3 points per game back in February while averaging 5.7 assists per game.

Other talented weapons on Belgium include Julie Vanloo, Antonia Delaere, and Maxuella Lisowa-Mbaka who also put together a strong game against the United States roster.

2. France

Notable Players: Marine Johannes, Gabby Williams,

The one team that everyone needs to pay attention to heading into the 2024 Summer Olympics on the hardwood is Team France.

France is a deep roster loaded with talented players who can do a little bit of everything from attacking the rim, shooting from all over the floor while also having great ball movement and control.

In addition to a strong roster the play of Frances dynamic duo Marine Johannes and Gabby Williams delivers one of the best one two punches among the women’s Olympic basketball teams. France will look to build on their bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

1. United States (Team USA)

Notable Players: Diani Taurasi, A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart

In at number one on the Top 10 Olympic Women’s Basketball World Rankings list is the United States who enters the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics as favorite to take home their 11th Gold Medal within the sport.

The United States are loaded with fire power on both ends of the floor including leading All-Time scorer Diana Taurasi who will look to cap off a remarkable international career while adding her sixth gold medal.

Joining Taurasi on the roster includes seven of the 10 top scorers currently within the WNBA this season. This includes A’ja Wilson who is as strong of a scorer as anyone along with talented women basketball stars Kahleah Copper and Napheesa Collier.

Other top stars leading the United States in pursuit of another gold medal includes reigning WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, Jackie Young, Jewell Loyd, and Kelsey Plum.
