Ranking the best NCAA Women’s College Basketball Teams of March 2022 as we get into the NCAA March Madness Tournament

The battle to take home the 2022 NCAA Women’s National Basketball Championship has arrived as March Madness has officially taken center stage for the top teams around women’s college basketball.
After an exciting 2021-22 NCAA Women’s regular season and tournament schedule, the field of 68 including eight teams set to square off the final four teams to enter the tournament. Those eight teams will face off in four games set for Wednesday March 16th, 2022, and Thursday March 17th, 2022, while the full tournament gets set for tip off on March 18th, 2022.
Leading the charge for the Top 10 NCAA BB Women’s Teams rankings is the South Carolina Gamecocks who finished the season as the top overall team in women’s basketball after winning 29 of their 31 contests this season with their two losses coming by a combined three points.
In addition to the very talented Gamecocks team, a few of the other Top 10 teams include the NC State Wolfpack, Stanford Cardinals and Baylor Bears. Among these team’s a ton of talent is present with some of the game’s top women leading their charge for a chance to win a National Championship.
With that said, here is our list of the Top 10 NCAA Basketball Women’s Teams
Honorable Mention
BYU Cougars
Season Record: 26-3
One of the most impressive teams in the country during the season has been the BYU Cougars who posted an overall record of 26-3 while taking home the top spot in the WCC during the regular season.
The Cougars posted a 2-0 record during the regular season against AP Top 25 ranked programs including an impressive 61-54 win over a solid Florida State program. Leading the charge is a pair of dynamic guards in Shaylee Gonzales and Paisley Harding.
The two have combined to average 35.7 points per game to go along with 9.2 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 3.9 steals per contest. In addition, sophomore forward Lauren Gustin has averaged a double double scoring 10.8 points per game to go along with 11.5 rebounds per game.
Maryland Terps
Season Record: 21-8
It is hard to look past these Maryland Terps despite their struggles at times during both the regular season as well as during the Big Ten tournament. Nonetheless, the Terps have shown their abilities all season long while enduring one of the toughest schedules in the country including 10 games against AP Top 25 programs.
The team is loaded with talent including five different players averaging at least double figures and two additional players averaging at least 7.8 points per game while having eight different players average at least 22 minutes per contest.
Top 10 Women’s Basketball Rankings
10. Texas Longhorns
Season Record: 26-6
Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 NCAA BB Women’s Teams rankings is the Big 12 Tournament Champions the Texas Longhorns.
The Longhorns who are hot as any women’s program winning 11 straight games to finish the season and in route to winning the Big 12 championship picked up wins against four AP Top 25 ranked programs including back-to-back wins in the tournament against the Iowa State Cyclones and Baylor Bears.
The Longhorns lack the top tier star as a few of these other teams but their overall athleticism including on the defensive end make them a difficult team to matchup against.
9. Iowa State Cyclones
Season Record: 26-6
When you have one of the best players in the country on our team it is easy why you are considered a favorite by fans and analysts alike.
This is the case with the Iowa State Cyclones who are led by senior guard Ashley Joens who is ranked 19th overall in scoring averaging 20.2 points per game while also ranking 49th in rebounds per game posting 9.5 per contests.
In addition to Joens, the team has four other players averaging nearly five rebounds per game, and star point guard Emily Ryan averaging the fifth most assists per game in the nation with 7.1 per game.
8. Iowa Hawkeyes
Season Record: 23-7
While the Iowa State Cyclones are loaded with talent, another team from Iowa sits just ahead of them among the top 10 as the Iowa Hawkeyes land in at number eight. The Hawkeyes finished off the regular season tied with the Ohio State Buckeyes as the Big Ten regular season champion and knocked off top ranked Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten Championship Tournament.
The Hawkeyes are led by two of the game’s top women in Caitlyn Clark and Monika Czinano who both have opportunities to take home award hardware after their impressive seasons. Clark led the nation in scoring averaging 27.4 points per game while also leading the nation in assists per game with 7.9 per game to go along with 8.1 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, Czinano finished 12th in the nation averaging 21.1 points per game to go along with 6.1 rebounds. This dynamic duo is giving the Hawkeyes faithful something to cheer for during March Madness.
7. LSU Tigers
Season Record: 25-5
A surprise team that makes the Top 10 rankings is the LSU Tigers who surprised many within the SEC conference this season after finishing just behind the top overall team the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Tigers posted an impressive 6-1 record against teams ranked within the AP Top 25 with their only loss coming at the hands of the Gamecocks. Leading the charge for the Tigers has been senior guard Khayla Pointer who is averaging a team high 19 points per game to go along with 6.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game.
To go along with Pointer the Tigers have two other players averaging at least 9.1 points per game while Alexis Morris is averaging 15.8 points per game.
6. Louisville Cardinals
Season Record: 25-4
After the crushing 61-59 loss to the Miami Hurricanes within the ACC Tournament, the Louisville Cardinals are set to make a deep run during March Madness.
The Cardinals are a deep roster loaded with talent including six different players to average at least 20 minutes and at least five points per game while having three different players to average at least 11.5 points per game.
To go along with the scoring, the team has three different women shooting at least 40 percent from behind the three-point line including Emily Engstiler who is shooting 40.8 from three point while averaging 11.5 points per game and 9.1 rebounds.
5. UConn Huskies
Season Record: 25-5
One of the most dangerous teams entering the 2022 Women’s Basketball NCAA Tournament is the UConn Huskies who put together an impressive run including a key 70-40 win over Villanova within the Big East Championship game. Despite being without Paige Bueckers for most of the season, the Huskies could not be beaten for a majority of the season.
Now Bueckers is back as she plays back into game shape giving the team a dominant weapon and possibly the key to win the National Championship. In addition to Bueckers the team is loaded with All-Americans including Christyn Williams and Azzi Fudd to name a few.
4. Baylor Bears
Season Record: 27-6
Despite losing inside the Big 12 Championship Game, the Baylor Bears are possibly the team to beat entering March Madness as the Lady Bears have possibly the top overall WNBA Draft Pick Nalyssa Smith guiding their roster.
Smith is currently ranked 5th in the Nation in scoring averaging 22.5 points per game and 9th in the nation in rebounding averaging 11.5 per contests. While Smith presents opponents a huge challenge, the Bears trio of Jordan Lewis, Sarah Andrews and Queen Egbo are averaging a combined 33.7 points per game to go along with 14.7 rebounds per game and 10.6 assists per game.
3. Stanford Cardinals
Season Record: 28-3
These final three teams rounding out the Top 10 NCAA BB Women’s Teams rankings are all as deep loaded rosters who have the talent to run through the NCAA tournament bracket while making a run at the Final Four. One of those teams is the Stanford Cardinals who finished the season winning 20 straight games including a 73-48 win over Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game.
The Cardinals are led by sophomore standout forward Cameron Brink who is averaging 13.6 points per game to go along with eight rebounds per game. Along with Brink, junior guard Haley Jones is posting another terrific season averaging 131.1 points per game to go along with 7.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
2. NC State Wolfpack
Season Record: 29-3
The NC State Wolfpack women have been as good as any team within women’s college basketball picking up 29 wins in 32 tries with their only three losses all coming at the hands of AP Top 25 ranked programs. With those three losses the Wolfpack knocked off eight top ranked programs including the Maryland Terps, Duke Blue Devils and Louisville Cardinals.
As you look at the Wolfpack roster the team is deep with eight different players averaging at least 12.5 minutes, six different players averaging at least 20 minutes per game while having six players averaging at least 7.3 points per game. The group is led by senior leader Elissa Cunane who is wrapping up a stellar college career.
1. South Carolina Gamecocks
Season Record: 29-2
Sitting atop the throne as the top team among the Top 10 NCAA BB Women’s Teams rankings, the South Carolina Gamecocks find themselves as the team to beat entering the NCAA Tournament.
A Gamecocks team who is looking to bounce back after a disappointing ending during last year’s tournament. At the front of the team’s All-American candidate Aliyah Boston who is potentially playing herself into a top overall pick during the WNBA Draft.
Boston is averaging career highs in points (16.8 ppg), rebounds (12 rpg) and assists (1.9 apg). Add in the veteran leadership of Dawn Staley leading the charge and the Gamecocks have a chance to cut down the nets during March Madness.
