Ranking the best women’s college basketball teams after the LSU Tigers defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2022-2023 NCAA National Championship game

The 2022-23 NCAA Women’s Basketball season is all wrapped up after an exciting 2023 NCAA Women’s National Championship Game. A game that saw a record number of viewers while the LSU Tigers landed the National Championship with an impressive win over the Iowa Hawkeyes. 

All in all, the women’s basketball season delivered action from start to finish including the defending National Champions the South Carolina Gamecocks coming one game short of playing for a chance to repeat.

Overall, the Top 10 NCAA Women’s Basketball Teams 2023 rankings list is loaded with talented teams deserving of the top spot.

As you start to look around the landscape of Women’s college basketball it is hard to point to just one or two teams that are talented. Add in the transfer portal to what was already a loaded top 25 rankings and nearly any team in the country can rebuild for a title.

Landing on the Top 10 teams among women’s basketball includes the LSU Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, Iowa Hawkeyes, Maryland Terps, and Virginia Tech Hokies. Here is a look at the Top 10 NCAA Women’s Basketball Teams 2023 rankings list.

Honorable Mention

Stanford Cardinals

Record: 29-6

Previous Ranking: #7

Landing just outside of the Top 10 NCAA Women’s Basketball Teams 2023 rankings list is the Stanford Cardinals. The Cardinals were one of two very talented teams in the Pac-12 during the season while finishing the year with an overall record of 29-6.

Despite a disappointing loss in the 2nd round of the Women’s National Basketball tournament, the Cardinals were as solid as any team all season long while being led by junior forward Cameron Brink and senior guard Haley Jones. In the year the Cardinals put together a 9-3 record against AP Top 25 ranked women’s basketball teams.

Louisville Cardinals

Record: 26-12

Previous Ranking: Unranked

After an up and down regular season that saw the Louisville Cardinals post a 23-11 record, the team found their success down the stretch winning two of their final three games leading into the Women’s National Basketball Tournament.

That success steamrolled the Cardinals to three straight wins including an impressive 72-62 record against the Ole Miss Rebels to reach the Elite 8 before losing to a very talented Iowa Hawkeyes team. Junior guard Hailey Van Lith carried the load for the Cardinals all season long while averaging 19.7 points per game.

10. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Record: 27-6

Previous Ranking: Honorable Mention #1

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 NCAA Women’s Basketball Teams 2023 rankings list is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Irish who finished the regular season with an impressive resume including key wins against the UConn Huskies, Virginia Tech Hokies, and Florida State Seminoles.

As talented as any team in the ACC the Fighting Irish finished with the top record within the conference while eventually falling to the Louisville Cardinals in the ACC Tournament.

The success continued in the NCAA Women’s Championship Tournament including wins over Southern Utah and Mississippi State to move to the Sweet 16 before eventually losing to the Maryland Terps.

9. Utah Utes

Record: 27-5

Previous Ranking: #6

One of the most impressive teams all season long among the women’s basketball landscape was the Utah Utes who were nearly unbeatable during conference play while also showing their potential losing to eventual National Champions the LSU Tigers by just three points within the Sweet 16 round of the March Madness tournament.

Overall, the Utes posted a 4-2 record against AP Top 25 ranked women’s basketball teams while picking up a key win over Stanford (#3) late in the regular season. The Utes were 14-2 down the stretch including their two wins during the NCAA Tournament. 

8. UConn Huskies

Record: 31-6

Previous Ranking: #9

The UConn Huskies continue to find success on the basketball floor as head coach Geno Auriemma continues to build title contenders each season.

Despite the loss of Paige Bueckers for the entire season the Huskies remained as one of the top teams in the country while winning the Big East Championship knocking off a very talented Villanova Wildcats team.

On the year the Huskies posted a 7-3 record against teams ranked among the AP Top 25 rankings list including three straight wins over top teams in their first five games of the season.

The Huskies featured five players who averaged at least 11 points per game this season while seven different players averaged at least 22 minutes per game.

7. Indiana Hoosiers

Record: 28-4

Previous Ranking: #2

Among the top teams in the country all season long the Indiana Hoosiers finished the year with an 28-4 record while taking home the Big Ten regular season championship.

On the year the Hoosiers posted a 9-2 record against AP Top 25 ranked teams including wins against very talented women’s basketball programs that featured the Maryland Terps and Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Hoosiers were led by senior forward Mackenzie Holmes who led the team averaging 22.3 points per game across the season while posting 7.3 rebounds per game.

Despite their regular season success, the Hoosiers came up short losing to the Miami Hurricanes during the second round of the Women’s basketball tournament.

6. Ohio State Buckeyes

Record: 28-8

Previous Ranking: Unranked

The success of any college basketball team revolves around the play of their guard position and that is the same case for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes who were led by five different players averaging at least 10 points per game including Taylor Mikesell who led the team averaging 17.2 points per game.

The Buckeyes wound up coming up just short of the Big Ten Tournament Champions losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes rebounded, winning three straight games to reach the Elite 8 before losing to the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Women’s National Championship tournament.

5. Maryland Terps

Record: 28-7

Previous Ranking: #8

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 NCAA Women’s Basketball Teams 2023 rankings list is the Maryland Terps. The Terps, who have been one of the best teams in the country over the past 10 plus seasons, continued their success during the 2022-23 NCAA Women’s Basketball season. 

Led by head coach Brenda Frese the Terps posted a 7-4 overall record against AP Top 25 ranked teams during the regular season.

Despite losing Angel Reese to the LSU Tigers, the Terps had enough talent this season to reach the Elite 8 eventually losing to a very talented South Carolina Gamecocks team.

4. Virginia Tech Hokies

Record: 31-5

Previous Ranking: #5

One of the most impressive teams during the 2022-23 NCAA Women’s Basketball season was the Virginia Tech Hokies who were as good as any team in the country while ranking among the best teams in the ACC.

The Hokies put together an elite run through the women’s basketball tournament before falling to the eventual National Champions the LSU Tigers.

A run that included talented wins against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Elite 8 and the Tennessee Lady Volunteers in the Sweet 16. On the year the Hokie finished the regular season with an impressive 6-2 record against teams ranked in the AP Top 25.

3. South Carolina Gamecocks

Record: 36-1

Previous Ranking: #1

The South Carolina Gamecocks looked like the team to beat all season while knocking off nearly every team that matched up against them before falling to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Final Four of the Women’s National Basketball tournament.

After winning the National Championship last season the Gamecocks rank off 36 straight wins to start the season before that loss in the Final Four.

Among those 36 wins included wins against some of the most talented teams in the country including two wins against the Stanford Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, UConn Huskies. LSU Tigers, and the Maryland Terps twice.  

2. Iowa Hawkeyes

Record: 31-7

Previous Ranking: #4

When you have the best player in the country in Caitlin Clark, it is easy to see how you rank among the best teams in the country.

Clark led the Hawkeyes on a magical run all season as well as through the March Madness before coming up short against the LSU Tigers for the National Championship.

Despite the loss it is hard to not rank the Hawkeyes among the best teams in the country after knocking off a South Carolina Gamecocks team that had not lost all season long.

During the regular season the Hawkeyes won the Big Ten Tournament, while going 7-4 against AP Top 25 ranked teams during the 2022-23 NCAA Women’s Basketball season.

1. LSU Tigers

Record: 34-2

Previous Ranking: #3

In at number one on the Top 10 NCAA Women’s Basketball Teams 2023 rankings list is the LSU Tigers who put together an impressive run all season long before making a stellar run through the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers who knocked off the Iowa Hawkeyes in the National Tournament were nearly unbeatable all season with their only two losses coming to top ranked teams including the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Led by Angel Reese who transferred in from the Maryland Terps, the Tigers knocked off the Utah Utes, Virginia Tech Hokies, and Hawkeyes during their March Madness run to the title.
