The history of Major League Baseball is fielded with a long list of storied first baseman. A position that has been known for power, continues to thrive year in and year out. The same position that has produced many great Hall of Famers from Jimmie Fox to Lou Gehrig to Harmon Killebrew to Stan Musial to Jeff Bagwell to Eddie Murray. In addition, the game has been blessed to see the likes of future Hall of Famers Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols cover the position over the past 10 MLB seasons.

Now a new list of talented first baseman man positions led by 2021 MLB All-Star Game MVP Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Along with Guerrero Jr, other Top 10 MLB First Basemen include Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves, Matt Olson from the Oakland A’s and Pete Alonso from the New York Mets to name just a few. Here is our complete list of the Top 10 MLB First Basemen in 2021.

Top 10 First Baseman

  1. Trey Mancini

Team: Baltimore Orioles

One of the biggest headliners of the 2021 MLB season is the Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini. Mancini who missed all of the 2020 MLB shortened season due to cancer, has responded nicely in his return this season including finishing runner up to Pete Alonso at the 2021 MLB All-Star home run derby. Mancini is batting .256 with 16 home runs and 55 runs batting as the team entered the All-Star break. Mancini who has been one of the more consistent players on the Orioles lineup had put together a stellar 2019 season finishing with 35 home runs and 97 runs batted in.

  1. Rhys Hoskins

Team: Philadelphia Phillies

A name that might not be talked about much is the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins, who hit 18 home runs in just 50 games as a rookie followed that campaign up with 34 and 29 home runs before hitting 10 in just 41 games last season. Hoskins plays a very solid defensive first base while also being one of the games top power hitting first baseman. Through his first 87 games this season, Hoskins has 22 doubles to go along with 20 home runs and 55 runs batted in.

  1. Jared Walsh

Team: Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels first baseman is slowly moving up the rankings among the MLB Top 10 First Baseman rankings this season after putting together a terrific first half of the 2021 MLB season. Walsh through 324 at bats this season is batting .278 with 22 home runs to go along with 65 runs batted in. The former 2015 MLB draft pick is playing in his first full season after seeing 31 games as a rookie in 2019 and 32 last season.

  1. Pete Alonso

Team: New York Mets

Pete Alonso just landed his name on a short list of stars who won back to back home run derby crowns. While those home runs don’t count, Alonso hasn’t let anyone down during the regular season since making his debut as a rookie in 2019. Alonso smashed 53 home runs while driving in 120 runs en route to the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year Award as well as leading all MLB hitters in home runs while also making the All-Star team. The 53 home runs were the most by a rookie in a single season and the first Met to hit at least 50 home runs. As Alonso has struggled at the plate at times this season he still has 17 home runs and 49 runs batted in. Alonso had shown signs of putting it together, hitting six home runs and driving in 14 runs over his last 15 games prior to the All-Star break.

  1. Jose Abreu

Team: Chicago White Sox

Despite being the oldest MLB player on this list, Jose Abreu is still one of the best first baseman in the game. Abreu, who arrived with the Chicago White Sox in 2014, has put together four seasons with at least 30 home runs, two additional seasons with at least 22 and nearly reached 20 last season (19) in just 60 games. Abreu has continued his surge this season picking up 14 doubles, 15 home runs and 66 runs batted in over the course of the first 83 games of the season.

  1. Paul Goldschmidt

Team: St. Louis Cardinals

Another veteran that joins the list is the former Arizona Diamondbacks star and current St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt who has been near the top of the list as one of the best first baseman in MLB continues to put together solid seasons year in and year out. The same has been said this season as he has posted a .265 batting average over his first 88 games of the season while picking up 15 doubles, 13 home runs and 49 runs batted in. Prior to the shortened MLB COVID season in 2019, Goldschmidt had hit at least 33 home runs in three straight seasons and four of the five previous seasons.

  1. Max Muncy

Team: Los Angeles Dodgers

A key piece of a very good Los Angeles Dodgers team, Max Muncy has quietly put together a few solid seasons for the Dodgers now seeing regular time at first base. Between 2018 and 2019, Muncy hit 70 home runs to go with 178 runs batted in and 39 doubles. This season, Muncy has continued that success batting .270 over his first 256 at bats while picking up 15 doubles, 19 home runs and 52 runs batted in while scoring 54 total runs. In addition, Muncy has posted 58 walks to just 57 strikeouts while posting a career high .414 on base percentage to start the season.

  1. Matt Olson

Team: Oakland A’s

Everyone should be all in on Matt Olson as he continues to be one of the premier first baseman’s in all of baseball. Olson is batting .282 over his first 312 at bats this season while hitting 23 home runs and driving in 59 runs batted in. Over his last 30 games, Olson is batting .297 with eight home runs to go along with 19 runs batted in and 16 walks. Since breaking out in 59 games as a rookie in 2017 hitting 24 home runs, Olson has posted 29, 36 and 14 home runs (shortened season) for the Oakland A’s. Olson is a key piece to the success of the A’s while continuing to play himself into the top ten list.

  1. Freddie Freeman

Team: Atlanta Braves

Coming in just behind our number one pick is the Atlanta Braves All-Star Freddie Freeman. Freeman who is 31 now, has been one of the games top first baseman if not the best. The Braves first baseman is as good as any player in the league and is one of the top defensive first baseman in the game. Since arriving in 2010, Freeman has hit 259 home runs to go with 356 doubles and 907 runs batted in. This season, Freeman is batting .274 with 14 doubles, 58 runs scored, 19 home runs and 50 runs driven in.

  1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr

Team: Toronto Blue Jays

It is hard not to put Vladimir Guerrero Jr at the top of the list of the Top 10 MLB First Baseman. The Toronto Blue Jays 22 year old All-Star is taking the game by storm this season as he is leading all first baseman in batting average (.332), home runs (28) and runs batted in (73). As a rookie, Guerrero Jr, posted 15 home runs and 69 runs driven in as a rookie during the 2019 MLB season. In addition to his other numbers this season, Guerrero Jr has posted a .430 on base percentage, .658 slugging percentage and a 1.089 OPS mark through his first 87 at bats. The success doesn’t stop there as he took home his first All-Star MVP award after smashing a long home run during the 2021 MLB All-Star game. Look for Guerrero Jr to be at the top of this list for many years to come.
