Honorable Mention
Murray State Racers
Season Record: 30-2
As the attention has grown on many of the top men’s basketball programs around the country, one team that has put together one of the more impressive 2021-22 campaigns are the Murray State Racers who finished the season with a 30-2 overall record and won the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.
The Racers are led by a trio of talented stars including junior forward KJ Williams and junior guard Tevin Brown. The tandem averaged 35.1 points per game to go along with 14.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.2 blocked shots per game. In addition, the talented Justice Hill controlled the floor at point guard while averaging 13.2 points per game to go along with five assists.
Wisconsin Badgers
Season Record: 24-7
Despite failing to miss the Top 10 NCAA Basketball Men’s Teams rankings, the Wisconsin Badgers are as talented as any team in the field of 68 and one team that has the depth to make a deep run within the Men’s Tournament.
The Badgers are one of nine teams from the Big Ten conference to make this tournament showcasing the depth and talent the Badgers had to endure during the regular season as well as the Big Ten tournament. Down the stretch the Badgers won five of their last seven games and seven of ten including key wins over two AP Top 25 ranked teams.
As we have seen over the years, the Badgers have a talented guard in Johnny Davis who can help carry the load. Davis is averaging 19.7 points per game to go along with 8.2 rebounds.
Top 10 Men’s Basketball Rankings
10. Purdue Boilermakers
Season Record: 27-7
After a dominating 2021-22 NCAA Men’s regular season posting a 27-7 record and the Big Ten regular season co-champion, the Purdue Boilermakers are looking to make a deep run into March as one of the potential teams to take home the NCAA championship.
The Boilermakers roster is as deep as any team in the NCAA Tournament, including four different players averaging double digits, and six players averaging at least 19 minutes per game.
Leading the charge is sophomore guard and potential NBA Lottery Draft Pick Jaden Ivey. Ivey averaged 17.4 points per game to go along with 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Led by Ivey, the Boilermakers picked up five wins over AP Top 25 ranked programs.
9. Tennessee Volunteers
Season Record: 26-7
One of the biggest surprises in all college basketball, the Tennessee Volunteers will look to continue their success as the tournament kicks off and the madness of March begins. The Volunteers finished tied for second within the SEC during the regular season before knocking off Texas A&M to take home the SEC tournament.
Despite lacking the big-name star as some of the other teams on the Top 10 NCAA BB Men’s Teams rankings, the Volunteers have a ton of key contributors including both Kennedy Chandler and Santiago Vescovi who are both averaging over 13 points per game.
Meanwhile the team has four additional players averaging at least seven points per game, a total of six players averaging at least 21 minutes per game and four players averaging at least 4.5 rebounds per game.
8. Duke Blue Devils
Season Record: 26-5
The Mike Kryzewski train ride is entering the station as his NCAA coach career is coming to an end after the 2021-22 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Despite failing to take home the ACC Tournament over the weekend, the Duke Blue Devils are loaded with talent and one of the deepest teams Coach K has assembled since arriving at Cameron Indoor Stadium back in 1980.
The Blue Devils who have five potential first round NBA Draft picks, are dangerous on the floor but the pressure put on the players shoulders due to their coach’s final season may be just too much to put together a deep ride. Coach K has five different players averaging at least 10 points a game and a sixth player averaging 8.1 points per game.
7. Kentucky Wildcats
Season Record: 25-6
Another March Madness arrives and another solid Kentucky Wildcats team with the potential to make a deep postseason run. After the team’s slow start, Jim Calipari’s team got it going down the stretch winning 11 of their last 14 games to take home the top record in the SEC regular season and securing a 7th spot on the AP Top 25 heading into selection Sunday.
The Wildcats are led by the dominant forward Oscar Tshiebwe who is averaging 17 points a game while leading the nation averaging 15.1 rebounds per contests.
6. Villanova Wildcats
Season Record: 26-7
The Wildcats are a popular name among the Top 10 NCAA BB Men’s Teams rankings, this time it is the Villanova Wildcats joining the list. This Wildcats team enters the tournament as hot as any team in the country winning five straight games including the Big East Tournament Championship game as well as 13 of their final 16 overall contests.
Leading the Wildcats is the team’s talented guard duo of Collin Gillespie and Justin Moore. The guard tandem averaged 30.9 points per game this season to go along with 8.9 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.1 steals per contest. In addition, Jermaine Samuels and Caleb Daniels each finished the season averaging at least 10 points per game.
5. Auburn Tigers
Season Record: 27-5
One name that everyone must remember entering the tournament is Jabari Smith. Smith, who is the potential top freshman in all of college basketball and potential number one overall pick during the upcoming 2022 NBA Draft, is averaging 17.1 points per game to go along with seven rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.
With Smith dominating, the Tigers were nearly unbeatable during the regular season losing just four times over 31 contests. Despite their loss to Texas A&M during the SEC Tournament, the Tigers are a team to watch during March Madness.
4. Arizona Wildcats
Season Record: 31-3
The last of the Wildcats teams to join the Top 10 NCAA BB Men’s Teams, is the Arizona Wildcats who were at the head of the class in the Pac-12 conference. While some analysts have the Wildcats as the potential top team within the NCAA Men’s Tournament, concerns over their style of play and leadership have them at number four on our rankings list.
As these concerns are there, the Wildcats have shown their ability to dominate including winning six straight games to close out the season and the Pac-12 tournament including three wins in three straight days.
In all the team has four different players averaging at least 10 points per game, four additional players averaging at least 6.9 points per game, seven total players averaging 20 minutes per game and five players averaging at least 4.6 rebounds per game. If the Wildcats can continue to play together as a team, the talent is there to make a deep run.
3. Baylor Bears
Season Record: 26-6
The Baylor Bears are one of the four number one seeds entering the NCAA tournament after posting an overall record of 26-6 on the year. The Bears showcased their talent down the stretch winning seven of their last 10 contests including picking up three wins over AP Top 25 ranked programs.
The trio of guards LJ Cryer, James Akinjo and Adam Flagler combined to average 40.3 points per game along with 6.5 rebounds, 10.5 assists and 4.7 steals per contest. The trio is as deep as any tandem within men’s basketball entering the NCAA tournament.
2. Kansas Jayhawks
Season Record: 28-6
Don’t sleep on the Kansas Jayhawks as the NCAA Tournament gets set to kick off later this week. The Big 12 Champion finished the season winning five straight contests including a key 74-65 win over Texas Tech within the Big 12 Championship game.
In the year, the Jayhawks had ten games against Top 25 ranked programs and eight additional games against teams that appeared at times on the rankings while going 6-4 in those ranked contests. Headlining the talent is senior guard Ochai Agbaji who finished the season ranked 25th in scoring averaging 19.7 points per game while also adding 5.1 rebounds per contests.
1. Gonzaga Bulldogs
Season Record: 26-3
We have been here before and we are here again as the Gonzaga Bulldogs sit at number one as well as the overall top number one seed within the NCAA Tournament. Big question surrounding the Bulldogs is whether or not the team can finally get to the Final Four again and take home the NCAA Championship.
The Bulldogs who finished the season as the number one ranked team on the AP Top 25 rankings list put together a 26-3 record during the year as well as the WCC tournament. The Bulldogs are led by two of the top players in the country, junior Drew Timme and freshman Chet Holmgreen.
Timme averaged 17.5 points per game to go along with 6.3 rebounds while the Bulldogs big man Holmgreen averaged 14.2 points per game to go along with 9.6 rebounds and 3.6 blocked shots per game. The duo is joined by three other players averaging at least 10 points per game.
