The 2024 MLB schedule continues to steamroll towards the final few months of the season as both players and teams make a push to compete for a spot to play baseball in October. One position that continues to see players put together strong seasons while having a direct impact on their respective team’s success this season is with the MLB starting pitchers. As you start to look around the game many top tier starting pitchers are putting together strong resumes in hopes of landing either the AL CY Young Award or NL CY Young Award while others are helping their teams remain alive within the playoff picture. One of those pitchers is Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers who lands atop the Top 10 Best MLB Pitchers 2024 Rankings list.

The 27-year-old Tigers starting pitcher has been brilliant all season long for the Tigers while pitching to a 12-3 overall record. In addition to ranking second among Major League Baseball in wins, Skubal has also pitched to a league leading 2.35 earned run average among starters who have made at least 20 starts to the season.

As Skubal continues to dominate during each start, other top MLB starting pitchers joining him on the list of the best in the game includes Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles, Seth Lugo of the Kansas City Royals, Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves, and Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Here is a look at the Top 10 Best MLB Pitchers 2024 Rankings.

Honorable Mention

Brady Singer

Team: Kansas City Royals

Just missing the Top 10 MLB Pitchers 2024 Rankings list is the Kansas City Royals 27 year older starter Brady Singer. Singer, who has been an anchor within the Royals rotation since the 2021 season has made at least 22 starts in each of the last four seasons including 22 to start the 2024 MLB schedule.

Despite posting just an 8-6 overall record, Singer has pitched better than his record has indicated while dominating with an 2.88 earned run average over his first 125 innings of work this season.

To go along with the innings, Singer has posted a 1.16 WHIP while striking out 115 total hitters while pitching to a 3.0 WAR. Singer along with fellow top tier starter Seth Lugo has helped the Royals transition into one of the top teams in the American League.

Grayson Rodriguez

Team: Baltimore Orioles

Despite allowing three earned runs in his last outing and a rough six run outing against the New York Yankees, Grayson Rodriguez has been as good as any starter in baseball over the course of the season while also benefiting from one of the top offenses in all of baseball.

Through 20 starts this season Rodriguez has posted a 13-4 overall record while pitching to a 3.86 earned run average. Overall on the year the Orioles have been really good in his outings picking up 14 total wins in 20 overall contests.

To go along with that success Rodriguez has struck out 130 batters while allowing two or fewer outings in 14 of his total starts. Anchored behind Corbin Burnes, Rodriguez and Burnes have formed one of the top 1-2 combinations in all of baseball.

Top 10 MLB Pitchers 2024 Rankings

10. Ranger Suarez

Team: Philadelphia Phillies

Sliding in at number 10 on the Top 10 MLB Pitchers 2024 Rankings list is the second of two Philadelphia Phillies starting pitchers, Ranger Suarez.

The 28 year old starting pitcher who is coming off his first MLB All-Star selection is putting together his best overall season in the Majors tying his career high in wins with 10 over just 20 starts to the season while also pitching to a 2.87 earned run average.

After winning just 14 games over 51 starts between the 2022 and 2023 MLB seasons, the Phillies starter is on pace to pass that mark this season while helping the first place Phillies to make a run within the National League.

9. Hunter Greene

Team: Cincinnati Reds

One of the most dominating pitchers in all of baseball this season has been the Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene. Greene who has been known for triple digit velocity has continued that success this season while also developing additional control helping to improve his all around pitching performance.

The Reds starting pitcher who is one of 14 starting pitchers to average at least 10 strikeouts per nine innings this season has posted 138 total strikeouts in 124.1 innings of work.

To go along with the strong strikeout out success, Greene has posted a 1.05 WHIP mark while pitching to a 2.97 earned run average and a 7-4 overall record. As the young rebuilding Reds continue to make strides the future looks bright for the young starting pitcher Greene.

8. Tanner Houck

Team: Boston Red Sox

After a slow start to the season the Boston Red Sox enter August as a team to watch in the American League and a team to make a run at one of the AL Playoff positions including a Wild Card spot.

One of the team’s players putting together a strong season has been starting pitcher Tanner Houck who currently sits fifth among MLB starters with a 2.79 earned run average while posting an 8-7 record.

While the 8-7 record is not as impressive as some of the games top starters, much of his struggles have come due to the team’s struggles this season. Over 110 innings of work this season, Houck has posted 116 strikeouts while averaging 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

7. Zach Wheeler

Team: Philadelphia Phillies

It is hard to look past the Philadelphia Phillies as a team to beat within the National League after the Phillies hot start and a MLB leading 65 wins through the end of July.

One player who has helped the team to the hot start has been starting pitcher Zach Wheeler who returned to the team after signing a new deal during the off-season. Through 21 starts, Wheeler has pitched to a 2.94 earned run average over 128.2 innings of work while posting a 10-5 overall record.

Currently the Phillies starter is tied for 10th among MLB starters in wins while also sitting eight in overall earned run average. Wheeler alongside Ranger Suarez has delivered the Phillies one of the best starting pitching tandems in all of baseball.

6. Reynaldo Lopez

Team: Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves have one of the best pitching rotations in all of baseball with Reynaldo Lopez being one of those starters. Lopez, who has only made 30 starts in two of his previous 11 MLB seasons was on pace to accomplish the feat this season before dealing with some arm injuries.

Nonetheless it is hard to look past the success Lopez has had over his first 19 stats of the season including pitching to an astonishing 2.06 earned run average over 104.2 innings of work while posting a 7-4 record and a 3.7 WAR.

Lopez alongside Chris Sale has delivered the Braves a rotation to make another run at the World Series. The 30 year old veteran is currently listed day to day after dealing with a forearm injury that could shut him down for the season.

5. Paul Skenes

Team: Pittsburgh Pirates

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 MLB Pitchers 2024 Rankings is the Pittsburgh Pirates rookie starting pitcher Paul Skenes. The former LSU Tigers starter has been one of the best stories in all of baseball after being the number one overall pick last season to starting the 2024 MLB All-Star game for the National League roster.

While Skenes has only 13 starts on the season, it is hard to look past the success the 22 year old starter has had including picking up six straight wins to start his career before picking up his first loss.

Overall the Pirates starter has pitched to a 1.90 earned run average to go along with the 1.90 earned run average, a 0.90 WHIP and 103 strikeouts in just 80.2 innings of work this season. In addition Skenes has been removed from multiple no hit bids that have reached the sixth inning due to workload and pitch count during his rookie season.

4. Seth Lugo

Team: Kansas City Royals

As you start to look around at the bright spots of the 2024 MLB season it is hard to look past the success Seth Lugo of the Kansas City Royals has had in his first season with the team.

The 34 year old starter who made 26 starts last season for the San Diego Padres has been brilliant for the upcoming Royals who currently sit with a 60-49 record on the season. After spending most of his career as a receiver, Lugo has made 22 starts this season for the Royals pitching to a 12-5 record while posting a 2.66 earned run average along with a 1.04 WHIP.

As the Royals look to make a run at the playoffs, the team will continue to rely on the veteran starter to put up strong numbers in a crowded American League Central division.

3. Chris Sale

Team: Atlanta Braves

After battling injuries over the past few MLB seasons limiting him to just 31 games over the three previous MLB seasons, Chris Sale is off to another stellar start picking up 13 wins over his first 20 games of the season.

Sale, who the Atlanta Braves acquired during the off-season has put together a strong MLB season while also pitching to a 2.71 earned run average to go along with a .95 WHIP.

While not as dominant of a strikeout pitcher as he was during his early part of his career, Sale has also notched 155 strikeouts to go along with a 3.6 WAR mark. Through 20 starts this season, Sale is tied for the MLB lead in wins (13), while also leading all NL starters in earned run average.

2. Corbin Burnes

Team: Baltimore Orioles

Another AL starting pitcher making a strong case to take home the 2024 AL CY Young Award is the Baltimore Orioles starter Corbin Burnes.

Burnes, who took home the 2021 NL CY Young Award, was acquired by the Orioles during the off-season in a key trade that has delivered the first place Orioles one of the best starters in all of baseball. Burnes, who has posted four straight All-Star selections, currently sits tied for fifth among starters with 11 wins while pitching to an overall 11-4 record.

As the Orioles continue to hold the lead in the AL East, Burnes has also pitched to the second best earned run average (2.47) in baseball while also posting a 1.04 WHIP and 128 total strikeouts.

1. Tarik Skubal

Team: Detroit Tigers

In atop the list of the best starting pitchers in baseball is Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers who currently sits atop Top 10 MLB Pitchers 2024 Rankings list.

Skubal, who was the hot name on the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline rumors, remained with the Tigers despite his dominant start during the 2024 MLB season in pursuit of his first AL CY Young Award.

Through the end of July, the Tigers starter currently leads all pitchers with a 2.35 earned run average over his first 21 starts while also ranking second in WHIP (0.92) among all starters. Overall Skubal has posted a 12-3 record while posting 154 strikeouts and a league best 5.2 WAR mark.
