Top 10 NBA Point Guards 2022 Rankings

Ranking the best Point Guards of the 2021-2022 NBA season as Luka Doncic leads the way. Also where Stephen Curry, Ja Morant, Chris Paul and more rank

The final week of the 2021-22 NBA Schedule has arrived as the regular season wraps up on Sunday April 10th, 2022. As the final few games of the regular season wrap up for each time around the National Basketball Association and teams make a final push for the playoffs, the time to reflect on who were the Top 10 NBA Point Guards in 2021-2022. A list that could include some of the game’s top veterans as well as some of the fresh faces who make up the next wave of the future.

The veterans landing on the list include long time star Chris Paul who continues to play at a high level as well as Stephen Curry. Meanwhile the fresh faces at the point guard position includes the likes of Luka Doncic, Trae Young and Ja Morant to name a few. 

Doncic and Young were both drafted during the 1st round of the 2018 NBA draft while also being traded for one another in a draft day trade. Meanwhile Morant continues to shine for the Memphis Grizzlies after being drafted during the 2019 NBA Draft.

With that said, here is our list of the Top 10 NBA Point Guards in 2021-2022:

Honorable Mention

Tyler Herro

Team: Miami Heat 

One name that consistently gets overlooked as one of the top point guards around the NBA is the Miami Heat young star Tyler Herr who the team drafted during the 2019 NBA Draft from the Kentucky Wildcats. 

Since arriving, the former Wildcats star has improved each year including posting career high in points per game (20.6 ppg), assists (3.9 apg) and rebounds (5.0 rpg) in just his third season. 

Herro currently ranks 24th in scoring in the NBA while ranking 9th among point guards in points per game and rebounds per game. 

Russell Westbrook

Team: Los Angeles Lakers

While the Los Angeles Lakers All-Star point guard has been front and center all season as his play has struggled while failing to mesh with the Lakers current roster, Russell Westbrook is still a tremendous point guard who can do it all while ranking near the top of the group in scoring, rebounds, and assists. 

Westbrook currently ranks 9th in the NBA in assists per game among all point guards, a key statistic that indicates his ability to be a playmaker while getting his teammates involved in the game. The Lakers point guard is averaging 18.4 points per game to go along with 7.5 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game.

10. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Team: Oklahoma City Thunder

The point guard position is one that is loaded with talent from top to bottom while the overall style of the position continues to evolve. 

One of those options at the point guard position is the Oklahoma City Thunder fourth year star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. 

Gilgeous-Alexander is putting together another strong season averaging a career high 24.5 points per game to go along with a career high 5.9 assists. The Thunder point guard ranks 15th in the NBA in scoring and 19th in the NBA in assists while also ranking 28th (21.0) in Player Efficiency Rating.

9. LaMelo Ball

Team: Charlotte Hornets 

It’s hard not to like LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets as a basketball player. Ball has showcased since being drafted 3rd overall during the 2020 NBA Draft, he has the talent and playmaking abilities to be a top point guard at the NBA level. 

After missing most of the second half of the 2020-21 NBA season, Ball has rebounded in 2021-22 posting 19.9 points per game to go along with 6.7 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game. 

The Hornets point guard ranks within the Top 10 among all point guards in points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game.

8. De’Aaron Fox

Team: Sacramento Kings

The Kentucky Wildcats trend continues with the point guard position as the former 5th overall pick De’Aaron Fox ranks 17th among all scorers in the NBA this season averaging 23.2 points per game while also ranking 23rd among all players in the NBA in assists with 5.6 assists per game. 

Among all point guards, the Kings point guard ranks 6th in scoring and 7th in field goal percentage (47.3%). Fox has put together three straight strong seasons averaging at least 21 points in each season to go along with at least 5.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists. 

7. Darius Garland

Team: Cleveland Cavaliers

One of the breakout stars among all players around the NBA is the Cleveland Cavaliers 2019 5th overall draft pick Darius Garland. 

With the exceptional play of Garland, the Cavaliers have been in the playoff picture for most of the season while currently holding on to one of the four play in playoff spots. Garland is currently putting together his best season since being drafted in 2019. 

The Cavaliers point guard is averaging career highs in points (21.6 ppg), rebounds (2.7 rpg) and assists (8.6 apg). Entering the final week of the NBA regular season, Garland ranks 7th in scoring among point guards while also ranking 5th in assists per game. 

6. Chris Paul

Team: Phoenix Suns

The aging wise veteran Chris Paul continues to play at a high-level despite being one of the oldest players at the position within the NBA. 

Paul, who was drafted 4th overall back during the 2005 NBA Draft, currently ranks 1st among all players in the NBA while averaging 10.7 assists per game. 

In addition to the assists, Paul is averaging 14.9 points per game and 4.3 rebounds while helping the Suns to the best record in all the NBA.

5. Dejounte Murray

Team: San Antonio Spurs

Coming in at number five on the Top 10 NBA Point Guards in 2021-22 is the San Antonio Spurs floor leader Dejounte Murray. 

Murray, who is often overlooked compared to top names such as Luka Doncic, Trae Young and Stephen Curry is just as good as any point guard in the NBA while delivering a different dynamic then the prototypical point guard. 

As Murray ranks 3rd among all point guards in assists per game with 9.3 per contests, Murray also averages the second most rebounds per game (8.4 rpg) while also averaging over 21 points a game (21.2 ppg). On the defensive side of the floor Murray is one of the top defenders at the point guard while taking home All-Defensive Second Team honors.

4. Ja Morant

Team: Memphis Grizzlies

As you roll into the Top 4 Point Guards in the NBA, the debate could be made for each of them to land at the top spot. In the end, the Memphis Grizzlies point guard lands at number four while his overall stock continues to rise in each contest he takes to the hardwood. 

Morant is a highly aggressive and energetic point guard who can take it to the rank at any time while posting high flying dunks for fans to amaze at. In 2021-22, Morant took his talent to another level while ranking 3rd among all point guards in scoring (27.6 ppg), 5th in rebounds (5.7 rpg) and 12th in assists (6.7 apg). 

Morant, who will end the season missing games due to a knee injury, played his way into MVP consideration while making the Grizzlies an NBA title contender.

3. Stephen Curry

Team: Golden State Warriors 

A healthy Stephen Curry would be possible at the top of this list, unfortunately the Golden State Warriors All-Star has battled injuries over the past few seasons which has limited his total production. 

Despite the injuries, Curry is still as dynamic as any player in the league while also being one of the greatest three-point threats of All-Time and a threat to take a three anywhere past the half court line. 

During a game on December 14th, 2021, Curry passed Ray Allen to become the NBA All-Time leader in three-point shots made. The aging veteran is averaging 25.5 points per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game.

2. Trae Young

Team: Atlanta Hawks

These top two options on the Top 10 NBA Point Guards in 2021-2022 rankings list were drafted in the same year, traded for each other in the same year and now are dead locked on Tuesday April 5th, 2022, in scoring while leading all point guards in scoring. 

One of those options is the Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young who is averaging 28.3 points per game this season while shooting 38.3 percent from three-point territory and 45.9 percent from the field. 

In addition to scoring, Young is averaging 3.8 rebounds per game and the second most assists in the NBA at 9.6 assists per game.

1. Luka Doncic

Team: Dallas Mavericks

Coming in as the NBA’s Top Point Guard is the Dallas Mavericks star and potential NBA MVP candidate Luka Doncic. Doncic who is not the size of the older point guard type but plays the game as well as any sized point guard to play the position. 

The Maverick’s star is a play making guard who can take it to the rack or dish out a no-look pass to set up a teammate. Entering the final week of the regular season, Doncic ranks 4th in the NBA in scoring averaging 28.3 points per game along with Trae Young while also ranking 20th in the NBA in rebounds (9.1 rpg) and 5th in the NBA in assists (8.7 apg). 

Riding the strong play of their MVP candidate the Mavericks have played into the postseason as the potential 4th seed in a very talented Western Conference.
