10. Daniel Hooker, UFC

Daniel Hooker has fallen twice to two of the top 5 fighters in the lightweight division in Dustin Poireier and at one point Michael Chandler. The latter in Chandler giving him a devastating KO. After the fight he laid his gloves in the cage signaling his retirement. Hopefully that was out of frustration and will be back soon.

9. Islam Makhachev, UFC

The Dagestani is currently 19-1 and has to be the most feared in the division. He’s won 7 in a row in dominant fashion and has not faced a top 10 opponent yet (He was scheduled to face Rafael dos Anjos multiple times but COVID-19 and injuries could not make it happen). He’s scheduled to face Thiago Moisés on July 17, 2021 at UFC Fight Night 191. Hopefully if he wins that he takes on a Top 10 opponent.

8. Rafael do Anjos, UFC

The former UFC Lightweight Champion has returned to the division after a multiple fight stint in the Welterweight division. He defeated a late replacement Paul Felder who subbed in for Islam Makhachev. If Islam can get past his opponent in July I hope him and RDA can finally get in the cage after failed tries in 2020.

7. Tony Ferguson, UFC

The former UFC Lightweight Champion has been dominated in his last three fights. The first being KO’d by current contender Justin Gaethje. The second being dominated by now champion UFC Lightweight Charles Oliveira and last being dominated by up and comer Beneil Dariush. A step back in competition is needed for him outside the top 10

6. Michael Chandler, UFC

“Iron” Michael Chandler entered the UFC from Bellator loudly with his KO win over Dan Hooker. He nearly won the vacant UFC Lightweight Title by almost finishing Charles Oliveira. A fight against Justin Gaethje would be exciting.

5. Beneil Dariush, UFC

Dariush is now in the Top 5 entering with a 7 fight win streak. His domination of Tony Ferguson solidified it and could be 2 fights away from a title shot. He’ll have to make serious noise in his next fight to somehow stand out in the mix of Chandler, Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje.

4. Conor McGregor, UFC

The one and only Conor McGregor looks to right his ship in a rematch against Dustin Poirier next month. McGregor went with a different style against Poirier utilizing a more of a boxing stance. It left him flat footed for Poirier to chop him down with leg kicks and to later finish. Mcgregor returns to his original style when he faces him in July.

3. Justin Gaethje, UFC

Before his submission loss against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin was on a KO spree. Names on his resume include James Vick, Edson Barboza, Donald Cerron, and Tony Ferguson. He’s at least 1 fight away from a title. I’d like to see him matched up against Michael Chandler to clear up the lightweight picture.

2. Dustin Poririer, UFC

“The Diamond” is so confident in himself he by passed a shot at the vacant UFC Lightweight Title after the retirement of Khabib Nurmagomedov for a big money fight with Conor McGregor. He is taking a big risk with this trilogy fight against McGregor when he could have secured the belt first. Either way it seems he’s confident enough to finish the Notorious one for good this time.

1. Charles Oliveria, UFC, Champion

What an amazing run by Charles Oliveria. “Do Bronx” has been in the UFC since 2010 and feels like we all watched him grow in the division. He came into the organization as a submission specialist to a man that can do it all. His sharp striking has been amazing, most notably his hands as he was able to KO Michael Chandler for the vacant UFC Lightweight Title. The new King of the division can now wait on the winner of Poirier vs McGregor to see who is next
