In the Asian part of the world football is a very popular sport, but there isn’t any remarkable success on the international scene from these national teams.

The last dilemma in the Asian qualifications for the World Cup in Qatar has been resolved. Australia’s rival in the playoffs will be the selection of the United Arab Emirates, which beat South Korea 1: 0 and thus won third place in its qualifying group!

Honorable Mention

Uzbekistan 

Uzbekistan is the 83rd national team on the FIFA ranking and never was part of World Cups and although they were participating in every AFC Asian Cup so far they haven’t won it yet, with the best result being finishing 4th in 2011.

Top 10 Asian Football Teams

10. China

China, although is investing a lot in domestic leagues and clubs, their national team is far from good. They are ranked 77th on FIFA list without any big success yet, with only one World Cup played in 2002.

9. Oman

The west asia country of Oman was close to make a sensation and finish in 3rd place but they improved their form a bit too late. Oman is currently 75th on the FIFA ranking and haven’t recorded some success in the competitions yet.

8. Iraq

Iraq, 72nd county on FIFA ranking is yet another county from Asian Zone that has World Cup experience, they played in Mexico in 1986. They have also won 1 AFC Asian Cup title in 2007.

7. United Arab Emirates

UAE is ranked 68th on the FIFA list, but surprisingly they have already one World cup experience, they played in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

6. Qatar

For 51st county on FIFA Ranking, Qatar next World Cup will be their first. Of course, they are in it automatically as hosts. They haven’t made any international or continental success yet, so this is maybe their best chance on home ground.

5. Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is ranked as 49th on FIFA rank and is considered as one of the best Asian national football teams. They have won AFC Asian cup 3 times and were part of World Cups 6 times and will play in the next one in Qatar.

4. Australia 

Australia is the only country that has won in 2 Confederation zones, in Oceania 4 times and in Asia 1. They are currently on the 42nd place on FIFA Ranking.

3. South Korea

As it was expected, South Korea didn’t have any problems to finish in 2nd place in the group stage which leads directly to the World Cup. South Korea is on the 29th place on FIFA Ranking. They are the most successful Asian country in the World Cup, finishing in 4th place at the 2002 World Cup which they hosted together with Japan.

2. Japan

Japan is ranked 23rd place on FIFA Ranking and is the 2nd best team from Asian zone. Football is becoming more popular in Japan in the past several years and it is noticed from the successes of the national team. They were participants in the last 7 World Cups in a row and won the AFC Asian Cup 4 times.

1. Iran

Many will be surprised that Iran is the best placed national team on FIFA ranking in 21st place. Iran will be part of the next World Cup in Qatar as they without any problem finished 1st in group stage A with 25 points, 8 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. Iran has won Asian Cup 3 times and was a participant in the World Cup 6 times including the next in Qatar.
