Top 10 College Basketball Rankings – February 2022
Ranking the best NCAA Men’s college basketball teams of February 2022 as the Kentucky Wildcats lead by Oscar Tshiebwe go from unranked to ranked this month. Also where Auburn Tigers, Gonzaga Bulldogs, and more rank
By Sunday Umoh | February 20, 2022
The halfway point of February 2022 has approached as NCAA Basketball Men’s teams get prepared and focused on the late push to secure top spots within their conference while polishing up their March Madness resume. Luckily for a bulk of the Top 10 NCAA BB Men’s teams, their resume has been written and nearly secured for a spot in postseason play.
As the Gonzaga Bulldogs made strides to take over the top spot heading into Valentine’s Day and the second full week of the month, one other team making a big push after struggling to start the season the Kentucky Wildcats have found ways to move inside of the Top 10 while landing at number five. Meanwhile, Wisconsin moves on to the list while the Auburn Tigers continue to win while moving to number two.
With that said, here is our list of the Top 10 NCAA Basketball Men’s Teams:
Honorable Mention
Villanova Wildcats
The Villanova Wildcats have been as solid as any team across the country this season winning 20 of their first 26 contests this season. After losing a difficult 83-73 matchup to the 24th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles, the Wildcats have been hot winning four straight games including wins over the 17th ranked UConn Huskies and the 8th ranked Providence Friars.
As you examine the Wildcats, the team has a deep bench with six different players averaging at least 9.2 points a game while each averaging at least 25 minutes per game. Rounding out the regular season, the Wildcats have rematches against both UConn and Providence.
Wisconsin Badgers
One of the most polished teams in Men’s College Basketball, the Wisconsin Badgers have the depth and talent to make a deep run inside the Big Ten as well as during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. While the Badgers come in just outside of the top 10, disappointing losses against Illinois and Rutgers offset the teams key wins against the 17th ranked Michigan State Spartans and Indiana Hoosiers. The Badgers are led by one of the top men’s basketball players in the country Johnny Davis who is averaging 20.7 points a game.
Top 10 Men’s Basketball Rankings
10. USC Trojans
Out west in the Pac-12 conference the USC Trojans are currently ranked #3 after winning seven of their past 10 contests. This includes a difficult stretch over the past three games with games against a 7th ranked Arizona Wildcats team and the 12th ranked UCLA Bruins.
The Trojans fell to the Wildcats while rebounding with wins against both Pacific and the Bruins. Over the next few weeks, the Trojans will have a chance to move up the rankings as well as within the Pac-12 with key matchups against Oregon, Arizona and UCLA remaining.
9. Baylor Bears
After starting the 2021-22 NCAA Men’s Basketball schedule winning 15 straight contests and landing as the top ranked team in the country, the Baylor Bears have struggled losing two of their last five games as well as four of their last 10 overall.
Despite the losses, the Bears are loaded with weapons that can allow them to make a run at a second straight National Championship. After losing to 10th ranked Kansas Jayhawks on February 5th, 2022 the Bears were able to rebound with wins over Kansas State and the 20th ranked Texas Longhorns. The Bears have seven different players averaging at least 20 minutes and four different players averaging double digit points per game.
8. Duke Blue Devils
In the final season for Mike Krzyzewski, the Duke Blue Devils have won 22 of their first 26 games this season including three straight games heading into a key rematch against Florida State on February 19th, 2022.
In the team’s four losses this season the team has lost by a combined nine points including two games by one point and one by two points. The Blue Devils are led by Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore Jr while sophomore center Mark Williams has posted four straight double digit performances.
7. Kansas Jayhawks
At the front of the Big 12, the Kansas Jayhawks are one team that no team in the country would like to face down the stretch and into postseason play. While the team has four losses on the year, two of the four losses came against teams ranked within the top 20 teams in the country, a third loss came against a team that is currently ranked.
Since January 24th, 2022 no team in the country has had a schedule of games as difficult as the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks knocked off 13th ranked Texas Tech, 20th ranked Iowa State and 8th ranked Baylor Bears while falling to 12th ranked Kentucky and 20th ranked Texas.
6. Providence
A new face to the Top 10 Men’s BB Teams list this week is the Providence Friars who currently lead the Big East with a 21-3 overall record. Since January 8th, 2022 the Friars have won eight of their last 10 contests with their most recent loss coming against the surging Villanova Wildcats.
This stretch includes key wins against both Xavier Musketeers and the Marquette Golden Eagles. Leading the team’s recent success is Jared Bynum who has scored at least 18 points in four straight games while recording nine steals.
5. Kentucky Wildcats
With the talent John Calipari continues to recruit, many questions were being asked early on as the Kentucky Wildcats struggled to find consistency despite putting wins on the board. Things have been turning in the right direction as the team has won six of their last seven games with their one loss coming against a very talented Tennessee Volunteers team.
On the year, the Wildcats four losses have each come against teams ranked on the Men’s Top 25 Basketball rankings. Oscar Tshiebwe continues to dominate as one of the best big men in the country and one that continues to rack up double doubles.
4. Purdue Boilermakers
The roller coaster ride of a season continues for the Purdue Boilermakers who reach the top overall spot in all of Men’s College Basketball before dropping a key matchup against Rutgers. Since February 2nd, 2022 the Boilermakers have played five times through February 13th, winning four of the five contests including a key 84-68 blowout of an Illinois Fighting Illini team leading the Big Ten conference. The team is led by possible NBA lottery prospect Jaden Ivey who is averaging 17.4 points a game to go along with five rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
3. Arizona Wildcats
Ranking the top three NCAA Men’s Basketball teams is as difficult of a task as any as each team has played like the best team in the country. Unfortunately only one team can land at each spot and for the Arizona Wildcats the third spot is currently their spot. However, the Wildcats are putting together a brilliant 2021-22 season as they currently continue to hold the top spot in the Pac-12 conference.
Since losing their second game of the season back on January 25th, 2022 the Wildcats have won six straight contests including wins against two teams ranked inside of the Top 20. The Wildcats have two players averaging at least 14.9 points a game, three players averaging six rebounds a game and two additional players averaging at least 10 points a game.
2. Auburn Tigers
Much like the Arizona Wildcats and Gonzaga Bulldogs, the Auburn Tigers are taking control of their respective conference as they sit as the top team in the SEC. Since the start of 2022, the Tigers have won key matchups against top ranked teams Kentucky and Alabama while their only loss since November 24th came at the hands of Arkansas on February 8th, 2022. On any given night the Tigers have a tandem of stars that could lead the way as five different players have led the team in scoring over their past 10 contests.
1. Gonzaga Bulldogs
Landing at number one on our Top 10 Men’s Basketball Power Rankings list is the Gonzaga Bulldogs who have yet to lose during 2022 while their last loss came back on December 4th, 2021. In those two losses the Bulldogs lost two key matchups against two top 25 ranked programs. Over the past five games, the Bulldogs have won four of the five contests by at least 30 points and the fifth game by 16 against a 22nd ranked Saint Mary’s Gaels program.
The Bulldogs possibly have the best roster in all of college basketball while having five different players average at least 10 points a game, three players averaging at least five rebounds a game and one of the best players in the country in Drew Timme. With four games left the Bulldogs have a chance to finish the season at 25-2 entering postseason play.
