Ranking the best Offensive Tackles in College Football for the 2023 NCAA season as Joe Alt of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish leads the way

The success of any football team revolves around the level of quality play on the offensive and defensive line. On the offensive side of the football that includes the play of each lineman including both guards, the center, and even more importantly at the left/right tackle positions. As you start to look around at the best offensive tackles in college football, each of the top tackles played at an elevated level this season while contributing to their respective teams success moving the football. Headlining the list of the Top 10 Best Offensive Tackles in College Football 2023 Rankings is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish junior offensive tackle Joe Alt.

Alt, who is expected to repeat as a First-Team All-American at the tackle position put together his best season of his career while elevating his draft status. The Fighting Irish left tackle finished the season as the highest grade tackle in college football according to PFF ratings.

In addition, the Fighting Irish finished the season averaging 429.3 yards of offense and the 8th most points per game (39.1) in the nation. Other top offensive tackles joining Olt among the best offensive tackles in college football include Javon Foster of the Missouri Tigers, JC Latham of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Taliese Fuaga of the Oregon State Beavers, and Alu Fashanu of the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Darius Washington

School: Florida State Seminoles

Just missing the Top 10 Best Offensive Tackles in College Football 2023 Rankings list is the Florida State Seminoles. Despite being left out of the College Football Playoffs it is hard to look past the success the Seminoles offense had all season while riding to a 13-0 record during the regular season and in the ACC Championship game.

The red shirt junior put together his best season of his college career while helping to protect Jordan Travis for most of the season while allowing the Seminoles to average 37 points per game and 416.3 yards per game.

Washington’s strong physical style of play and aggressive attack up front in both passing and running situations landed him as a First-Team All ACC selection this season.

LaDarius Henderson

School: Michigan Wolverines

Finishing the season as one of the four undefeated teams as well as the Big Ten Champions it is hard to look past the entire Michigan Wolverines offensive lines including the team’s offensive tackles to land among the best in football.

One of those player sis LaDarius Henderson who slots in at 6 foot 4 inches and 315 pounds. Henderson is a strong offensive tackle that can perform at an elevated level both in pass blocking situations as well as running blocking situations.

After spending the past few seasons with the Arizona State Sun Devils, Henderson transferred to the Wolverines while helping guide them to the top overall ranking and a spot within the College Football Playoffs.

Henderson’s play on the field earned him an All-Big Ten selection as well as earning two Offensive Player of the Week honors for his play at the left tackle position.

10. Kelvin Banks Jr.

School: Texas Longhorns

Coming in at number 10 on the Top 10 Best Offensive Tackles in College Football 2023 Rankings is the Texas Longhorns Kelvin Banks Jr. Banks Jr and the Longhorns put together a strong season that included knocking off the talented Alabama Crimson Tide in route to averaging 475.9 yards per game and 36.2 points per game.

The talented sophomore who is coming off a strong freshman season earning himself a spot among the Second-Team All-Big 12 team. The Texas native who stands at 6 foot 4 inches and 324 pounds is a natural athlete with raw size and power while using his size to protect the left side of the offensive line.

His strong play on the offensive line while helping the Longhorns to the Big 12 Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoffs landed him a First-Team All-Big 12 selection this season.

9. Graham Barton

School: Duke Blue Devils

The level of play of the ACC is not as high as we have seen in years past however the top players at nearly each position rank among the best in the country. This includes Graham Barton of the Duke Blue Devils who was recently selected as a First-Team All ACC selection.

Barton who has spent time at both the center position and at left tackle is built around a strong center of gravity while using his awareness and understanding of the football game to slow down opposing defenders looking to get to the quarterback.

Barton showcased strong play both in pass blocking situations as well as in rock blocking schemes while using his strength to get into the second level. All and all Barton projects to be one of the top college football tackles drafted during the 2024 NFL Draft.

8. Amarius Mims

School: Georgia Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs were just four points away from posting their second straight undefeated season and earning third straight berth to the College Football Playoffs.

This type of success requires talented players something the Bulldogs continue to recruit and produce with Amarius Mims ranking among the best offensive tackles in college football.

The Bulldogs right tackle had ideal size at 6 foot 7 inches and 340 pounds to be a strong tackle at the next level while also ranking among the best in all of college football during the 2023-2024 NCAA Football season.

Mims and the Bulldogs offensive line helped produce one of college football’s top ranked offenses thank finished ranked 8th in total yards per game (482.9) and 9th in points scored per game (38.4). 

7. Josh Fryar

School: Ohio State Buckeyes

It is hard to look past how great of a team the Ohio State Buckeyes were this season while coming up just short of earning a spot into the College Football Playoffs.

One of those talented players anchoring down the Buckeyes talented offensive line is Josh Fryar who anchored down the tackle position all season long.

Fryar who sits at 6 foot 6 inches and 313 pounds is a big strong physical tackle who is as efficient in both pass blocking and run blocking schemes while showcasing his ability to open up running lanes for running back to get to the outside.

The Buckeyes finished the season averaging 425 yards per game to go along with 32.8 points scored per game.

6. Ajani Cornelius

School: Oregon Ducks

When it comes to successful offensive lines the Oregon Ducks rank atop the list while being just as good as any other unit in the country. A Ducks offensive line that is currently one of four finalist’s nominated to take home the Joe Moore Award handed out to the best offensive line in college football.

One of those key members of the offensive line is Ajani Cornelius who transferred into the team after spending his first two season with the Rhode Island Rams. A move that paid off for both the Ducks as well as Cornelius.

Cornelius showcased his potential as a top tier offensive tackle while being more effective in rushing situations. The Ducks offense finished 2nd in the country in yards per game (527.4), points scored per game (44.2) and passing yards per game (342.8).

5. Javon Foster

School: Missouri Tigers

Rounding out the Top 5 offensive tackles landing on the Top 10 Best Offensive Tackles in College Football 2023 Rankings list is the Missouri Tigers Javon Foster. As the Tigers put together one of their better seasons in years past finishing ranked 9th among the College Football Playoff rankings.

Foster who skipped entering the 2023 NFL Draft returned to post another strong season while elevating his overall draft status. Foster who anchors the left tackle position who stands in at 6 foot 5 inches and 315 pounds.

The Tigers tackle showcased all season long his athleticism as well as his football awareness while helping the Tigers finish the season averaging 442.9 yards per game and 34.1 points per game. In addition, Foster was selected as a First-Team All SEC selection.

4. JC Latham

School: Alabama Crimson Tide

Year in and year out the Alabama Crimson Tide recruit and develop top tier football players on both sides of the football. One of those players this season is JC Latham who ranks among the best offensive tackles in college football is also expected to be one of the top offensive tackles drafted during the 2024 NFL Draft.

Latham who lists at 6 foot 6 inches and 360 pounds is a big physical tackle who ranked as one of the best passing blockers at the right tackle positions in each of the past two seasons.

With Latham anchoring down the right side of the Crimson Tide offense the team rolled to an impressive 12-1 season while also winning the SEC Championship. His play on the line landed him as a First-Team All SEC selection.

3. Taliese Fuaga

School: Oregon State Beavers 

Another talented offensive tackle making a push to rank among the best in college football is the Oregon State Beavers Taliese Fuaga. Fuaga who is a potential first round pick during the 2024 NFL Draft put together a big season on the line while being selected as a First-team All-Pac 12 selection this season.

The Beavers offensive tackle who stands in at 6 foot 6 inches and 334 pounds finished the season ranked among the best run blocking tackles in the league while anchoring down the right side of the Beavers offensive line.

Throughout the course of the season Fuaga showcased his power and size while being physical and aggressive at the point of contact. 

2. Alu Fashanu

School: Penn State Nittany Lions

When it comes to offensive tackles it is hard to look past the Penn State Nittany Lions Alu Fashanu. Fashanu who played a vital role on the Nittany Lions offensive line helped the team produce 391 yards per game to go along with 37.2 points per game.

The Nittany Lions tackle is coming off another strong season landing him the Rimington-Pace Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year Award as well as being selected to the All-Big Ten team.

The 6 foot 6, 319 pound offensive tackle has all the physical tools including size and power while also having great natural athleticism that allows him to be effective both in pass blocking and running blocking situations.

1. Joe Alt

School: Notre Dame Fighting Irish 

In at number one on the Top 10 Best Offensive Tackles in College Football 2023 Rankings list is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish left tackle Joe Alt. Alt who ranked as the top overall offensive tackle graded out a 91 overall while carrying a 92.2 pass-blocking grade.

As Alt repeats as an All-American, the Fighting Irish tackle is as talented as any tackle in the nation while landing him among the finalists for the 2023 Outland Trophy Award.

Alt who stands in at 6 foot 8 inches and 315 pounds showcases extreme athleticism as a tackle while having immense size and power to protect the blindside and limit players a direct path to the quarterback.
