The Best WNBA Team Right Now

The 2024 WNBA Season is now going into the second half of the schedule as players are either taking a break or are competing in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. As you start to look at the current playoff picture and the overall strength of the WNBA, only five of the current 12 teams have posted a winning record with the New York Liberty leading the way with 21 total wins. The strong start to the 2024 WNBA season lands the Liberty atop the Top 10 Best WNBA Teams 2024 Rankings list while the Minnesota Lynx who recently won the Commissioners Cup and the Connecticut Sun battle for number two.

After spending big leading into last season and coming up just short within the WNBA Finals, the Liberty retained their core group of stars including Breanna Stewart. The move has paid off as the Liberty currently look like the team to beat while having one of the deeper rosters within the league. Currently seven different players are averaging at least 17 minutes per game while four different players are averaging at least 12.5 points per game.

Joining the Liberty among the best teams within the WNBA include the Connecticut Sun, Minnesota Lynx, Seattle Storm, and defending WNBA Champion Las Vegas Aces.

Here is a look at the Top 10 Best WNBA Teams 2024 Rankings:

Honorable Mention

Dallas Wings

The 2024 WNBA season has not gone well for the Dallas Wings as they continue to put wins up in the WNBA standings. Through their first half of the season the Wings are currently tied with Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics with only six wins to start the season.

In addition to just six wins, the Wings have struggled winning just three of their last ten games after starting the season with a 3-5 overall record. The team currently ranks first in the WNBA in points allowed while allowing 89.7 points per game while ranking seventh in the WNBA averaging 81.9 points per game.

Injuries have played a role in the struggles including having Natasha Howard play in just six of the teams first 18 games. On a positive note, four different players who have appeared in at least 10 games are currently averaging at least 10 points including Arike Ogunbowale who is averaging 22.3 points per game.

Los Angeles Sparks

Just missing the Top 10 WNBA Teams 2024 Rankings list is one of the three WNBA teams currently sitting with just six wins. That team is the Los Angeles Sparks who continue to have a challenging time rebuilding their roster while also battling through injuries including the loss of rookie star Cameron Brink who is out for the season.

While the team added multiple rookies to build for the future, the struggles have shown up all season including allowing the fourth most points per game (85.2) to start the season. On a bright spot Dearica Hamby has played exceptionally well all season long while rookie Rickea Jackson has been strong over her first half of the season and career.

Top 10 WNBA Teams 2024 Rankings

10. Atlanta Dream

Just sitting outside the playoff picture is the Atlanta Dream who have been in a slump recently winning just one of their last 10 games.

While the Dream has a solid roster including Alisha Gray and Rhyne Howard who are each averaging 15 plus points per game, the team’s struggles on the offensive end of the floor while averaging just 75.2 points per game has impacted the team’s overall success.

Despite allowing just 81.2 points per game, the Dream have won only one of their past 10 games to drop to 7-17 after starting the season 4-3.

9. Washington Mystics

Sliding in at number 10 on the Top 10 WNBA Teams 2024 Rankings list is the Washington Mystics. As the Mystics currently sit with both the Los Angeles Sparks and Dallas Wings with just six wins, the team has shown some bright light of late winning four of their past 10 games after starting the season losing nine straight games.

After a slew of off-season moves and the departure of Elena Delle Donne who elected to take a leave from the WNBA, the Mystics complete rebuild was set into action.

On a bright note, former first round pick during the 2018 WNBA Draft Ariel Atkins is averaging 14.4 points per game while veteran Stefanie Dolson is posting 10.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

8. Chicago Sky

The start of the future is off to a slow start for the Chicago Sky who added multiple generation talented stars during the 2024 WNBA Draft with Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardosa.

While the struggles have shown up from the start of the season, the positive performances of late from Reese including 15 straight double doubles that broke a record have Sky fans excited for the future.

Currently the Sky are allowing the fifth fewest number of points per game (81) while also sitting first in rebounds per game (36.8). Could the development of the team’s rookies show up during the second half as both have played well as of late?

7. Indiana Fever

After a slow start to the season, the Indiana Fever have bounced back from a 2-8 start, to going .500 in the past 10 while pushing their record to 11-15 on the season. As all eyes have been on the Fever all season, the success of rookie point guard Caitlin Clark has played a key role in the team’s positive step forward.

Along with Clark the Fever have three additional players averaging at least 11 points including Aliyah Boston who is averaging 14.2 points per game during her second season.

In addition, the Fever currently rank fourth in the WNBA while shooting 44.3 percent from the floor and third in the WNBA in assists per game (21.6).

6. Phoenix Mercury

The Phoenix Mercury have been an up and down team all season while going .500 in the last ten games to push their overall record to 13-12 on the season.

While the team has strong veterans leading the way including Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi along with key off-season acquisition Kahleah Copper, the team has struggled to slow down opposing teams at times.

Currently the Mercury are ranked fourth in scoring averaging 83.3 points per game, however the team ranks third in total points allowed while allowing 85.6 points. Despite their struggles, the Mercury have the talent to compete down the stretch and into the playoffs.

5. Seattle Storm

After a disappointing 2023 WNBA Season, the Seattle Storm entered the off-season looking to add firepower to their roster to compete for the WNBA Championship. The moves have paid off as the Storm have jumped out to a 17-8 record including winning eight of their past 10 games.

These moves included adding Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike to join Jewell Loyd to form one of the top trios within the WNBA. Currently the Storm sit fourth in the league in scoring averaging 84.1 points per game while dominating the glass as well as on the defensive end of the floor.

Currently the Storm rank second in the WNBA in rebounding (36.4), first in blocks (5.5) and first in steals per game (9.6).

4. Las Vegas Aces

Sitting outside the Top 3 on this list is the Las Vegas Aces who are looking to win their third straight WNBA Championship. While the struggles have shown up at times this season, it is hard to imagine the Aces not making a run down the stretch and during the 2024 WNBA Playoffs.

The Aces who currently lead the WNBA in scoring averaging 88.9 points per game have one of the most polished rosters within the league that features Kelsey Plum, A’ja Wilson, and Jackie Young.

With the strong core of experience during the regular season and the playoffs, the Aces are a team to watch down the stretch during the second half of the season.

3. Minnesota Lynx

After finishing with an 19-21 overall record last season, the Minnesota Lynx arrived as one of the most improved teams within the WNBA in route to being tied with the Connecticut Sun with a 14-4 record through the end of July.

However, the even more impressive success of the Lynx team this season came with the team’s 94-89 win over the New York Liberty to take home the 2024 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Championship.

The Lynx have a strong roster that features seven different players averaging at least 12 minutes per game while three players are currently averaging 12.1 points or more per game led by Napheesa Collier who is battling plantar fasciitis.

While the team has been strong offensively, the team’s defense that is currently allowing the second fewest number of points per game (75) has helped position the Lynx among the best teams in the WNBA.

2. Connecticut Sun

As you start to look around at the talented WNBA rosters and their performances to start the current 2024 WNBA season, it is hard to look past the Connecticut Sun who continue to sit around the top of the standings.

Like both the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty, the Sun have been stellar on the defensive end of the floor all season long while allowing the fewest number of points to start the season at just 72.5 points per game.

Headlining the team’s success is DeWanna Bonner who is currently averaging 17.1 points per game while Alyssa Thomas continues to add 11.2 points and 9.2 rebounds. In addition, with strong defensive success to start the season the Sun are committing the second fewest number of turnovers per game with 11.6 per game.

1. New York Liberty

In at number one on the Top 10 WNBA Teams 2024 Rankings list is the New York Liberty who entered the season as one of the top teams to compete for the WNBA Championship.

Through the first half of the season, the team has rolled to an impressive 21-4 record while winning nine of their last 10 games heading into the Olympic Break. On the season the Liberty currently rank second in the WNBA in scoring averaging 86 points while allowing the third fewest number of points per game (77).

The production does not stop there as the team currently ranks first in the league in field goals (44.9) and fourth in three-point percentages (34.5). Leading the production is reigning WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart who currently leads the team in scoring (19.3), rebounding (9), steals (2) and blocked shots (1.5) per game.
