Top 10 Best College Football Teams 2022 Rankings

Ranking the best college football teams for the 2022-2023 NCAA season as the Georgia Bulldogs lead by Stetson Bennett maintain their #1 ranking and winning the National Championship Game

The 2022 NCAA Football season has come to a close after an exciting run from the opening kickoff of the season to the National Championship Game that concluded the schedule.

In the end only one team could take home the National Championship with the Georgia Bulldogs earning that honor.

While the Bulldogs repeat as National Champions the team also lands on the top of the Top 10 College Football Teams 2023 Rankings January list.

As the Bulldogs cruised to an easy win within the National Championship Game, it opened the door for talks on which was the number two team in the country as well as how important it is for College Football to expand the College Football Playoffs.

While that debate is left for another day, many of the other top college football programs are well worth joining the Bulldogs on Top 10 College Football Teams 2023 rankings January list. 

These teams include the Alabama Crimson Tide, Michigan Wolverines, TCU Horned Frogs, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Tennessee Volunteers. Here is a look at the Top 10 College Football Teams 2023 rankings January.

Honorable Mention

Tulane Green Wave

Record: 12-2

Previous Ranking: Unranked

Just missing the Top 10 College Football Teams 2023 rankings January list is the Tulane Green Wave. The Green Waves, who may be the biggest surprise on the list as well as within the AP Top 25 College Football Teams rankings put together an impressive 2022 college football season. 

Looking back the Green Wave were 3-1 in matchups against ranked opponents including knocking off USC Trojans to open up the season.

In addition, the team knocked off an impressive Kansas State Wildcats team that would finish the season ranked 14th in the country.

Overall, the Green Wave finished 26th in the country allowing just 20.5 points per game while their offense scored the 19th most points per game (36).

Utah Utes

Record: 10-4

Previous Ranking: Unranked

One of the more impressive teams within the Pac-12 conference during the 2022 NCAA football season has been the Utah Utes who finished the regular season 10-3 before dropping their bowl game to Penn State Nittany Lions 35-21.

Over the course of the season the Utes were 2-3 against ranked teams with their only loss against a team not ranked was their opening contests against the Florida Gators.

The Utes finished with one of the top ranked offenses in the country averaging 38.6 points per game to go along with the 11th most rushing yards per game (217.6).

10. Clemson Tigers

Record: 11-3

Previous Ranking: #7

Landing in at number 10 on the Top 10 College Football Teams 2023 rankings January list is the Clemson Tigers who finished atop the ACC with an 11-3 record.

The Tigers who are typically a College Football Playoff contender dropped two difficult matchups during the regular season including a heart breaking 31-30 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Despite the loss the Tigers bounced back with an impressive 39-10 win over the #23 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in the ACC Championship.

9. USC Trojans

Record: 11-3 

Previous Ranking: #5

The future arrived early for the USC Trojans after head coach Lincoln Riley from the Oklahoma Sooners as well as quarterback transfer Caleb Williams.

The move paid off as the Trojans ranked among the best teams in college football for most of the season while Williams finished as the 2022 Heisman Trophy Winner.

The Trojans offense finished 3rd in college football in yards per game (506.6) and points per game (41.4).

Overall, the Trojans were 2-3 against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll with their two wins coming against #15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish and #16 UCLA Bruins. 

8. Penn State Nittany Lions

Record: 11-2

Previous Ranking: #10

Playing in the loaded Big Ten East Conference the Penn State Nittany Lions rolled to an impressive 11-2 overall record while going 7-2 within their conference.

The Nittany Lions only two losses of the season came at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines who were both a part of the 2022 College Football Playoffs.

The team’s success was built around their defense that allowed the 9th fewest number of points in college football per game (18) and 16th fewest yards per game (317.9).

On the offensive side of the ball the Nittany Lions finished 21st in the country in scoring 35.8 while freshman Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen combined for 22 rushing touchdowns.

7. Washington Huskies

Record: 11-2

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention #2

One team that will be looking ahead till the 2023 NCAA Football season is the Washington Huskies who are coming off an 11-2 season while finishing ranked 8th in the AP Top 25 NCAA Football rankings.

The Huskies who were led by their high-powered offense and quarterback Michael Penix Jr finished 2nd in the country while averaging 515.8 yards per game to go along with 39.7 points per game.

After starting the season with four straight wins including a win over #11 Michigan State Spartans, the Huskies dropped back-to-back games.

However, the team would rebound finishing the season with seven straight games including their 27-20 win over the Texas Longhorns in the Valero Alamo Bowl. The Huskies finished the season 4-0 against ranked opponents. 

6. Tennessee Volunteers

Record: 11-2

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention #1

Headlining the most impressive teams in college football during the 2022 NCAA Football season is the Tennessee Volunteers.

Led by one of the most explosive offenses in all of college football, the Volunteers rolled to an 11-2 season picking up key wins against the Clemson Tigers, LSU Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Pittsburgh Panther.

Overall, the Volunteers posted a 5-2 record against teams ranked within the AP Top 25 Football poll. The Volunteers with Hendon Hooker finished the season ranked 1st in yards per game (525.5), 1st in points per game (46.1), and 5th in passing yards per game (326.1). 

5. Ohio State Buckeyes

Record: 11-2

Previous Ranking: #2

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 College Football Teams 2023 rankings January list is the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes who are coming off a strong season and a missed field goal away from playing in the National Championship Game.

As you look at the Buckeyes team they are as loaded with talent as any other team in the country including Marvin Harrison Jr. at the wide receiver position and C.J. Stroud at quarterback.

The Buckeyes are a well-balanced defense on both sides of the ball finishing ranked 13th in fewest points allowed per game (19.3) and 2nd in points scored per game (44.2).

4. Michigan Wolverines

Record: 13-1

Previous Ranking: #3

The tops of the Big Ten were loaded with fire power that featured both the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines who made the College Football Playoffs as well as the Penn State Nittany Lions.

At the top of the Big Ten was the Wolverines who went undefeated during the regular season before winning the Big Ten Championship.

Led by their stout defense that allowed just 13.4 points per game, opposing offenses struggled to make plays. These struggles added with the Wolverines ability to score points (40.4 points per game) played out across the season.

Overall the Wolverines were 2-1 against ranked opponents with their only loss coming to the TCU Horned Frogs in the opening round of the College Football Playoffs.

3. TCU Horned Frogs

Record: 13-2

Previous Ranking: #4

Despite their crushing defeat to the Georgia Bulldogs in the National Championship, the TCU Horned Frogs 2022 NCAA Football Seasons was nothing to be ashamed of.

The Horned Frogs ran through the Big 12 during the regular season winning all 11 games including wins against Kansas State Wildcats, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Kansas Jayhawks, and Texas Longhorns who all were ranked within the AP Top 25 poll at the time of their meeting. 

During the season the Horned Frogs averaged 38.8 points per game to go along with 455 yards per game.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide

Record: 11-2

Previous Ranking: #8

The debate for the College Football Playoffs to expand will continue till the time the NCAA elects to add at least four more teams.

Till then each season you will have one team that was well deserving of a spot and that team this year was the Alabama Crimson Tide.

While the Crimson Tide lost two games during the regular season it came in against a difficult SEC team that is loaded with a ton of talent against two teams that were both ranked inside the Top 10 teams in the country.

As you look at the firepower on the Crimson Tide roster including Bryce Young on offense and Will Anderson Jr on defense the team finished ranked inside of the Top 10 in points scored (41.1) and points allowed (18.0). 

1. Georgia Bulldogs

Record: 15-0

Previous Ranking: #1

No argument is needed as for which team was well deserving of the top spot on the Top 10 College Football Teams 2023 rankings January list.

That team is the reigning National Champions the Georgia Bulldogs who not only won the National Championship but blew out the TCU Horned Frogs in the Championship Game.

The Bulldogs allowed just 12.8 points per game while scoring 41.1 points per game. Over the course of the 2022 NCAA Schedule, the Bulldogs posted five wins against ranked opponents this season including the LSU Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes and the Tennessee Volunteers.
