Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Rankings 2023-2024

The 2023-2024 Women’s College Basketball season is in the books as the South Carolina Gamecocks cap off a marvelous season taking home the National Championship. However as magical as the win two season was, the Gamecocks 2023-2024 performance was even more impressive while running away with 38 straight wins while going undefeated. While all eyes were on top tier players such as Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, the Gamecocks loaded roster of talent at every position made them as difficult to beat as any team while earning them the top spot among the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Rankings 2024 list.

Entering the 2023-2024 NCAA Women’s College Basketball many top talented teams were expected to compete for the top spot including the defending 2022-2023 Women’s Champions the LSU Tigers.

Ultimately the Gamecocks rolled through the competition all season long including picking up wins against top ranked programs including posting a 7-0 record against AP Top 25 ranked opponents during the regular season.

As the Gamecocks land atop the list of the best Women’s College Basketball teams, joining them among the list is the Iowa Hawkeyes, UConn Huskies, USC Trojans, and LSU Tigers.

Here is a look at the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Team Rankings 2023-2024:

Honorable Mention

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Conference: ACC

Record: 28-7

Just missing the Top 10 Women’s NCAA Basketball Rankings 2023-2024 list is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Irish rolled to a 28-7 record over the season while finishing second within the ACC Conference.

A team led by star freshman Hannah Hidalgo finished the season ranked 18th in the country in scoring (78.6 ppg) and 10th in the country in points differential while outscoring their opponents by 17.5 points per game.

Overall, the Fighting Irish capped off the regular season as hot as any team picking up five straight wins over AP Top 25 ranked opponents while pushing their overall record to 7-4 overall against ranked opponents.

Indiana Hoosiers

Conference: Big Ten

Record: 26-6

Another talented Women’s College Basketball team that just missed the list of the best teams over the course of the 2023-2024 season is the Indiana Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers played in a difficult Big Ten conference loaded with eight teams picking up at least 20 wins including the Ohio State Buckeyes and Iowa Hawkeyes.

Even more impressive was the Hoosiers strong play at home including winning all 17 of their home games during the season.

On the season the Hoosiers finished the season with five players averaging at least 10 points per game including senior forward Mackenzie Holmes who led the way averaging 19.8 points per game.

10. UCLA Bruins

Conference: Pac-12

Record: 27-7

Sliding in at number 10 on the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Team Rankings 2023-2024 list is the UCLA Bruins. The Bruins had a roller coaster ride of the season at times looking like a team destined for greatness while struggling at others.

Nonetheless, the Bruins displayed their abilities down the stretch winning six of their final seven games during the regular season and eight of 10 overall final games with their losses coming to the USC Trojans and LSU Tigers in the Sweet 16 of the Women’s National Basketball tournament.

On the season the Bruins were as tough as any team within the Pac-12 finishing with a 27-7 record while five players averaged at least 10 points per game and a sixth player averaged 8.7 per game. The Bruins will return a loaded roster that features Lauren Betts and Kiki Rice who will be returning for their junior seasons.

9. Ohio State Buckeyes

Conference: Big Ten

Record: 26-6

One team that is getting overlooked among the best teams in Women’s College Basketball is the Ohio State Buckeyes who finished the season with a 26-6 record while posting the best record within the Big Ten Conference with an 16-2 overall mark.

Despite a tough stretch to end the season including losses to both the Iowa Hawkeyes and Maryland Terps, the Buckeyes managed to post a 4-2 overall record against AP Top ranked opponents.

On the season the Buckeyes finished the season as one of 16 teams to outscore their opponents by at least 15 points while also ranking 16th in the country in scoring averaging 79.3 points as a team per game.

8. Stanford Cardinal

Conference: Pac-12

Record: 30-6

When you look at the Stanford Cardinal women’s basketball team no star player stands out and no one superstar carries the program.

However, as you look at their success including posting a 30-6 record during the season the Cardinal solid roster of players worked as a team all season to rank among the best teams in the country.

This includes star junior forward Kiki Iriafen who led the team in scoring (19.4 ppg) and second in rebounds (11.0 rpg) joining fellow teammate Cameron Brink while averaging a double double on the season.

Despite racking up six losses, the Cardinal tough schedule played a large role in that as the team faced nine teams during the regular season, winning five of those contests.

7. Texas Longhorns

Conference: Big 12 Conference

Record: 33-5

As you start to look around the Big 12 conference the Texas Longhorns Women’s College Basketball team stacks up against the top teams within the conference as well as some of the best teams in college basketball.

The 33-5 Longhorns were dominant all season while outscoring their opponents by 22.4 points per game. Lacking the big-name star as other top ranked teams, the Longhorns success came from a deep roster that included six players averaging at least 20 minutes per game and two additional players averaging at least 18.5 points per game.

Led by their strong shooting including ranking 15th in three-point percentage (36.5%) the Longhorns finished 12th in scoring while averaging 80.1 points per game.

6. NC State Wolfpack

Conference: ACC

Record: 31-7

One of the most talented rosters in all of Women’s College Basketball, the NC State Wolfpack had one of the best six player rotations in basketball.

The deep roster allowed six players to average at least 26.4 minutes per game and at least nine points per game. In addition, among those six players four of the six players averaged at least six rebounds per game.

The deep roster allowed the Wolfpack to post an impressive 31-7 overall record with six of their seven losses coming against teams ranked within the AP Top 25 Women’s College Basketball rankings during the 2023-2024 season. In addition, 11 of their 31 wins came against AP Top 25 ranked opponents this season.

5. USC Trojans

Conference: Big Ten

Record: 29-6

Rounding out the Top 5 Women’s College Basketball teams landing on the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Team Rankings 2023-2024 list is the USC Trojans.

The Trojans were one of the under-radar teams to watch entering the Women’s National Championship led by their talented freshman Juju Watkins. Watkins averaged 27.1 points per game this year while pushing the Trojans to the next level including averaging 74.7 points per game.

The talented freshman was just one of three Trojans to average at least 10 points while junior center Rayah Marshall averaged a double double posting 10.2 points per game to go along with 10.5 rebounds.

Led by Watkins, the Trojans posted eight wins against AP Top 25 ranked opponents including back-to-back games to win the Pac-12 Championship.

4. LSU Tigers

Conference: SEC

Record: 31-6

Entering the season the LSU Tigers were a big favorite to repeat as National Champions after landing multiple transfers during the offseason.

However, the Tigers fell short of a repeat but that does not take away from how great of a team this team is on both ends of the floor.

Led by Angel Reese, the Tigers ranked among the top teams in the country including ranking second in scoring (85.9 ppg), fourth in rebounding (46.2 rpg) while outscoring their opponents by 22.5 points per game over the course of the season. Meanwhile the Tigers also held their opponents to just 36.9 field goal percentage and a 29.6 percent from behind the three-point line.

3. UConn Huskies

Conference: Big East

Record: 33-6

The landscape of Women’s College Basketball continues to evolve as the talent level continues to develop and the play of top tier women college basketball players to grow.

One team loaded with talent is the UConn Huskies who continue to land many of the top recruits in the country each season. This includes a core group of players including Paige Bueckers and Aaliyah Edwards who combined to average 39.5 points per game this season to go along with 14.4 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game.

On the season the Huskies ranked 15th in scoring (79.5 ppg), fourth in assists (19.5 apg), and third in points differential (+22.4).

Despite falling to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Final Four, the Huskies put together a great run in the Women’s Championship including picking up key wins over the Duke Blue Devils, USC Trojans, and Syracuse Orange while pushing their overall record to 33-6 on the season.

2. Iowa Hawkeyes

Conference: Big Ten

Record: 34-5

What a magical back-to-back season the Iowa Hawkeyes have put together including their team’s only two runs to the NCAA Women’s National Championship Game.

Led by the NCAA Player of the Year Caitlin Clark, the Hawkeyes were one of the most aggressive teams in the country and a team that could shoot the ball from all over the floor.

With Clark leading the country in scoring (31.6 ppg) and in assists (8.9), the Hawkeyes were difficult to slow down while the team averaged the most points per game (91.0) all season long.

Despite falling short against the South Carolina Gamecocks, it is hard to look past Clark and the Hawkeyes accomplishments despite lacking the overall top tier talent of other top programs.

1. South Carolina Gamecocks

Conference: SEC

Record: 30-0

In at number one on the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Team Rankings 2023-2024 list is the South Carolina Gamecocks.

It is hard not to like what the Gamecocks did all season while becoming the 10th team in the history of Women’s College Basketball D1 to complete an undefeated season while taking home the National Championship.

The Gamecocks were able to do it all as Dawn Staley continues to build greatness all across the floor each season. That was present all season as the Gamecocks finished the season leading the nation in points differential (+28.8) and blocked shots per game (7.8).

In addition, the Gamecocks finished off the season ranked third in rebounding (46.3 rpg), 12th in assists (18.5), and 12 in field goal percentage (67.1) Despite a difficult take including a stellar matchup against Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Gamecocks found a way to win 30 straight games this season.
