By admin | November 17, 2022

It was quite a season this past 2022-2023 season, especially the postseason with the Panthers going on a run for the ages. The National Hockey League had such a great season, the end of the season has exploded with a plethora of expansion rumors in places like Salt Lake City and Atlanta. The future’s looking bright for the NHL. Here are the top ten teams from the 2022-2023 NHL season.

Honorable Mention

Tampa Bay Lightning

Previous Ranking: #6

The Lightning are playing in a tough division this season, very tough, every team besides Montreal, is competitive nightly.

The bottom three teams are all .500, it is the top of the division where it goes insane with Boston and Toronto. Tampa is currently 32-16-2 for 66 points, being led on the stat sheet by Nikita Kucherov.

New York Rangers

Previous Ranking: #10

The New York Rangers have been one of the best teams in the Metropolitan Division after some seriously rough years.

They have become one of the most consistent teams off of the play of Igor Shesterkin, who is 21-8-7 on the season.

The Rangers are currently being led in points by Mika Zibanejad with 52 points. The Rangers are 28-14-8 on the season.

Los Angeles Kings

Previous Ranking: #9

The Los Angeles Kings are one of the strongest teams in the very weak Pacific Division this season. The Kings are the kind of the team I want to root for.

They didn’t do what San Jose or Vegas did through big trades, just great drafting, and underrated trades. The LA Kings are currently being led in points by Kevin Fiala with 53 points. The Kings currently sit third in their division with a record of 28-18-7.

Winnipeg Jets

Previous Ranking: #7

Remember when the Jets looked like the force of the Central after the Blackhawks fell off? Well, those Winnipeg Jets are back.

Kyle Connor is unsurprisingly leading the way points wise, but the real story is in the net. Connor Hellebuyck is 24-15-0 with a 2.45 GAA. The Jets are currently three points out of the top spot in the Central with a record of 32-19-1 for 65 points.

Top 10 NHL Team Rankings 2023

10. Seattle Kraken

Previous Ranking: #8

The Kraken’s second year in existence was surely one to remember. The team played fantastic throughout the regular season, going 46-28-8, which helped them secure a wild card placement in the playoffs.

The team itself placed fourth in the Pacific Division and 7th in the Western Conference. They were led in goals by Jared McCann with 40 goals. Despite Phillipp Grubauer being the starter, Martin Jones led the team in wins with 27. Add to all of this Berniers probably won the Calder.

9. Edmonton Oilers

Previous Ranking: Unranked

I am not sure what the malfunction is in Edmonton. The Oilers have been one of the best teams in the NHL over the past few years, but they can never quite get the job done in the playoffs.

The Oilers themselves went 50-23-9 on the season and finished second in both the Pacific Division and the Western Conference.

Connor McDavid led the team in all statistical categories for points. The hope is they can add and get this team over the hump, otherwise, I am not sure what they do from here.

8. Toronto Maple Leafs

Previous Ranking: #3

They did it, they finally did it, the Toronto Maple Leafs made it past the first round in the playoffs. They were no match for the Florida Panthers, who were red-hot after beating Boston.

The Leafs themselves went 50-21-11 on the season, finishing second in the Atlantic Division and fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Auston Matthews and William Nylander tied for goals at 40, with Mitch Marner leading the team with 69 assists. The team has already started shaking it up with Kyle Dubas being relieved of duties.

7. Colorado Avalanche

Previous Ranking: Unranked

The end of the Colorado Avalanche’s 2022-2023 season was definitely disappointing, but not a step back. They lost some key players in the offseason, with Nazem Kadri being the biggest.

Their goaltending was solid, but not as good as it was last season. Despite being depleted and injured, the team went 51-24-7 on the season, good enough for first place in the Central Division and third in the Western Conference.

MacKinnon led the team in points at 111, despite missing some time on the season. They will be back with a chip on their shoulder for sure.

6. New Jersey Devils

Previous Ranking: #4

This is the New Jersey Devils team we have been hearing about and have been waiting for. Jack Hughes has finally taken that next step, and now he has his brother with him as well.

They had a fantastic season, going 52-22-8, missing first in the Metropolitan Division by only one point. They finished second in the Metro and third in the East after Boston and Carolina. They were led in all statistical categories in points by Jack Hughes. The sky’s the limit for this team.

5. Carolina Hurricanes

Previous Ranking: #2

Listen, I really want the Carolina Hurricanes to get over this hump and finally raise the Cup in Carolina again. They have been right there for so long, having complete teams and great goaltending.

They just can’t seem to get across the finish line. The Hurricanes went 52-21-9 on the season, finishing first in the Metro and second in the Eastern Conference.

They had some key injuries at the end that could have really helped them out, but I am hoping they can turn around and really get it going next year.

4. Dallas Stars

Previous Ranking: #5

What a season for the Dallas Stars! They almost won their division, missing it by one point, despite having four less wins than the Avalanche did.

Jason Robertson was the best player for the Stars this season, leading them in goals, assists and points. The standout for me on their season was the breakout of Wyatt Johnson. Johnson was a late round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft and came out to score 41 points in his rookie season.

The Stars went 47-21-14 on the season, finishing second in their division and fourth in the west. They inevitably lost to the Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.

3. Boston Bruins

Previous Ranking: #1

The Boston Bruins were the best team in NHL history after last season, going 65-12-5 on the season that gave them 135 points. The Hurricanes had 111 points behind them. They won the Presidents Trophy and their division by a large margin.

The team sadly collapsed in the first round after being up 3-1 in the series. David Pastrnak led the team in goals, assists, and points with 61 goals, 52 assists, and 113 points.

Linus Ullmark was also the best goalie in the NHL and surely a Vezina winner. Hopefully the team can bounce back, but I am not sure they can.

2. Florida Panthers

Previous Ranking: Unranked

The Florida Panthers had an absolutely improbable postseason. They made the playoffs by one singular point over the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then took off the top seed in the playoffs.

The Panthers went 42-32-8 on the season, rewarding them with the fourth spot in the Atlantic Division and the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference, just making it in.

They were led in points by Matthew Tkachuk at 109, but Carter Verhaeghe led the team in goals at 42. They were so close, but they could not edge off Vegas.

1. Vegas Golden Knights

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention

The Golden Knights are still hanging on to their consistent play over these past few seasons. Bringing in Jack Eichel was a big gamble, no pun intended, and so far, it has been working out.

Chandler Stephenson has been the points producer for the Knights this regular season with 12 goals and 34 assists. The Knights are currently 30-18-4 on the season, duking it out with Seattle for number one in the Pacific.

How would you rank these NHL teams so far in the 2022-2023 NHL season? Rank below to be added in the NHL Power Rankings.
