Last year’s Olympic Games and world championships have introduced several breakout stars in the Amatuer Olympics scene. Mark Petrovskii from Russia, Temirtas Zhussupov from Kazakhstan, and Tomoya Tsuboi deserve an honorable mention.

Top 10 Amateur Boxers

10. Robby Gonzales

Starting off the list, Robby Gonzales, a young American Amatuer boxer makes it in at #10.

The 25-year boxer became quite popular last year after he won a gold medal in the 2021 Belgrade world championships. He competed at light heavyweight and defeated some impressive fighters. He is a fighter to keep an eye on in the near future.

Robby Gonzales went 3-0 in 2022 so far with wins over John Caicedo, Cristian Pinales, and Isaias Filho with the latter beating in the AMBC Continental Championships 2022 Final.

9. Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine

Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine is an Italian Amatuer boxer, and he makes it on our list at #9.

Mouhiidine won a silver medal in the 2021 Belgrade world championships, and this year, he also got a gold medal in the European championships held in Yerevan, Armenia. Mouhiidine is also a former European Union Championships gold medalist and has two gold medals in the Mediterranean games.

Mouhiidine competed in the 2022 European Amateur Boxing Championships and won gold against Emmanuel Reyes avenging his loss against him earlier this year. In that same tournament he also had wins against Soheb Bouafia, Giorgi Chigladze, and Lewis Williams.

8. Yoenlis Hernández

Fighting out of Cuba, Yoenlis Hernández is a young 24 years old boxer, who became quite popular last year.

Yoenlis Hernández spent most of his early career competing on the very competitive Cuban National scene and had his breakout performance at the 2021 Belgrade world championships, where he won the gold medal competing at middleweight.

Yoenlis Hernández last fight was a win over Saidjamshid Jafarov in the Elorda Cup 2022 Final.

7. Andrey Zamkovoy

Andrey Zamkovoy is an Amatuer boxer from Russia. The 35 years old boxer has an amatuer record of 118 wins and 19 losses.

Last year, Zamkovoy won a bronze medal in the 2020 Olympics while competing in Welterweight. Andrey Zamkovoy also won Bronze in the 2012 London Olympics, and gold in the 2019 world championships.

Andrey Zamkovoy in 2022 has wins against Vakhid Abbasov, Yauheni Makarchuk, and Ivan Stupin.

6. Jahmal Harvey

Jahmal Harvey is an American Amatuer boxer, and he was one of the biggest breakout stars of last year.

Competing at featherweight, the only 19-year-old Jahmal Harvey won a Gold medal in the 2021 Belgrade world championships. He upset some high-level boxers and became the first American world champion since Rau’shee Warren back in 2007.

Jahmal Harvey so far has gone 3-1 with wins over Miguel Vega, Carlos Yan Perez, and Keoma Alahmedieh.

5. Roniel Iglesias

Roniel Iglesias is an Amatuer boxer from Cuba. He has a very decorated amatuer career, with two Olympic gold medals, and one bronze. He won a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last year.

Roniel Iglesias won a gold medal in the world championships in 2009, and a silver medal in 2017. He is also a two-time gold medalist in the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Before his pro debut this year he finished 3-0 with wins over Rafael Carbonell, Yeinier Rose, and Darian Castro.

4. Yurii Zakharieiev

Yurii Zakharieiev is an Amatuer boxer from Ukraine. At only 19 years of age, he became the first ever boxer to win both the Youth and Elite Amatuer world championships last year.

He won a gold medal in the 2021 Belgrade world championships, and a couple of months ago, he won a Bronze medal in the 2022 European world championships as well. He is a fighter to watch out for in the upcoming world championships.

So far in 2022 Yurii Zakharieiev he is a 9-1 fighter.

3. Saken Bibossinov

Saken Bibossinov is an Amatuer boxer from Kazakhstan. The 25-year-old boxer competes at flyweight, and last year, he won a Bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

He was a bronze medalist in the 2019 world championships, however, He came back stronger in the 2021 Belgrade world championships, and won his first gold medal. Bibossinov also won a Bronze medal in last year’s Asian World championships.

2. Oleksandr Khyzhniak

Oleksandr Khyzhniak is an amateur boxer from Ukraine. The 26 years old boxer has a very decorated amatuer career.

Last year, he won a Silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics competing at middleweight. He won gold in the 2017 Kharkiv European championships, and the 2019 Minsk European games. In the 2017 world championship at Hamburg, he also won a gold medal.

In 2022, he finished 5-0 and won Strandja 2022 with his final win over Pavel Sosulin.

1. Julio César La Cruz

Julio César La Cruz is a former Amatuer, and now Professional boxer from Cuba, who competes at heavyweight.

Last year, La Cruz won a gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics and the AIBA boxing world championships. Cruz is also a 2016 Olympic gold medalist and has won the Amatuer boxing world championships 5 times. He is also a 3-time gold medalist in the Pan American Games.

Cruz went 2-0 amateur before his pro debut this year.
