The NFL has evolved into a game built around prolific offenses that can put up tons of yards per game while scoring a ton of points.

As teams continue to look to score more points and put up more yards, opposing defenses continue to get faster and faster while teams look for ways to get to the quarterback.

This has led to many great interior defensive lineman making major headlines including future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald who is nearly unstoppable up the middle.

As teams look to continue this offensive success, it starts with their offensive line including at the offensive guard position.

Looking back at the success of teams around the NFL during the 2021 NFL season, many of the teams that had success had great offensive lines while also featuring some of the best offensive guards in the NFL.

The group of offensive guards includes the likes of Zack Martin of the Dallas Cowboys, Joel Bitonio of the Cleveland Brown, and Quenton Nelson of the Indianapolis Colts.

With that said, here is our list of the Top 10 NFL Offensive Guard 2021-2022 Rankings:

Honorable Mention

Laken Tomlinson

Team(s): New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers

As Laken Tomlinson makes his transition to the AFC East, the former San Francisco 49ers offensive guard was a key part of the team’s success over the past few seasons.

This includes during the 2021-22 NFL season where he ranked among the best offensive guards in the NFL while also earning his first trip to the Pro Bowl.

Tomlinson, who played his college football with the Duke Blue Devils has been as durable and as consistent as any guard starting every game over the past four seasons.

Trey Smith

Team(s): Kansas City Chiefs

When any team makes a selection during the NFL Draft, the hopes are that player becomes a perennial Pro Bowl caliber player and one that can help their team win.

This was the case with Trey Smith last season as he jumped into the Kansas City Chiefs starting line while helping them correct their issues on the line from the 2020 NFL season.

Only thing holding Smith back from a higher spot on the Top 10 NFL Offensive Guard 2021-22 rankings list is his pass blocking abilities.

While solid, Smith needs to improve to become an All-Pro guard but demonstrated ranking near the top among all right guards in blocking last season according to PFF.

Top 10 NFL Offensive Guards

10. Kevin Zietler

Team(s): Baltimore Ravens

The veteran journeyman Kevin Zietler found a new home with the Baltimore Ravens last season after spending the previous two seasons with the New York Giants.

The move paid off as Zietler became the team’s starting right guard while ranking among the best right guards in the NFL. Over the 17 games, Zietler started each game for the Ravens while allowing just one sack over that time and 17 total quarterback pressures.

9. Joe Thuney

Team(s): Kansas City Chiefs

The 2021 NFL off-season got to work fast as the Kansas City Chiefs spent a ton of money solidifying their offensive line while putting together a great line to protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

One of those additions was the addition of Joe Thuney who anchored down the left guard position while the team also added Trey Smith during the NFL draft and acquired Orlando Brown Jr.

Thuney ranked near the top among all left guards in nearly every statistic graded on while allowing just one sack over the course of the 17 NFL game schedule. His success landed him a PFF grade of 81.2 for the season.

8. Wyatt Teller

Team(s): Cleveland Browns

To help anchor Wyatt Teller of the Cleveland Browns among the Top 10 NFL Offensive Guard 2021-22 rankings list, all you must do is look at the success the Browns have had on offense including their ability to run the ball.

The Browns ranked 4th in the NFL in rushing last season while averaging 145.4 rushing yards per game. Teller, who ranks much higher as a run blocker has been named to back-to-back second-team All-Pro selections as well as his first Pro Bowl in 2021.

7. Chris Lindstrom

Team(s): Atlanta Falcons

After a strong college career at Boston College, the Atlanta Falcons drafted Chris Lindstrom with their first-round pick during the 2019 NFL Draft.

After his rookie season, Lindstrom has started 33 consecutive games over the past two seasons while positioning himself among some of the best right guards in the NFL.

His strong performance was capped off during the 2021 NFL season in which the third-year star allowed zero sacks over 17 games with him starting at the right guard position. This type of production continued to help Matt Ryan put together solid passing campaigns each season.

6. Brandon Scherff

Team(s): Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Commanders

The Jacksonville Jaguars had their struggles last season, but Brandon Scherff was not one of those issues as he was not a part of the team.

However, his success with the Washington Football Team/Commanders over the past seven seasons helped make the teams decision easier to add Scherff this offseason.

While Scherff failed to take home an All-Pro selection last season, he did post his five Pro Bowl appearances while being one of the top right guards in the NFL. Since arriving in Washington, Scherff has allowed just 11 total sacks over the first seven seasons.

5. Shaq Mason

Team(s): Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots

Landing at number five on the Top 10 NFL Offensive Guard 2021-22 rankings list is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers newly acquired right guard Shaq Mason.

Mason, who was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft, spent his first seven seasons as the team’s starting right guard including during two of their Super Bowl titles.

During the 2021 NFL season, Mason ranked at the top among all right guards in the NFL in run blocking while continuing to improve as a pass blocker.

4. Michael Onwenu

Team(s): New England Patriots

The New England Patriots continue to find value within the NFL draft at the guard position after their success with Shaq Mason as well as their 2020 sixth round pick Michael Onwenu.

Onwenu, who dominated up front for the Michigan Wolverines, found himself playing all over the line for the Patriots as a rookie in 2020 including spotting up at both guard positions and the right tackle slot.

His strong play landed him ranked near the top among all guards ranked by PFF during the 2021 NFL season. His ability to both run block and pass block should help him slide into a full-time starting guard position in 2022.

3. Quenton Nelson

Team(s): Indianapolis Colts

When it comes down to the final three offensive guards in the NFL, each of them is well deserving of a top spot with Quenton Nelson of the Indianapolis Colts coming in at number three on the list.

The Colts veteran finished the 2021 NFL season ranked third overall based on total PFF grade of 86.7 just behind the grades handed out to Joel Bitonio and Zack Martin.

Nelson ranked 70 as a pass blocker and 89.4 as a run blocker while helping Jonathan Taylor rack up over 2,000 yards of total offense.

2. Joel Bitonio

Team(s): Cleveland Browns

With only two spots left each of these two players are well deserving of the top spot on the Top 10 NFL Offensive Guard 2021-2022 rankings list.

However, only one player can hold down that spot with Joel Bitonio landing as the number two offensive guard in the NFL.

Over the past six seasons, Bitonio has been as consistent as any guard in the NFL while earning at least a rating of 80 by PFF in pass blocking including an 85.9 ranking in 2021 to go along with a 92.5 run blocking grade. His overall performance landed him a total score of 93.6 by PFF outperforming Zack Martin.

1. Zack Martin

Team(s): Dallas Cowboys

Despite being out graded by Joe Bitonio, Zack Martin continues to be the best overall guard in the NFL and his grades from PFF back that.

Martin, who has been an anchor on the Dallas Cowboys offensive line helped the team post the highest number of yards in the NFL and most points per game among all teams in the NFL in 2021.

With his play on the field, Martin took home an overall grade of 93.4 with a pass blocking grade of 87.6 and a run blocking grade of 92.5 from PFF.

His play on the field earned him his fifth first-team All-Pro selection during the 2021 NFL season and his seventh Pro Bowl selection.
