The landscape of women’s college basketball continues to develop as players continue to get stronger, faster, and more dynamic on both ends of the hardwood. As you start to look around at the point guard position the women’s field is loaded with a lengthy list of talented players including Caitlin Clark who is in the running to take home the top award as the best player in women’s college basketball. Clark, who recently became the All-Time leading scorer among women’s basketball lands easily at the top spot on the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Point Guards Rankings list.

The Iowa Hawkeyes senior entered the final few weeks of the 2023-2024 Women’s Basketball regular season leading the country in both scoring (32.8) and assists (8.5) per game.

While her strong individual play is impressive, even more impressive is her ability to find her teammates while helping her Iowa Hawkeyes to an impressive 23-3 record on the year as well as a top five spot among the AP Top 25 Women’s Basketball teams.

Joining Clark among the best point guards in women’s college basketball includes Hannah Hidalgo of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, McKenna Hofschild of the Colorado State Rams, Georgia Amoore of the Virginia Tech Hokies, and Paige Bueckers of the UConn Huskies.

Honorable Mention

Sarah Andrews

School: Baylor Bears

Just missing the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Point Guards Rankings list is the Baylor Bears talented senior point guard Sarah Andrews. The three-year starter for the Bears continues to be an all-around contributor for the team on both ends of the floor while doing a little bit of everything.

On the offensive side of the floor Andrews has averaged 11.2 points per game this college basketball season to go along with 3.9 assists per game.

Meanwhile the Bears point guard has been active both on the glass while averaging 3.9 rebounds as well as defensively slowing down opposing guards while averaging just over a deal per game (1.2).

Te-Hina Paopao

School: South Carolina Gamecocks

The South Carolina Gamecocks Women’s College Basketball team continues to be the team to beat this season after starting the season with twenty-five straight wins.

The Gamecocks who were the National Champions just two seasons ago have visions on another title this season while relying on seniors including Te-Hina Paopao to help lead the way. The Senior point guard Paopao has delivered veteran leadership all season while also averaging 11.8 points per game.

In addition to her scoring, the Gamecocks point guard has averaged 2.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game over her first twenty-four games of the season. With Paopao on the floor the Gamecocks will look to make another bid at an undefeated season.

Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Point Guards

10. Kiki Rice

School: UCLA Bruins 

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Point Guards Rankings list is the UCLA Bruins sophomore point guard Kiki Rice.

Rice who put together a brilliant first season has elevated her game to the next level this season while increasing her all around game across the board.

Through twenty-five games this season Rice has increased her scoring to 12.6 points per game along with her rebounds to 5.5 and assists to 4.6 per game. In addition, Rice alongside JuJu Watkins delivers one of the best all around tandems in Women’s College Basketball.

9. Jaylyn Sherrod

School: Colorado Buffaloes 

The Colorado Buffaloes sports program continues to grow all over the board including with their impressive Women’s College Basketball team that is led by Jaylyn Sherrod.

As the Buffaloes continue to be an up-and-coming program, Sherrod has been brilliant all season while leading the team through her strong ball handling skills and ability to find her open teammates. The senior point guard is currently posting her second straight season averaging at least four assists (4.7) while also adding thirteen points per game and three rebounds per game.

One of her top performances came in the team’s opening upset win over the top ranked LSU Tigers to open the season. In that win Sherrod carried the team scoring nineteen points while adding eight rebounds and six assists.

8. Shyanne Sellers

School: Maryland Terps 

Over the years the Maryland Terps have had an extensive list of talented players including at the point guard position.

One of those talented point guards is the junior point guard from Aurora, Ohio Shyanne Sellers. After taking her game to the next level last season as a sophomore, Sellers has continued her development and growth this season while averaging a career high 15.8 points per game to go along with 6.1 rebounds and 5.4 assists.

Sellers has been the backbone of the Terps all season while not only helping to run the team’s offense but also as a key contributor both in scoring as well as on the defensive end of the floor. 

7. Jacy Sheldon

School: Ohio State Buckeyes 

As you look around at the point guard position it is hard to look past Jacy Sheldon of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Sheldon has been brilliant all season for a Buckeyes team currently leading the Big Ten and ranked second among the AP Women’s Top 25 rankings entering late February 2024.

The Buckeyes senior is currently averaging 17.8 points per game to go along with 3.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Over twenty-five games this season Sheldon has posted eight games with at least twenty points as well as three games with at least thirty points all coming in a four-game stretch in mid-December.

On the opposite end of the floor Sheldon has been just as strong while posting 2.1 steals per game after posting 3.5 steals last season.

6. Katie Dinnebier

School: Drake Bulldogs 

The point guard position is loaded in Women’s College Basketball as Katie Dinnebier of the Drake Bulldogs is another star landing among the best in the game.

The junior point guard from West Des Moines, Idaho currently sits ranked 32nd in the country while scoring nineteen points per game to go along with the fifth most assists per game (6.7) through her first twenty-five games of the season.

Dinnebiers success has come from her improved shooting, including shooting 53.3 percent from the field while shooting 40.2 percent from behind the three-point line.

Meanwhile the Bulldogs point guard also has been solid on the glass averaging 3.4 rebounds and a menace on the defensive end of the floor for opposing guards including posting 2.5 steals per game. 

5. Georgia Amoore

School: Virginia Tech Hokies 

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Point Guards Rankings list is the Virginia Tech Hokies senior point guard Georgia Amoore.

Amoore who has spent her entire four-year career with the Hokies has put together her best season of her career while averaging career highs in scoring while averaging 17.8 points per game as well as assists while posting 7.5 per game.

The Hokies senior is as unselfish as any point guard in the country while looking to set up her teammates first before opening her own shot. 

4. Paige Bueckers

School: UConn Huskies 

After battling injuries over the start of her Women’s Basketball career, Paige Bueckers has returned healthy to the UConn Huskies this season. With a National Championship set as the main goal, it is easy to see why the Huskies continue to rank among the best women’s basketball teams in the country with Bueckers on the hardwood.

With just a few games remaining during the regular season Bueckers has been dominant all over the floor while shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 43.2 percent from behind the three-point line helping to average 20.1 points per game.

Meanwhile Bueckers has been terrific on the defensive end of the floor as well posting 1.1 blocked shots and 2.2 steals per game. With Bueckers on the floor the Huskies are as talented as any team in the country.

3. McKenna Hofschild

School: Colorado State Rams 

While the Colorado State Rams might not get the recognition as other top Women’s College Basketball programs, it is hard to look past McKenna Hofschild as one of the top players in all of Women’s College Basketball.

Despite standing at just five foot two inches, the Rams point guard is unguardable both as a scorer as well as a ball handler. Through twenty-five games on the season the Prior Lake, Minnesota native is averaging twenty-three points per game to go along with 7.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds.

On the year Hofschild has also been a terrific all-around defender while also posting 1.6 steals per game.

2. Hannah Hidalgo

School: Notre Dame Fighting Irish 

When you are looking for the future of Women’s College Basketball, do not look far past the talented Notre Dame Fighting Irish point guard Hannah Hidalgo.

Hidalgo who is from Haddonfield, New Jersey is putting together a brilliant first season with the Fighting Irish while ranking third among all women’s basketball players this season while averaging 24.4 points per game over her first twenty-five games of the season.

The Fighting Irish freshman is shooting 31.9 percent from behind the three-point line while also shooting 48 percent from the field. Even more impressive has been Hidalgo’s unselfish style of play helping her to average 5.3 assists per game while posting fourteen games with at least five assists. 

1. Caitlin Clark

School: Iowa Hawkeyes

In at number one on the Top 10 Women’s College Basketball Point Guards Rankings list is the Iowa Hawkeyes senior Caitlin Clark who is expected to be the top overall draft pick during the 2024 WNBA Draft.

Clark, who recently slid into the All-Time leading scorer among women’s basketball, is putting together her best season of her four-year career with the Hawkeyes. Through her first twenty-six games of the season, Clark is averaging a career high 32.8 points per game while shooting 47.5 from the field and 39.9 percent from behind the three-point line.

In addition, Clark is averaging 6.9 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 1.7 steals per game while potentially leading the Hawkeyes to a number one seed during the Women’s National Basketball Championship.
