Ranking the best WNBA Players of the 2023 WNBA Season as Finals MVP A’ja Wilson of the WNBA Champions Las Vegas Aces leads the way

The basketball action on the hardwood was exciting all season as the 2023 WNBA season delivered excitement all season long. This includes a dynamic WNBA Finals between two of the best teams in the league the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty with both teams loaded with top stars of the WNBA. As you start to look around at the top WNBA players, two players competing for the top spot on the Top 10 Best WNBA Players 2023-2024 Rankings list are the Aces forward A’ja Wilson and the Liberty forward Breanna Stewart.

Wilson, who is coming off possibly her best season of her six year career with the Aces, posted career highs in points per game (22.8), rebounds per game (9.5), and blocked shots per game (2.2). Her contribution and leadership also played a key role in the Aces success while repeating as back-to-back WNBA Champions. Meanwhile Stewart capped off the WNBA season taking home her second WNBA MVP Award while helping to lead the Liberty to the NBA Finals against Wilson and the Aces. Joining Wilson and Stewart among the best WNBA players include Jewell Lloyd of the Seattle Storm, Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx, and Nneka Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks.

Kelsey Plum

Team: Las Vegas Aces

Any time any sports team wins multiple championships, especially back to back championships, it is easy to see the team loaded with talent. That is the case with the Las Vegas Aces who are loaded with talent including Kelsey Plum as well as A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young.

Plum, who is coming off her fifth season with the Aces posted 18.7 points per game over 39 games played this season while also adding 4.5 assists, 1.1 steals, and 2.4 rebounds per game. In addition, the Aces guard was solid from the field goal line shooting 91.2 percent as well as 38.9 percent from behind the three point line.

Kahleah Copper

Team: Chicago Sky

Just missing the Top 10 WNBA Players 2023-2024 Rankings list is the Chicago Sky veteran guard Kahleah Copper.

Copper, who played her college basketball for the Rutgers Scarlett Knights has blossomed into one of the top guards in the WNBA while being a solid scorer from all over the floor including behind the three point line.

Copper capped off a strong 2023 WNBA season posting a 40.4 three point field goal percentage mark while helping her set a career high 18.7 points per game mark.

10. Brittney Griner

Team: Phoenix Mercury

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 Best WNBA Players 2023-2024 Rankings list is the nine time WNBA All-Star Britney Griner. Griner, who has been as dominant as any WNBA star, bounced back strong after missing the entire 2022 WNBA Season.

Griner finished off the season averaging 17.5 points per game to go along with 6.3 rebounds while averaging 27.6 minutes per game, her fewest since joining the league back during the 2013 WNBA season. In addition, the dominant down low star added 1.6 blocked shots per game while creating a mismatch for other WNBA stars in the paint.

9. Alyssa Thomas

Team: Connecticut Sun

As you look around WNBA Players that can do it all it is hard to look past Alyssa Thomas as one of those stars who can not only elevate her game but also every player around her.

The former Maryland Terps star and current Connecticut Sun veteran is coming off a season averaging 15.5 points per game while also adding 9.9 rebounds and 7.9 assists.

While her points per game was well below some of the game’s top stars, her unselfish style of play impacts those numbers while helping the Sun all around. Overall, Thomas ranked 20th in scoring while leading the WNBA in rebounds and finishing 2nd in assists.

8. Jackie Young

Team: Las Vegas Aces

A second member of the Las Vegas Aces landing among the best players in the WNBA is Jackie Young who continues to rank among the best guards in the league.

Young, who is coming off her second straight WNBA All-Star selection capped off her best season of her young career while also helping the Aces win their second straight WNBA Championship. Young, who was the WNBA Most Improved Player last season, increased her production again during the 2023 WNBA season while posting 17.6 points per game over 40 games played.

Despite the loaded roster Young was able to continue to see improvement in her overall scoring game. In addition, the aces guard added four rebounds and 3.8 assists per game over the course of the basketball season.

7. Satou Sabally

Team: Dallas Wings

Previous Ranking: 6

Joining her Dallas Wings teammate Arike Ogunbowale on the list of the best WNBA players is Satou Sabally. Sabally who is from Freiburg, Germany was the former second overall selection during the 2020 WNBA Draft.

Since arriving in the league, Sabally has been selected to two WNBA All-Star teams while landing the 2023 WNBA Most Improved Player Award. Sabally, who is coming off finishing the 2023 WNBA Season ranked 59th in the league in scoring averaged 18.6 points per game over 38 games played during this past season while posting a career high in scoring.

In addition to her production on the offensive end of the floor, Sabally posted 8.1 rebounds per game while adding 4.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game this past season.

6. Arike Ogunbowale

Team: Dallas Wings

Previous Ranking: 8

One of four WNBA teams to finish with a winning record, the Dallas Wings are a dangerous team with a few key scoring threats including Arike Ogunbowale.

Ogunbowale is coming off a season in which she finished 5th in the league in scoring averaging 21.2 points per game while also being one of only five WNBA players to average at least 20 points per game.

The former Notre Dame Fighting Irish guard topped 20 plus points per game mark for the second time of her young WNBA career while also landing on her third straight WNBA All-Star team.

5. Nneka Ogwumike

Team: Los Angeles Sparks

Previous Ranking: 10

Rounding out the Top 5 WNBA Players landing on the Top 10 WNBA Players 2023-2024 Rankings list is the Los Angeles Sparks veteran Nneka Ogwumike. The former Stanford Cardinal forward continues to remain one of the league’s top scorers year in and year out.

Ogwumike, who was drafted number one overall during the 2012 WNBA Draft, has posted 12 straight seasons averaging at least 13 points per game including 19.1 points per game last season.

The Los Angeles Sparks forward is coming off her best season since 2016 after also adding 8.8 rebounds per game to go along with 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game last season. Her strong performance on the floor landed Ogwumike her eighth WNBA All-Star selection of her career as well as a spot on the All-WNBA Second team.

4. Napheesa Collier

Team: Minnesota Lynx

One of the up and coming young stars of the WNBA, Napheesa Collier has become a staple of the Minnesota Lynx roster and a household name of the WNBA despite being drafted just a few seasons back.

Collier, who was selected from the UConn Huskies by the Lynx back during the 2019 WNBA Draft, has made three WNBA All-Star teams as well as won the WNBA Rookie of the Season continues to develop year in and year out. Collier’s latest performance saw the Lynx star finish ranked 4th in the WNBA in scoring while averaging 21.5 points per game this past season.

The Lynx forward also added 8.5 rebounds per contest to go along with 2.5 assists. 1.6 steals, and 1.2 blocked shots per game. Her play did not stop there as Collier stepped up in the team’s three playoff games averaging nearly two points more per game (23.7).

3. Jewell Lloyd

Team: Seattle Storm

Previous Ranking: 3

The 2023 WNBA Season was a struggle for the Seattle Storm all season as the team looked to fill the void with the loss of Breanna Stewart. While the team struggled at times Jewell Lloyd put together a stellar season finishing with the WNBA lead in scoring after averaging 24.7 points per game.

The former Notre Dame Fighting Irish guard posted 22 games during the season scoring at least 25 points per game including 12 games with at least 30 points.

Lloyd also finished the season averaging 4.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and one steal per game while shooting 35.6 percent from behind the three point line. Lloyd will look to continue her production during the 2024 WNBA Season while leading the Storm back to the WNBA Playoffs.

2. Breanna Stewart

Team: New York Liberty

After an exciting off-season last season for the New York Liberty, the move to land Breanna Stewart nearly paid off as the dynamic forward played a key role in the success of the Liberty all season.

Stewart, who took home her second WNBA MVP award capped off the season averaging 23 points per game to go along with 9.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.6 blocked shots per game. Stewart is a tremendous two way player who can excel on both ends of the hardwood while also being a strong shot from outside the three point line.

As the winter months move on the excitement level will continue to build for the Liberty if Stewart elects to resign and the hunt for the 2024 WNBA Championship begins.

1. A’ja Wilson

Team: Las Vegas Aces

In at number one on the Top 10 Best WNBA Players 2023-2024 Rankings list is the Las Vegas Aces forward A’ja Wilson who slides in just above Breanna Stewart. Wilson set career highs across the board including averaging 22.8 points per game across all 40 games played. In addition to her ability to score, Wilson is as good a defender as any in the WNBA while posting 1.4 steals and 2.2 blocked shots per game.

In addition to her regular season success, Wilson shined during the WNBA postseason while helping the Aces take home their second straight championship while also landing herself her first WNBA Finals MVP Award of her young career.

During the postseason, Wilson posted six double doubles while averaging 23.8 points per game to go along with 11.8 rebounds. Wilson and the Aces will look to retool this off-season in route to a potential three peat.
