*Note: This is just for the month of August

August is a month that new seasons usually get started in, but this year was different.

The outbreak of coronavirus forced soccer to be suspended around the world and so the Champions League was concluded in that month.

Other competitions were played out but almost all European leagues were on a break after the completion of the 2019/20 season.

The Champions League was also changed to reflect the times we’re in with just single-legged quarterfinals and semifinals played in Lisbon Portugal.

Some players were outstanding as Bayern Munich won the Champions League and Arsenal won the FA Cup and Community Shield in England.

In this article, we look at the players that impressed in different positions during the month.

Goalkeeper

Manuel Neuer, Bayern Munich, Bundesliga

Neuer is one of the few players around the world who seem to be getting better with age.

The German has remained at his impressive best for so many years now and he was key as Bayern Munich won the Champions League in August.

He kept a clean sheet in the semifinals and finals against Lyon and PSG and it is hard to forget some of his outstanding saves in both games.

He will go down as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation when he retires.

Neuer moves above the likes of Jan Oblak as he jumps from the 5th position to the top of the rankings for goalkeepers in August.

Defenders

Marquinhos, PSG, Ligue 1

Marquinhos emerged as an unlikely hero for PSG in their run to the Champions League final and the Brazilian deserves to be recognized on our list.

He has been an important member of the PSG first team for a long time now and he even made the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or last year.

But the last season was a good one for him and the month of August was also key.

With just the Champions League left to play for in that month, he scored in the quarterfinals and semifinals to help PSG reach the final.

Marquinhos hasn’t entered the top ten before now, but this month sees him move abover everyone in the ranking to be the top defender of the month.

David Alaba, Bayern Munich, Bundesliga

Alaba has become an even more key member of the Bayern Munich starting XI despite seeing his left-back spot taken over by the impressive Alphonso Davies.

He now plays as a centre back and he was in the team and played the full game in all their matches in August.

He is one key member of their high line defending and he starred as they kept a clean sheet in the semifinal and finals against French opponents.

David Alaba also makes a fresh entry into the list because few players on our top ten played football in August, he enters as number two.

Thiago Silva, PSG, Ligue 1

Silva now plays for Chelsea, but he spent August as a player of PSG and he just fell short of ending his impressive time there with a Champions League crown.

Silva has been one of the best defenders in Europe for almost a decade and since he joined PSG in 2012, his performance hasn’t dropped.

He captained and played the full minutes in PSG’s run to the final of the Champions League.

Thiago Silva also comes into the list for the first time and we be the third best defender in the world for the month of August.

Midfielder

Thiago Alcantara, Bayern Munich, Germany

Liverpool is on the verge of signing the Spain international after he told Bayern Munich that he wants to join a new club.

He will leave the Germans as one of the best midfielders in the game and in the month of August, he really proved his worth.

He played all of Bayern Munich’s game in August and he was arguably their most effective midfielder in these matches.

Alcantara makes his enterance into our top ten rankings this month and he is top of the rankings for midfielders for August.

Strikers

Serge Gnabry, Bayern Munich, Bundesliga

Arsenal is still kicking themselves that they let Gnabry leave them after he failed to break into their first team.

The German has become one of the most recognizable and probably underrated players in the world.

He won the Champions League with Bayern Munich this season and that will be considered the high-point of his career so far.

He scored one goal in the quarterfinal and two in the semifinals as Bayern romped to their sixth Champions League crown.

Robert Lewandoski, Bayern Munich, Bundesliga

Lewandoski is simply addicted to scoring goals. The Polish striker is such a predator that you can never take your eyes of him when playing against him.

He scored 34 goals in just 31 league games last season and in the month of August, he netted four goals in three Champions League matches before the final.

He remains one of the best ever strikers and he would have won this year’s Ballon d’Or had the award not been scrapped for the year.

Lewandoski moves from third position to the top of the list for strikers in August.
