Top 10 Best NHL Goalies 2024 Rankings
Ranking the Top 10 Best NHL Goalies such as Connor Hellebuyck, Thatcher Demko, Sergei Bobrovsky and more for 2023-2024 NHL season
By admin | April 26, 2024
National Hockey League goaltending is entirely unpredictable. One season’s rising star could be the next major disappointment. So, as we close out the NHL 2023-24 regular season, we take a look at the year’s best performers on the net in the Top 10 Best NHL Goalies 2024 Rankings.
Honorable Mention
Connor Ingram
Team: Arizona Coyotes
Before the start of the season, Connor Ingram had just 30 NHL appearances. Now, he is the number one goaltender for the Arizona Coyotes and a large reason why they’ve had any success at all this year.
Connor Ingram is a name no one would expect to be anywhere near this list. But with his .907 save percentage and 8.0 goals saved above average, he deserves to be at least mentioned as one of the top goalies of the season.
Top 10 Best NHL Goalies 2024 Rankings
10. Jordan Binnington
Team: St. Louis Blues
Jordan Binnington almost single-handedly sneaked the St Louis Blues into the playoffs. A place where they have no business being.
With a save percentage of .913, a goals-against average of 2.84, and 12.1 goals saved above expected, Binnington is a top goalie in the league, and he’s doing it behind a really poor St Louis team.
Binnington is one of the few goaltenders on this list who would rank much higher if they had the luxury of playing on a better team.
9. Igor Shesterkin
Team: New York Rangers
Igor Shesterkin has had his fair share of struggles this season and started the year badly. However, since the All-Star break, he has been back to better form.
He has a great 12.2 goals saved above expected which ranks amongst the top in the league. He also has a .912 save percentage. But Shesterkin has greatly benefited from playing behind one of the best teams in the NHL.
Some will think Igor deserves to be higher on this list, and some will think he doesn’t deserve to be on it.
8. Charlie Lindgren
Team: Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals have absolutely no business being that close to a playoff spot with how poor they have looked all season. But Charlie Lindgren in the net has been pivotal to the Caps being where they are.
Lindgren ranks tenth in goalies for goals saved above expected with 9.0. He also has a .911 save percentage and a 2.67 goals-against average. Lindgren has also posted a very impressive 6 shutouts this season, a joint lead in the NHL.
This has turned into Lindgren’s first year as a definitive number-one option as a netminder. And with how he’s played, he should be a top option going forward.
7. Jacob Markstrom
Team: Calgary Flames
After a bad 2022-23 season, Jacob Markstrom has shown this season that he is still a top goalie in the NHL.
Markstrom has a .905 save percentage and a 2.78 goals-against average. Which by themselves, shouldn’t be good enough to make this list. But when you actually watch Jacob Markstrom, you see he is more than worthy of being in the top 10 this year.
Nothing highlights this more than his 14.0 goals saved above expected, which ranks sixth amongst all goalies (who have played in over 40 games).
Jacob Markstrom has played behind a weak Calgary Flames team all year. If he had a better team in front of him, Markstrom would be in the Vezina Trophy conversation.
6. Cam Talbot
Team: Los Angeles Kings
The LA Kings have one of the steals of the 2023 off-season. After bouncing around a few teams over the past few seasons, Cam Talbot had a rough year with the Senators last season, almost forcing the veteran to take a one-year $1 million “prove it” deal with the Kings. And it’s safe to say he certainly has.
With 12.7 goals saved above expected, 2.50 goals against average, and a .913 save percentage through 53 games, the 36-year-old has had a mini-career resurgence.
Cam Talbot has proved to many other teams who looked elsewhere to address their goalie needs, that overlooking him was a mistake.
5. Linus Ullmark
Team: Boston Bruins
Ranking the Boston Bruins goaltending duo is like splitting hairs. Both have had fantastic seasons with very similar numbers. Linus Ullmark lands the number-five spot as he has only played 39 games as opposed to his counterpart, Jeremy Swayman’s 44 games.
The Bruins elite duo have had the benefit of splitting time in the net almost down the middle. But that should never be used against them because when they are in the net, they both are top 10 goalies.
4. Jeremy Swayman
Team: Boston Bruins
The other side of the Bruins goalie duo is 25-year-old Jeremy Swayman.
Swayman has played slightly more games in the net than Ullmark, starting 44 games to Ullmark’s 39. In those 44 games, Swayman has 18.4 goals saved above expected, a goals-against average of 2.53, and a .916 save percentage.
The Bruins have the best goaltending duo in the NHL. But both Ullmark and Swayman have stood out individually, not just as a unit. Both have had fantastic seasons and the future looks bright for both 25-year-olds.
3. Sergei Bobrovsky
Team: Florida Panthers
At 35 years of age and in his 14th year in the league, Sergei Bobrovsky remains one of the best goalies in the NHL and is having a great season.
Of goalies that have played in over 50 games this year, Bobrovsky leads the pack with a 2.37 goals-against average. He also has an impressive .916 save percentage and co-leads the NHL in shutouts with 6.
The NHL is once again captivated by the two-time Vezina trophy winner. Given how well the Florida Panthers have looked this year, we may see another legendary run from ‘playoff Bob’ this summer.
2. Thatcher Demko
Team: Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks have had a fantastic season; a large part of it is down to the superb efforts of their goaltender Thatcher Demko. One of the best Goalies in NHL today.
The Canucks netminder has a career-best 2.45 goals against average, and is only second in the NHL, behind our number one pick, in goals saved above expected at 20.4.
Some of Demko’s stats may not look like he belongs second on this list, but it’s the 20.4 goals saved above average that truly shows how well Thatcher Demko has played this year.
1. Connor Hellebuyck
Team: Winnipeg Jets
As you have seen by the Top 10 NHL Goalies 2024 Rankings list, many of the NHL’s elite goalies have been struggling this season, however, Connor Hellebuyck has been playing at the top of his game.
Not long ago, Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets looked to be parting ways. But last October he signed a seven-year extension, which the Jets must be thrilled about now.
His .921 save percentage leads the entire league and his 2.39 goals-against average is second in the NHL (with goaltenders who have played over 50 games). He’s pitched 5 shutouts this year and registered over 1600 saves in a season where he looks destined to win his second Vezina Trophy.
We have Connor Hellebuyck winning the Vezina Trophy for the best Goalie in NHL Award of the 2023-2024 season. Where do you rank him in the NHL Goalie Rankings? Rank below to be added in the NHL Power Rankings.
