The quest for the Calder Trophy, the rookie of the year, was quite an exciting one. Not hard for that to happen when you have players like Trevor Zegras playing in the show!

The Red Wings rookies took a slide at the end allowing the other top five players to slip around them. Here are the top ten NHL rookies for the 2021-2022 season.

Honorable Mention

Alex Newhook

Team: Colorado Avalanche

If it wasn’t for some rough play at the beginning of the regular season, Newhook would have been in the top five of rookies this season. He is just on the outside looking in on the top ten rookies on the season.

He played 71 games for the Avalanche this season, scoring 13 goals and 20 assists. He and the Avalanche have the opportunity to go to the Western Conference Final this week, hopefully they can do it!

Top 10 NHL Rookies

10. Matt Boldy

Team: Minnesota Wild

Matt Boldy had an amazing season for the Minnesota Wild. Matt Boldy is a Mass guy through and through, playing for Boston College before joining the Iowa Wild. The former World Junior Gold winner scored 15 goals and 24 assists this season for 39 points. He only scored one goal in six games for the Wild this postseason, but he will surely be a player to watch on the Wild for years to come.

9. Seth Jarvis

Team: Carolina Hurricanes

One of my favorite Western Hockey League teams is the Portland Winterhawks, and they produced an absolute stud in Seth Jarvis. The Winnipeg native scored 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points in 68 games this season.

He and the Hurricanes are still very much in the playoffs, as they are tied with the Rangers 2-2. He has six points in 11 games in this year’s playoffs.

8. Tanner Jeannot

Team: Nashville Predators

It is still so very surprising to me that the Oxbow Ox wasn’t drafted in any of his eligible seasons. He is really looking like found money for the Predators, who have not drafted out of this world the last few seasons.

This year, he had 24 goals and 17 assists for 41 points in 82 games. He only had one point in a four-game sweep at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche.

7. Dawson Mercer

Team: New Jersey Devils

Dawson Mercer was probably one of the best defensive forwards to ever come out of the QMJHL.

So much so he was awarded the Guy Carbonneau Trophy in 2021. The AHL was not needed for Mercer to develop, as he jumped right into the NHL with the Devils this season.

He scored 17 goals and 25 assists for 42 points in all 82 games this season. The Devils did not make the playoffs, so sadly Mercer got to hit the golf course early.

6. Cole Caulfield

Team: Montreal Canadiens

Cole Caufield is in the early running for being one of the best hockey players to come out of Wisconsin and was so close to winning the Stanley Cup last season. This season he picked up where he left off after a rough start and a demotion.

In 67 games this season, he had 23 goals and 20 assists for 43 points in 67 games. Despite making the Cup, the Canadians finished dead last in the NHL this season.

5. Anton Lundell

Team: Florida Panthers

Anton Lundell did everything that was asked of him this season and sadly the Panthers had one of the most disappointing playoff exits this season as they were swept by the cross-state rival in Tampa Bay.

The worst part is that it is probably too late for him to join the Finnish team at the Worlds this year. In 65 games this season he had 18 points and 26 assists for 44 points. He also only had one point in nine games this postseason.

4. Moritz Seider

Team: Detroit Red Wings

Seider is one of the great German players that have been slowly creeping into the NHL this season. He is also currently representing Germany at the IIHF World Championships.

Playing on the first pair for the Red Wings most of the season, he had 7 goals and 43 assists for 52 points in an iron man 82 games this season. The best years for him are still to come.

3. Lucas Raymond

Team: Detroit Red Wings

Along with Seider, we are seeing history in motion as Raymond solidified himself as a real player for the Red Wings now, and in the future this season.

Currently representing Sweden in the IIHF World Championships, he had a great rookie year for the Red Wings.

He played in all 82 NHL games for the Red Wings this season scoring 23 goals and 34 assists this season for 57 points. The Red Wings have the making for an all-time scoring line.

2. Michael Bunting

Team: Toronto Maple Leafs

Michael Bunting was the shining light in a disappointing postseason for the Leafs this season. Sadly, they lost in Game 7 versus the Lightning, continuing their streak of losing in the first round.

He did play almost every game for the Leafs this season, putting up 63 points in 79 games. Those 63 points came from 23 goals and 40 assists, playing in a top six role for most of the season.

1. Trevor Zegras

Team: Anaheim Ducks

Trevor Zegras is the most exciting American born player to play in the NHL since Mike Modano, I know what I just said. You literally never know what he is going to do or try to do.

During this season, Zegras only missed seven games. In 75 games played, he had 23 goals and 38 assists for 38 points in his rookie season. Truly a Calder trophy worthy performance by the rookie this season.
