Ranking the best punters in College Football for the 2023 NCAA season as Tory Taylor of the Iowa Hawkeyes leads the way

The landscape and strategy of football is built around a wide range of components to include both offense and defense as well as special teams. While special teams are often looked past when it comes to the game, in theory however special teams plays a huge role in the outcome of any football game. Entering the 2023 NCAA Football season Taylor was selected a pre-season All-American team selection as well as on multiple awards watch lists to include the Ray Guy Award and Walter Camp Award.

School: Boise State Broncos

Just missing the Top 10 NCAAF Punters 2023 Rankings list is the Boise State Broncos sophomore punter James Ferguson-Reynolds. Reynolds, who is from Australia, continues to develop into one of the best punters in college football after posting a strong freshman season last year.

The Broncos punter is currently averaging 49.5 yards per punt this season while posting a career long 71 yard punt this season. In addition, the Australian native is ranked ninth in college football among punters with at least 20 punts while posting a net average of 42.5 yards per punt.

Eddie Czaplicki

School: USC Trojans

After spending his first two seasons with the Arizona State Sun Devils, Eddie Czaplicki made the transfer to the USC Trojans while remaining within the Pac 12 conference.

The Charlotte, North Carolina native continues to build a strong resume as one of college football’s best punters. After logging 95 punts over his freshman and sophomore years, Czaplicki has posted 27 to start the season for a very solid Trojans team.

Over that stretch, the Trojans punter has posted a 45.3 yard per punt average while averaging a net average of 42 yards per punt.

10. Oliver Straw

School: West Virginia Mountaineers

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 Best Punters in College Football 2023 Rankings is the West Virginia Mountaineers punter Oliver Straw. Straw, like many of the top kickers in college football, is making a name for himself during his second season as the punter for the Mountaineers.

After averaging 41.3 net average yards per punt and 42.5 average yards per punt last season has improved his all around punting performance this season despite seeing his punt total decrease to start the season.

The Mountaineers punter is currently averaging 43.3 yards per punt with a 4.27 net average punt average over 26 total punts to start the season. In addition, Straw has pinned 12 of his 26 punts this season inside the 20 yard line.

9. Jack Browning

School: San Diego State Aztecs

One of the top all around kickers in all of college football is the San Diego Aztecs kicker and punter Jack Browning. Browning who was named to multiple preseason watch lists including for the Lou Groza Award as well as a pre-season All-American candidate is putting together a strong 2023-2024 NCAA Football season.

The Aztecs punter has posted a career long 66 punt over the start of the season while averaging 44.9 yards per punts over his first 39 punts of the season. To go along with those numbers Browning currently ranks 11th in the country in net average yards while posting a 42.4 mark to start the season.

8. Max Fletcher

School: Arkansas Razorbacks

Another top tier college punter landing among the best punters in college football is Arkansas Razorbacks sophomore punter Max Fletcher. Fletcher who is from Melbourne Australia finished off a strong freshman season pinning 14 of his total 38 points inside the 20 yard line while helping Fletcher to land among the Ray Guy Award watch list.

After averaging 37.5 yards per punt average and a 33.5 net average yard per punt last season, Fletcher has increased his average yards per punt by nearly 11 yards per punt (48.8). In addition, Fletcher is averaging 42.3 net yards per average while ranking within the top 15 among punters with more than 20 punts this season.

7. Jeremy Crawshaw

School: Florida Gators

Coming off averaging 47 yards per punt last season the Florida Gators punter continues to have success as one of the best punters in the country.

Through the teams first seven games of the season the junior kicker Jeremy Crawshaw currently ranks 9th in the country in average yards per punt while also ranking 6th in the country while averaging a net average of 43.2 yards per over his first 20 punts of the season.

Despite posting a limited number of punts on the season, Crawshaw has earned potential consideration for multiple season awards including the Ray Guy award.

6. James Burnip

School: Alabama Crimson Tide

Over the years the Alabama Crimson Tide has had a track record of landing top tier talent across their entire roster and that is the case at the punter position with James Burnip. On the season the Crimson Tide punter has been strong while averaging 48.2 yards per punt over his first 36 punts of the season.

As the junior continues to develop into a top tier punter, his production has increased over each of his previous two seasons. In addition Burnip is averaging a career high 42.5 net average per punt to start the season while pinning 13 of 36 punts inside the 20 yard line.

5. Alex Mastromanno

School: Florida State Seminoles

Rounding out the Top 5 on the Top 10 NCAAF Punters 2023 Rankings list is the Florida State Seminoles punter Alex Mastromanno. Mastromanno has been a key part of the Seminoles success this season on the special teams side of the football.

After averaging a career high of 41 yards as a freshman, the Seminoles senior punter is posting a career high 44.3 net average yards per punt over his first 24 punts of the season while ranking 4th among punters in the country with at least 20 punts. In addition Mastromanno is averaging a career high 47.3 average yard per punt this season.

4. Austin McNamara

School: Texas Tech Red Raiders

Looking around at the best punters in the country and a contender for the Ray Guy Award, Austin McNamara of the Texas Tech Red Raiders lands among those punters.

McNamara who is in his senior year with the Red Raiders is posting a career high 48.2 yards per punt this season while also averaging 43.6 net average punt yards per punt over 31 punts to start the season.

In addition McNamara has posted 12 punts inside the 20 on the season while also posting a 38.71 inside the 20 percentage on all punts this season.

3. Porter Wilson

School: Duke Blue Devils

Another senior punter rounding out his NCAA football career is the Duke Blue Devils punter Porter Wilson. Wilson, who has averaged at least 42.9 yards per punt in each of his four seasons has continued that success this season while averaging a career high 48.2 yards per punt.

Through the start of the 2023-2024 NCAA Football season, Wilson currently ranks 8th in the country in average yards per punt while also ranking fourth among punters with at least 20 punts with a 45.3 net average yards per punt mark to start the season.

Despite posting only 24 total punts, the Blue Devils punter has pinned nine points inside the 20 yard line while helping the Blue Devils to win the field position battle this season.

2. Matthew Hayball

School: Vanderbilt Commodores

When it comes to one of the biggest feet in college football among all the punters the Vanderbilt Commodores Matthew Hayball currently ranks second in the country while averaging 49.1 yards per punt on his first 32 punts of the season.

Hayballs strong start to the season has him in the running for the Ray Guy Award while also making a run at an All-American selection at the punter position. The Commodores senior punter landed a punt of at least 70 yards for the third time over his five college football seasons.

In addition, Hayball has landed 12 of his 32 punts inside of the 20 while also leading the country tied with Tory Taylor with a 46 net average yard per punt mark this season.

1. Tory Taylor

School: Iowa Hawkeyes

In at number one on the Top 10 NCAAF Punters 2023 Rankings is the Iowa Hawkeyes punter Tory Taylor. Taylor who is tied along with Matthew Hayball for the high net average punt yards per punt this season while averaging 46 yards per punt.

Even more impressive has been Taylors ability to pin his opponents inside the 20 to start the season. The Hawkeyes punter has posted 22 of his 55 punts inside the 20 while posting a 40 percent inside the 20 yard line percentage.

In addition, Taylor is averaging 48.7 yards per punt while setting career highs in nearly every punting statistic this season. A strong finish to the season and Taylor will have a shot at taking home some honors at the end of the season while moving himself up the list of punters entering the 2024 NFL Draft.
