The game of baseball is loaded with a long list of talented players including at the first base position during the 2023 Major League Baseball season. Over the years some of the games biggest power hitting players have anchored down the position while the same can be said for the 2023 MLB schedule. 

As you start to look at the Top 10 MLB First Baseman 2023 Rankings list, the list is loaded with talent with both young faces of the game as well as multiple veterans including Paul Goldschmidt of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Goldschmidt who is coming off his first MVP Award last season as well as being selected for his 7th MLB All-Star team continues to rank among the best hitters in baseball as well as one of the best defensive first baseman’s in 2023.

As Goldschmidt headlines the list of the best MLB first baseman’s, he is only one of a strong group of players anchoring down first base for their respective teams during the 2023 MLB season.

Other first baseman’s joining him on the Top 10 list includes Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Yandy Diaz of the Tampa Bay Rays, Vladimir Guerrero Jr of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Pete Alonso of the New York Mets. Here is a look at the Top 10 MLB Best First Baseman 2023 Rankings list.

Honorable Mention

Andrew Vaughn

Team: Chicago White Sox

Landing just outside of the Top 10 MLB First Baseman 2023 Rankings list is the Chicago White Sox first baseman Andrew Vaughn.

Vaugh who just turned 25 years old is in the midst of his third season in the Majors for the White Sox after being drafted by the White Sox with the 3rd pick of the 2019 MLB Season.

In 189 at bats in 2023 Vaugh is currently hitting .233 on the year with 13 doubles, one triple, five home runs while driving in 31 runs. Currently Vaugh is tied for 6th among first baseman in doubles and tied for 8th in runs batted in.

Rowdy Tellez

Team: Milwaukee Brewers

Entering MLB action during Memorial Day Weekend, Rowdy Tellez of the Milwaukee Brewers is currently ranked 3rd in baseball with 12 home runs over his first 46 games of the season.

In addition to ranking among the top three in home runs, Tellez has picked up four doubles and 26 runs to start the season to go along with a .259 batting average over his first 147 at bats of the season.

Tellez has also added a .531 slugging percentage and a .878 OPS for a Brewers team looking to compete within the NL Central division.

Top 10 First Basemen

10. Christian Walker

Team: Arizona Diamondbacks

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 MLB First Baseman 2023 Rankings list is the Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker. A former top prospect within the Orioles farm system has blossomed into one of the top hitters and fielders playing the first base position during the 2023 MLB season.

Coming off a career high 36 home last season, Walker has hit 11 home runs over 177 at bats to start the 2023 MLB season. The numbers don’t stop there for Walker as he has also added 10 doubles, scored 28 runs, posted an .805 OPS, and drove in 34 runs. In addition, Walker has continued to play Gold Glove defense at the position after winning his first Gold Glove Award in 2022.

9. Ryan Mountcastle

Team: Baltimore Orioles

As you look around Major League Baseball it is nearly impossible not to stop and look at the play of the Baltimore Orioles through the first two months of the season.

As the Orioles look to contend within the American League East division, one player doing his part to help the team is first baseman Ryan Mountcastle.

Mountcastle, who has been the teams first baseman since the 2021 MLB season, is off to another strong start this season. The Orioles first baseman is currently hitting .239 with 11 doubles, 11 home runs and driving in 36 while sitting tied for 11th in all of baseball in runs batted in. 

8. Alec Bohm

Team: Philadelphia Phillies

Another young MLB star anchoring down first base is the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Alec Bohm. Bohm, who will turn 27 years old in August, is currently batting .269 on the season with six home runs while sitting tied for 2nd among all first baseman with 37 runs batted in.

The Phillies first baseman has also added 50 total hits, 23 runs scored, six home runs, while holding a .269 batting average over his first 186 at bats of the season. While the Phillies have struggled at times this season Bohm continues too hit among the best players in baseball.

7. Anthony Rizzo

Team: New York Yankees

The New York Yankees continue to rank among the best teams in baseball while having one of the best rosters on paper. One player who ranks among the Yankees best players as well as among the best first baseman’s in baseball is Anthony Rizzo.

Rizzo enters the last weekend of May ranked 4th in all of baseball with 11 home runs while also posting eight doubles, 30 runs batted in, and a .301 batting average.

Rizzo’s batting average currently ranks 3rd in Major League Baseball trailing only Freddie Freeman and Yandi Diaz at the first base position.

6. Matt Olson

Team: Atlanta Braves

Coming off what was possibly his best season in Major League Baseball after hitting a career high 39 home runs, Matt Olson is off to a hot start for the Atlanta Braves in 2023.

The Braves first baseman has played in 50 games this season while posting 187 at bats over that stretch while playing solid in the field as well as the plate.

In those 187 at bats, Olson has posted 44 hits including 10 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs and 37 runs batted in while posting a .524 slugging percentage.

5. Yandy Diaz

Team: Tampa Bay Rays

Rounding out the top five on the Top 10 MLB First Baseman 2023 Rankings list is the Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz.

Through the first two months of the season the Rays have been the best team in baseball while having a long list of players ranking among the best within their position. Diaz is one of those players as he continues to perform aligned with other top first baseman.

The Rays first baseman is currently tied for 4th in home runs with 11 and second in batting average with a .322 mark among all first baseman.

To go with those numbers Diaz has played strong defense for the Rays while also adding nine doubles, 35 runs scored, and 27 runs batted in.

4. Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Team: Toronto Blue Jays

As you look for physical traits of a great first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr of the Toronto Blue Jays has many of them. The Blue Jays first baseman who is coming off winning the Gold Glove for the American League last season can play the field and hit with the best players in the game. 

Since arriving in the Majors, Guerrero Jr has made two MLB All-Star teams, won multiple awards including the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger while also leading all of MLB in home runs back in 2021. Currently Guerrero Jr is batting .298 on the year with 12 doubles, eight home runs, 34 runs batted in, and an .856 OPS mark.

3. Pete Alonso

Team: New York Mets

The New York Mets power hitting first baseman continues to showcase his talents in 2023 as he currently leads not only first baseman in home runs but all MLB players with 19 home runs. 

Alonso, who led all of Major League Baseball back in 2019 in home runs, is on pace to repeat his success in 2023. In addition to home runs, Alonso currently ranks tied for 3rd in baseball with 45 runs batted in while leading all first baseman.

To go along with those numbers Alonso has also added three doubles, 35 runs scored, and an .900 OPS through his first 51 games of the 2023 MLB season.

2. Freddie Freeman

Team: Los Angeles Dodgers

When it came to the best first baseman in Major League Baseball in 2023 the debate could be made for not only Paul Goldschmidt but for Freddie Freeman and Pete Alonso.

Unfortunately, only one first baseman can take home the top spot with Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers sliding in at number two.

The Dodgers first baseman currently leads all first baseman with enough qualified at bats with a .325 batting average as well as leading the group in doubles with 18, total bases with 113, and Wins Above Replacement with a 2.2 mark.

1. Paul Goldschmidt

Team: St. Louis Cardinals

In at number one on the Top 10 MLB First Baseman 2023 Rankings list is the St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

Goldschmidt has been one of the faces of Major League Baseball since his earliest days in the league with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Goldy continues to live up to that hype as he has posted a .292 batting average in 192 at bats to start the 2023 MLB season.

Over those 192 at bats, Goldschmidt has picked up 16 doubles, nine home runs, scored 36 runs, and driven in 33 runs while posting a .401 on base percentage mark. On top of that the Cardinals first baseman continues to rank among the best fielding first baseman in all of Major League Baseball.
