Top 10 College Basketball Shooting Guards 2023 Rankings

Ranking the best NCAA Shooting Guards of 2023 with names such as Taevion Kinsey, Terrence Shannon Jr., Joseph Girard III and more

The landscape of College Basketball continues to evolve as high school basketball players continue to arrive bigger, stronger, and faster than they were a year before.

With the emerging talent of the freshman, added to continue development of current College Basketball stars, the shooting guard position is loaded during the 2022-23 NCAA Basketball season.

As you start to look at the list of the top shooting guards in the country on the Top 10 NCAA Shooting Guards February 2023 list, each has the skills to play a key role in their team’s performance down the stretch.

Landing atop the list of the top shooting guards in the country is the Marshall Thundering Herd senior Taevion Kinsey. Kinsey has been strong since arriving to the Thundering Herd back during the 2018-19 NCAA Season.

Since then, the Columbus, Ohio native has continued to improve while ranking among the best shooting guards in the country while being named to the preseason Jerry West Award watch list.

In addition to Kinsey, the list of the top shooting guards of 2022-23 College Basketball include Aaron Estrada of the Hofstra Pride, Xavier Castaneda of the Akron Zips, and Terrence Shannon Jr of the Illinois Fighting Illini. Here is a look at the Top 10 NCAA Shooting Guards 2023 Rankings.

Honorable Mention

Kevin McCullar Jr.

School: Kansas Jayhawks

Just missing the Top 10 NCAA Shooting Guards February 2023 Rankings list is the Kansas Jayhawks senior shooting guard Kevin McCullar Jr.

McCullar Jr. is a tremendous all-around guard who can handle the rock but also play big while dominating the glass. The Jayhawks guard is currently averaging 10.3 points per game this season to go along with 7.9 rebound and 2.1 assists per game.

On the defensive end of the floor McCullar ranks among the best defenders at the shooting guard position while also forcing 2.4 steals per contest.

Santiago Vescovi

School: Tennessee Volunteers

A second shooting guard that just misses the rankings among the best shooting guards in College Basketball is the Tennessee Volunteers senior shooting guard Santiago Vescovi.

Vescovi enters the first full week of February 2023 averaging 11.9 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 2.9 assists per game.

Despite seeing a drop in shooting this season, the Volunteers veteran has shot at least 33 percent from behind the three-point line since arriving at Tennessee back during the 2019-20 NCAA Basketball season.

10. Joseph Girard III

School: Syracuse Orange

In at number 10 on the Top 10 NCAA Shooting Guards February 2023 Rankings list is the Syracuse Orange star and senior shooting guard Joseph Girard III.

The Glens Falls, New York native is currently posting a career high 16.6 points per game this season to go along with 2.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting 40.1 percent from the field.

Even more impressive has been Girard’s play on the road this season where he is averaging 17.6 points to go along with 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. 

9. Isaiah Wong

School: Miami Hurricanes

Entering the season expectations were set high for the Miami Hurricanes junior shooting guard Isaiah Wong. While the bar was set high, Wong has not disappointed his teammates or the fans of the “U” this season while averaging 16.2 points per game.

Wong has been strong on both ends of the floor while being as consistent as any scorer in the country. The Hurricanes guard is currently averaging 16.2 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per contest.

In addition, Wong is shooting 36.6 percent from behind the three-point line to go along with an 82.5 percent mark at the foul line and a 44.4 percent mark from the field.

8. Charles Pride

School: Bryant Bulldogs

When it comes to talented College Basketball players who might fall through the crack Charles Pride of the Bryant Bulldogs is one of those players.

Pride, who doesn’t play for the well-known basketball school as most of the other shooting guards on the list, has delivered on the floor all season for the Bulldogs.

Pride has posted six games with at least 20 points this season while also scoring at least 15 points in five additional games.

Overall Pride is averaging 15.6 points per game this season to go along with 6.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.

7. Adam Flagler

School: Baylor Bears

One of the most all-around shooting guards among the best shooting guards in basketball is Adam Flagler of the Baylor Bears. Flagler, who is averaging 15.1 points per game while shooting 41.6 percent from the field is also a tremendous ball handler who likes to get his teammates involved.

The Bears senior shooting guard is averaging five assists per game while sacrificing his own scoring line for the greater good of his team.

While shooting Flagler is shooting 42.1 percent from behind the three-point line while also shooting 82 percent from the free throw line and 41.6 from the field.

6. Terquavion Smith

School: NC State Wolfpack 

After averaging 16.3 points per game as a freshman, the NC State Wolfpack sophomore shooting guard has taken another big step forward this season.

Since returning to the team’s lineup Terquavion Smith is averaging 18.5 points per game to go along with 3.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.

Smith, who is expected to potentially be a lottery NBA Draft Pick during the 2023 NBA Draft continues to showcase his ability as an elite scorer.

Smith has posted two games with at least 30 points per game as well as seven games with at least 20 points this season.

5. Terrence Shannon Jr.

School: Illinois Fighting Illini 

Rounding out the top five shooting guards on the Top 10 NCAA Shooting Guards February 2023 Rankings list is the Illinois Fighting Illini star Terrence Shannon Jr.

Shannon Jr. is having a red-hot start to the 2022-23 NCAA Basketball season while seeing career highs in nearly every statistic on the floor.

Through 23 games this season Shannon Jr is averaging 17 points per game to go along with 5.1 rebounds, three assists, and 1.4 steals, all career highs for the senior shooting guard. In addition, the Fightin Illini star is averaging 43.8 percent shooting from the field this season.

4. Xavier Castaneda

School: Akron Zips

When it comes to the top four shooting guards on the list, each ranks among the top 15 scorers in all of College Basketball while averaging at least 20 plus points per game.

That said, Xavier Castaneda lands at number four while being the leader of the Akron Zips lineup. Castaneda, who is a senior this season, is averaging a career high 21 points per game while shooting 40.8 percent from behind the three-point line and 42 percent from the field.

To go along with the scoring, the Akron Zips shooting guard is averaging a career high 4.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game to go along with 1.1 steals per contests.

3. Aaron Estrada

School: Hofstra Pride 

As you start to look at the best shooting guards in College Basketball a common trend can be found as most are in their senior season.

That can be said for Aaron Estrada of the Hofstra pride who is set to finish out a strong college career while setting a career high in scoring this season. After scoring 18.5 points last season, Estrada is currently averaging 21.6 points per game this season.

Over his last three games Estrada has been brilliant, scoring at least 25 points in each of those contests while posting no fewer than four rebounds and three assists in each contest.

2. Jordan Dingle

School: Penn Quakers

While Jordan Dingle comes from a much smaller school than most on this list, it doesn’t take anything away from how great he has been at the shooting guard position for the Penn Quakers this season.

The junior shooting guard is averaging 24 points per game this year, a high among all shooting guards while also averaging 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest.

Dingle has scored at least 20 points in six straight games as well as in 19 of his last 20 games on the season. Dingle can score at will while also being able to shoot from 36.3 percent from behind the three-point line.

1. Taevion Kinsey

School: Marshall Thundering Herd

In at number one on the Top 10 NCAA Shooting Guards February 2023 Rankings list is the Marshall Thundering Herd senior shooting guard Taevion Kinsey.

Kinsey, who is the current front runner for the Jerry West Award for the top shooting guard, is wrapping up a stellar College Basketball career.

After averaging over 19 points per game in each of the previous two seasons, Kinsey is currently averaging a career high 21.4 points per game this season while also averaging 4.8 rebounds, and a career high 5.6 assists per contests. From the field, Kinsey attacks the glass while shooting 53.6 percent from the field.
