The Washington Name Change

The Washington Football Team Name Change Should Only Scratch the Surface to Nationwide Change for Equality

After backlash from corporate sponsors and national media backlash, Washington’s professional football franchise is looking to change the name. We know the change has come due to the “Cancel Culture” era, during which 2020. So far this year, there has been a rebranding of the Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben food brands and NASCAR outlawing the confederate o from races, and it is only a matter of time until this longtime fight was going to end. The team soon to be formally known as the Washington Redskins was founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves and became the Redskins a year later.

Dan Snyder has been the worst owner in professional sports in the 21st century for several reasons due to a myriad of reasons. Whether it is a lack of on-field success on the team, the way they treat his employees, and even suing longtime fans. The turmoil in the top of the organization has gone so toxic that the other minority owners Fredrick Smith, Robert Rothman, and Dwight Schar are trying to sell their shares. As far as this issue, this has been an issue for almost half a century when Edgar Bennett Williams served as a team owner.

The term “Redskin”, is a slur for Native-American in the 1600s the same way that African Americans were referred to as the N-Word in the days of slavery. When my ancestors were being whipped and hung to death, the last thing they heard was the N-Word. Many Native Americans listened to that very same word right before they got their head chopped off or were forced off their native land during the Trail of Tears. At this moment in history is when where over 46,000 Native Americans died due to starvation and the myriad of diseases such as smallpox, the bubonic plague, and the common cold. As for the team name to be called the Redskins this name of the professional franchise placed in the nation’s capital is embarrassing, and a change has been long necessary.

This is a change that should go deeper than a sports team name because it is only at the surface level. I, as well as other minorities, should fight injustices before we have another George Floyd or Brionna Taylor situation. Solutions should be voting for your local municipal judges, house representatives, and Congress members instead of focusing on who is in the White House’s offices. Our focus should be focusing on defunding our police force, free Medicare, and affordable public housing. One of the few shining lights that have come out of this worldwide pandemic is that we didn’t have sports, the bar, and other luxuries to give us a diversion from the essential issues that were in plain sight that long needed to be addressed. The Cleveland Indians are reviewing their team name after removing the Chief Wahoo logo in 2018, and we will see what this new culture can do for college and professional sports in the future.

Editor’s Note: The name change is happening soon. Vote on what should be the new name in the poll
