Ranking the final Top 10 NCAA College Basketball Teams for the 2022-2023 Season as the UConn Huskies go from #8 ranked into the March Madness Tournament to the Final Four and now NCAA Tournament Champions

The 2022-23 NCAA Men’s Basketball season has wrapped up with an exciting finish during another wild March Madness campaign.

After a strong season that saw multiple teams reign at the overall top spot among the Men’s AP Rankings, the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament didn’t disappoint delivering excitement till the final second of the Men’s National Championship Game.

A game that saw the UConn Huskies take home their 5th National Championship while earning them the top spot on the Top 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball Teams 2023 Rankings.

While the Huskies dominated March Madness, they were just one of many strong teams that showcased their talents during the Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Meanwhile other top teams that dominated all season included the Kansas Jayhawks, Alabama Crimson Tide, Purdue Boilermakers, Houston Cougars and Texas Longhorns.

In the end only one team could take home the National Championship with the Huskies putting together a marvelous run through March to take home that honor. Here is a look at the final Top 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball Teams 2023 Rankings.

Honorable Mention

Marquette Golden Eagles

Record: 29-7

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention #1

Landing just outside of the Top 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball Teams 2023 Rankings list is the Marquette Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles who finished with an overall 29-7 record while finishing the regular season atop the Big East.

Led by head coach Shaka Smart, the Golden Eagles had four different players average at least 11 points per game including Kam Jones who led the team averaging 15.1 points per game.

Over the course of the season the Golden Eagles won the Big East Tournament while posting a 7-2 record against AP Top 25 Ranked teams including the UConn Huskies twice.

Arizona Wildcats

Record: 28-7

The Arizona Wildcats posted a strong season over the course of the 2022-23 NCAA Men’s Basketball season while finishing second within the Pac-12 conference falling behind the UCLA Bruins.

After falling to the Bruins to end the regular season the Wildcats responded winning three straight games during the Pac-12 tournament including knocking off those same Bruins to win the Pac-12 Tournament Championship.

Despite their strong finish to the season, the Wildcats struggled to find consistency in their opening round loss to the Princeton Tigers.

10. UCLA Bruins

Record: 31-6

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball Teams 2023 Rankings list is the UCLA Bruins. The Bruins who finished the regular season as the Pac-12 Champions entered March Madness with a ton of potential while finishing the regular season with an 29-5 overall record before entering tournament play.

Led by senior guard Jaime Jaquez Jr would pick up back-to-back wins in the NCAA Tournament before falling to the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Jaquez led the Bruins in scoring (17.8) and rebounding (8.2) while three other players averaged at least 11 points per game this season.

9. Kansas State Wildcats

Record: 26-10

Previous Ranking: Unranked

One team that was often overlooked during the NCAA Men’s Basketball regular season was the Kansas State Wildcats. The Wildcats who finished the regular season and Big 12 tournament with a 23-9 overall record was a difficult team to matchup against all season.

The Wildcats posted a 5-5 record against AP Top 25 ranked opponents including a three-game stretch knocking off West Virginia (#24), Texas Longhorns (#6), and the Baylor Bears (#19).

That success showed up during March Madness as the Wildcats won three straight games to reach the Elite 8 before falling to Florida Atlantic to end their season.

8. Kansas Jayhawks

Record: 28-8

Entering March Madness, the Kansas Jayhawks were the early odds-on favorite to repeat as National Champions after another strong season.

Despite entering the season as the reigning champions, the Jayhawks took care of business winning six straight games to open the year including an impressive 69-64 win over the Duke Blue Devils.

Overall, the Jayhawks would post a 7-7 record against AP Top 25 ranked teams including that win over the Blue Devils. Despite high expectations the Jayhawks could not find a way to close the Arkansas Razorbacks before losing to them in the 2nd round of the Men’s Basketball National Tournament.

7. Tennessee Volunteers

Record: 25-11

Previous Ranking: Unranked

The Tennessee Volunteers are as talented as any team in the country and that talent was on display during the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

The Volunteers opened up with a key 58-55 win over the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns before knocking off the Duke Blue Devils. Despite impressive wins to open the tournament the Volunteers ran out of steam falling to Florida Atlantic.

Despite the loss, the Volunteers posted a strong resume over the course of the season including picking up AP Top 25 ranked wins against the Kansas Jayhawks, Texas Longhorns, Maryland Terps, and Alabama Crimson Tide.

6. Gonzaga Bulldogs

Record: 31-6

Previous Ranking: #7

One of the best regular season teams over the past 5-10 NCAA Basketball seasons continues to be the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Despite high expectations to compete for a National Championship each season the Bulldogs have failed to bring home a title.

The same can be said for the 2022-23 NCAA Basketball tournament after the Bulldogs lost to the eventual National Champions the UConn Huskies in the Elite 8.

Nonetheless, the Bulldogs finished the season with a 31-6 record, the WCC tournament title, and a 4-4 record against AP Top 25 ranked teams including the Alabama Crimson Tide (#4).

5. Purdue Boilermakers

Record: 29-6

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball Teams 2023 rankings list is the Purdue Boilermakers. The Boilermakers ranked among the best teams in college basketball for most of the season while holding the AP Top 25 Rankings number one spot multiple times over the course of the regular season and Big Ten tournament.

Led by junior center Zach Edey the Boilermakers ran to a 29-5 record during the season including posting a 3-2 record against AP Top 25 ranked teams before winning three straight games to win the Big Ten Tournament.

Despite the success of Edey, the Boilermakers lacked additional scoring weapons while getting knocked out in the opening round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament against Fairleigh Dickinson.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide

Record: 31-6

Previous Ranking: #5

The Alabama Crimson Tide finished the 2022-23 NCAA Men’s Basketball regular season with an impressive 29-5 overall record while holding onto the top spot on the AP Top 25 rankings.

The Crimson Tide who ranked among the top teams in the country all season started off the season strong winning five straight games including an 81-70 win over the 12th ranked Michigan State Spartans.

The Crimson Tide would finish the season with a 7-4 record including back-to-back wins over AP Top 25 ranked teams to win the SEC Tournament.

The Crimson Tide led by talented freshman Brandon Miller were difficult to beat all season long as well as through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament before their Sweet 16 loss to San Diego State.

3. Houston Cougars

Record: 33-4

Previous Ranking: #2

One of the few teams to hang around the number one spot on the AP Top 25 Men’s Basketball Rankings list all season was the Houston Cougars.

The Cougars put together an impressive resume all season long including going 31-3 during the regular season and conference tournament play.

Overall, the Cougars had a deep roster with six different players averaging at least 15 minutes per game, while five different players including Marcus Sasser averaging at least 10 points per game.

Their success during the regular season followed to open the NCAA Tournament while picking up back-to-back wins before losing to the Miami Hurricanes in the Sweet 16.

2. Texas Longhorns

Record: 29-9

Previous Ranking: #10

It is hard to look past the Texas Longhorns as one of the top teams in the country after a strong season which saw the team post an 8-6 record against AP Top 25 ranked teams.

That success included picking up back-to-back wins against TCU Horned Frogs (#22) and Kansas Jayhawks (#3) to win the Big 12 Tournament.

Led by senior guard Marcus Carr the Longhorns matched up against nearly every opponent all seasons including running through the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament before losing to the Miami Hurricanes in the Elite 8.

1. UConn Huskies

Record: 31-8

In at number one on the Top 10 NCAA Men’s Basketball Teams 2023 rankings list is the UConn Huskies. The Huskies who are coming off winning their 5th NCAA Tournament Championship put together an impressive run through March Madness while picking up five straight wins including wins against Miami in the Final Four and San Diego State in the NCAA Championship Game.

The Huskies relied on a combination of players including Adam Sanogo and Jordan Hawkins who each averaged at least 16 points per game over the course of the season. The Huskies enter the 2023-24 NCAA Basketball season as the team to beat.
