Sonny Liston

Sonny Liston is one of the best heavyweights of all time, who is on many people’s list. He is a former Undisputed heavyweight world champion, and held the unified WBC, WBA, NYSAC, and The Ring heavyweight titles before losing them to Muhammad Ali. He is not in our rankings but deserves an honorable mention. 

Gene Tunny

Gene Tunny was also one of the best heavyweights of his time. He competed between 1915 and 1928, and became the Undisputed heavyweight champion of the world as well. 

Top 10 Heavyweight Boxers

10. Jack Dempsey

Jack Dempsey was an American boxer who competed from 1914 to 1927. He was one of the biggest boxing stars in the 20s and held the world heavyweight title from 1919 to 1926. Dempsey was the undisputed heavyweight champion and defended the title 3 times. 

Jack Dempsey is one of the inaugural members of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and is ranked number 10 by the Ring Magazine among the greatest heavyweights of all time. He retired with a boxing record of 64 wins 6 losses and 9 draws.

9. Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson, was the youngest heavyweight champion of the world, and he competed from 1985 to 2005

He was a two-time world heavyweight champion and held the unified WBA, WBC, IBF, and The Ring heavyweight titles. Tyson even made a comeback in 2020 at the age of 54 and looked incredible in an exhibition fight against Roy Jones Junior.

Iron Mike was also named Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year twice, in 1986 and 1988. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame with the class of 2011. Tyson retired with a record of 50 wins, 6 losses, and 2 no-contests.

8. Evander Holyfield

Evander Holyfield was an American boxer who competed between 1984 and 2011. He has won infield world titles in two weight classes. 

Starting his career at cruiserweight, Holyfield became the undisputed champion, holding the  WBA, WBC, and IBF cruiserweight titles simultaneously. Holyfield is the only boxer to hold undisputed titles in two weight classes and became the undisputed heavyweight champion in 1990. 

Holyfield retired with a boxing record of  44 wins, 10 losses, 2 draws, and 1 no contest.

7. Joe Fraizer

Frazier was an American boxer, who competed during arguably the best generation of heavyweight boxers between 1965 and 1981. 

Frazier was the unified WBA and WBC heavyweight champion, and the first man to defeat the great Muhammad Ali. Fraizer is a 3x Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame with the inaugural class in 1990. 

Frazier passed away in 2011, at the age of 67. He retired in 1981 with a boxing record of  32 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw.

6. George Foreman

Before becoming a successful entrepreneur, “Big George” competed as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time. He for almost 28 years between 1967 and 1997

George Foreman was a 2-time heavyweight champion. He was the unified WBA, WBC, and The Ring heavyweight champion, and defended the titles twice before losing them to Muhammad Ali, in one of the biggest fights of his career. Foreman also became the oldest heavyweight champion, winning the title again at the age of 45

He retired with a boxing record of 76 wins, 5 losses.

5. Larry Holmes

Larry Holmes was an American boxer who competed between 1973 to 2002. 

Holmes was the WBC heavyweight champion and he defended the title 8 times before fighting Muhammad Ali when he came out of retirement winning the fight via Corner stoppage. Holmes also held the IBF and The Ring heavyweight titles.  

Larry Holmes retired with a record of 69 wins and 6 losses, He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008.

4. Rocky Marciano

Rocky Marciano is a former American boxer, who competed as a heavyweight from 1947 to 1955. He was a very exciting boxer and still holds the longest undefeated record in boxing. 

Marciano was the unified  NBA, NYSAC, The Ring, and lineal heavyweight champion, defending the titles a total of six times before retiring as the champion. Marciano also has one of the highest Knockout rates in boxing history, with 43 knockout wins in his career. 

Rocky Marciano retired with a record of 49 wins and 0 losses. He passed away in 1969 at the age of 45 and was inducted into the International Boxing hall of fame with the inaugural class of 1990.

3. Lenox Lewis

At number 3, we have Lenox Lewis, one of the most popular boxers of the 90s. He competed in the heavyweight division between 1989 and 2003

The British boxer is a 3-time heavyweight world champion and held the lineal championship as well. At the peak of his career, he also became the undisputed heavyweight champion, simultaneously holding the WBA, WBC, IBF, and IBO heavyweight titles. 

He was named “Fighter of the Year” by the Boxing Writers Association of America in 1999. Lewis retired with a record of 41 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2009.

2. Joe Louis

Joe Louis was an American boxer who competed between 1934 and 1951. Lois still holds the record for the longest title reign in the heavyweight division. 

He became the unified NBA, NYSAC, and The Ring heavyweight champion, and defended the title 25 times. He was named ring magazine fighter of the year four times and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame with the Inaugural class of 1990. 

He retired with a record of 66 wins and 3 losses. Joe Louis passed away in 1981 at the age of 66.

1. Muhammad Ali

At number one, Muhammad Ali is the greatest boxer of all time, and the greatest heavyweight as well. Ali competed between 1960 and 1981, and he was the biggest boxing superstar of his time. 

He was a three-time heavyweight world champion and held the undisputed heavyweight title twice. To this day, he remains the only 3x lineal heavyweight champion of the world. Ali also had a very charismatic personality outside the ring. 

He was named Ring magazine fighter of the year 6 times and was inducted into the international boxing hall of fame in 1990. Ali ended his career with a record of 56 wins and 5 losses. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 74.
