The art of winning consistently is one of the most difficult changes of leading any NFL team as a head coach. In general, just being able to keep a good football team performing well is a big-time challenge in the National Football League.

From off-season moves to injuries to rookies performing at a high level to inconsistent play at key positions, head coaches have a difficult task managing each player, the entire team, and finding a way to make everything come together each week.

While the task is difficult, the group of head coaches landing on the Top 10 NFL Head Coaches 2023 Rankings list have found a way to do exactly this while keeping their NFL teams respective each week.

One of those head coaches that is well deserving of the top spot among the best NFL head coaches list is the Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Reid has been one of the best head coaches in the NFL since his days with the Philadelphia Eagles and is now entering his 2023 NFL season coming off his second Super Bowl Championship with the Chiefs.

Joining Reid on the list of the best NFL head coaches is Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles, John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens, Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers, and Sean McDermott of the Buffalo Bills. Here is a look at the Top 10 NFL Head Coaches 2023 Rankings list.

Mike McCarthy

Team: Dallas Cowboys

Results

• Playoff Record: 1-1

Landing just outside of the Top 10 NFL Head Coaches 2023 Rankings is the Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.

While the Cowboys have had success with McCarthy as head coach during the regular season, the former Green Bay Packers head coach has struggled to get most of the Cowboys during the NFL Playoffs in each of the past two NFL seasons losing to the San Francisco 49ers in both sets of playoffs.

Doug Pederson

Team: Jacksonville Jaguars

Results

• 2022 Record: 9-8
• Playoff Record: 1-1

It is difficult not to look at the success of the Jacksonville Jaguars including the improved play of Trevor Lawrence and not mention Doug Pederson. Pederson was a top tier head coach during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles while helping to lead the team to the Super Bowl LII Championship.

Now as he enters his second season with the Jaguars expectations are set high for a team that won five straight games to end the 2022 NFL season while winning the AFC South and earning a trip to the playoffs.

Despite falling to the Chiefs in the AFC Divisional round of the playoffs, Pederson is well deserving of consideration as one of the best coaches in the NFL as the 2023 NFL schedule approaches. 

Top 10 NFL Head Coaches

10. Kevin O’Connell

Team: Minnesota Vikings

Results

• 2022 Record: 13-4
• Playoff Record: 0-1

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 NFL Coaches 2023 Rankings is the Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell, who is new to the head coach landscape after spending multiple seasons as an offensive coordinator, did not disappoint Vikings fans during the 2022 NFL season.

With O’Connell leading the way the Vikings posted a 13-4 record within the NFC North division while also posting one of the most impressive comebacks in the history of the NFL. 

9. Mike Tomlin

Team: Pittsburgh Steelers

Results

• 2022 Record: 9-8
• Playoff Record: 0-0

All the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to do with Mike Tomlin as the head coach is find ways to win football games. The same was said during the 2022 NFL season as Tomlin found a way to help turn around the team’s season while transitioning to the future quarterback of the team Kenny Pickett.

The move paved off with the Steelers just missing the playoffs despite many experts considering the season as a rebuilding year. Since taking over in 2007 the Steelers have not had a losing record while posting a .500 season just once over that time period. With Tomlin as head coach the Steelers continue to remain competitive no matter the NFL season.

8. Sean Payton

Team: Denver Broncos

Results

• 2022 Record: 5-12
• Playoff Record: 0-10

Rewind a few NFL seasons back and Sean Payton may land with the top three among the best NFL coaches in the NFL.

However, after leaving the NFL and now returning with the Denver Broncos, much concern has been put on Payton as he looks to turn around a team that struggled to perform on the offensive side of the football.

Payton will enter the 2023 NFL season looking to build on his career 152-89 record while looking to get the Broncos back into the playoffs. In four of his five previous head coach seasons, Payton has guided his teams to the NFL playoffs.

7. Bill Belichick

Team: New England Patriots

Results

• 2022 Record: 8-9
• Playoff Record: 0-0

If this was the list of the greatest NFL head coaches Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots would come in at number one. However, that isn’t the case, and the Patriots are not the same dynasty we have come to see of them.

In two of the last three seasons the Patriots have failed to reach the playoffs including during the 2022 NFL season after finishing with an 8-9 record. Nonetheless, Belichick found a way to keep the team in games despite struggles and injury to the quarterback position while also lacking a premier playmaker at the wide receiver position. 

6. John Harbaugh

Team: Baltimore Ravens

Results

• 2022 Record: 10-7
• Playoff Record: 0-1

What a whirlwind year it has been for the Baltimore Ravens while still finding a way to make it to the playoffs and nearly picking up a key win in them with the team’s backup quarterback. 

Some of that success is due to the consistent level of coaching with John Harbaugh as the head coach of the football team. After a hot start to the season, the Ravens lost star quarterback Lamar Jackson to leg injury, but the success continued, and the Ravens would head to the playoffs for the 10th time under Harbaugh.

Now entering the 2023 NFL season, Harbaugh will look to lead a Ravens team that will have a healthy quarterback as well as premier target wide receiver.

5. Sean McDermott

Team: Buffalo Bills

Results

• 2022 Record: 13-3
• Playoff Record: 1-1

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 NFL Head Coach Rankings of 2023 is the Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott. Since taking over the Bills before the 2017 NFL season, the team has ranked among the best in the NFL while McDermott has ranked among the best head coaches.

In five of his first six seasons with the Bills the team has posted a winning record while securing a playoff spot. This includes during the 2022 NFL season in which the Bills posted a 13-3 overall record while having one of the top offenses and defenses in the NFL. Failing to reach the AFC Championship Game lands the Bills head coach at number five among the top coaches in the NFL.

4. Zac Taylor

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

Results

• 2022 Record: 12-4
• Playoff Record: 2-1

One name that continues to impress among the NFL rankings is the Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. Taylor, who guided the Bengals to the Super Bowl during the 2021 NFL season found a way to win the AFC North division last season before losing in the AFC Championship Game.

Nonetheless Taylor will enter his fifth NFL season with the Bengals with pressure added after key upgrades from other top AFC North contenders. Over the past two seasons Taylor has posted a 22-11 record while winning the AFC North in each season. It is hard to look past the success of the Bengals with Taylor as the head coach.

3. Kyle Shanahan

Team: San Francisco 49ers

Results

• 2022 Record: 13-4
• Playoff Record: 2-1

Possibly the most impressive coaching performance of the 2022 NFL season came from the San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan and the 49ers faced a long list of injuries last season including injuries forcing the team to lose Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo at times before turning to Brock Purdy who was not expected to be a key part of the team.

Despite the move the 49ers kept winning while finishing with a 13-4 record during the regular season. The 49ers would continue that success through the playoffs; however, another injury forced another quarterback to step in and the team failed to overcome it losing the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

Shanahan found ways to get the most out of his team the entire season while helping them reach the playoffs for the third time over the last four seasons.

2. Nick Sirianni

Team: Philadelphia Eagles

Results

• 2022 Record: 14-3
• Playoff Record: 2-1

If it hadn’t been for the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles would land at number one among the best head coaches in the NFL. 

Sirianni, who was a former offensive coordinator, turned around the Eagles offense while also helping to transition Jalen Hurts into one of the top playmakers at the quarterback position.

The turn around in team offense and play at the quarterback position helped guide the Eagles to the NFC East title and a trip to the NFL playoffs. The Eagles wouldn’t slow down winning the NFC Championship and earning a trip to the Super Bowl.

As the 2023 NFL schedule approaches, it is exciting to see what the Eagles and Sirianni can accomplish now with Hurts being paid as one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the history of the NFL.

1. Andy Reid

Team: Kansas City Chiefs

Results

• 2022 Record: 14-3
• Playoff Record: 3-0

In at number one on the Top 10 NFL Head Coaches 2023 Rankings is the Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. Reid has been brilliant as the head coach of the Chiefs while also building strong chemistry with Patrick Mahomes.

The former Philadelphia Eagles head coach has built a Hall of Fame career including leading his teams to the NFL playoffs in eight straight seasons dating back to the 2015 NFL season.

This run includes two AFC Championships, four trips to the AFC Championship Game, and two Super Bowl Championships. Entering the 2023 NFL season the big question is can any head coach derail the Chiefs and Reid?
